Comics Official NEW MUTANTS Discussion Thread

Dani's hair looks ready to have sex or connect to a horse or somethin' lol, jk she looks hot....

And I heard they're all getting new costumes after this, IIRC....
id hope not ( i love this look) but whatever. if they do maybe the X-Men can recycle these for all the future newcomers and students.

The New Mutants do need new costumes. They are too old for the team uniform look an it was a step backwards giving them one

Artist Leonard Kirk joins New Mutants in July, coming off his work on Dark X-Men to draw the team of young X-graduates with writer Zeb Wells.

Kirk, who became a Marvel exclusive artist in 2006 after working several years at DC, established himself at the publisher by working with Jeff Parker to reinvent the Agents of Atlas in that team's original mini-series. More recently, Kirk has won Marvel fans for his work with writer Paul Cornell on both Dark X-Men and Captain Britain and MI: 13.

Now the artist joins the New Mutants creative team just as the whole X-universe comes off the "Second Coming" event. Newsarama talked to Kirk about the announcement of his new gig and what this means for readers of New Mutants.

: Leonard, we've seen a wide variety of work over the years from your pencil, from darker characters like Batman to the upbeat Agents of Atlas. What's appealing to you as an artist about the New Mutants project?

Leonard Kirk: The appealing thing about this project for me is that I will be drawing most of the characters I enjoyed in the original graphic novel by Claremont and McLeod in the 1980’s. Also, while it is not strictly an X-Men book, it still falls within that X-family of titles I enjoyed so much as a kid. The project is as nostalgic as it is original.

Nrama: Were you familiar with the current New Mutants comic before you got the gig?

Kirk: I mentioned the graphic novel and, of course, I loved the series that came out of it. Sadly, I don’t have nearly as much time to read comics as I used to so I wasn’t familiar with the current series until I was asked to come on board. I immediately ran out to buy as many issues as I could and became a fan. The series not only had many of the same characters but also much of the same characterization I remember from the New Mutants comics I read as a kid. It also turned out to be darn fun.

Nrama: What do you hope to bring to the series?

Kirk: I’m hoping to bring to this series what I try to bring to every series I draw, clear storytelling. As much as I enjoy the big action panels and the splash pages, I get the most pleasure from my work when I know the readers can get the gist of the story from the pictures alone, without any of the dialog.

Nrama: How has it been preparing for this series with Zeb Wells? Do you think your art will fit what he has in mind for the book?

Kirk: Well, heck, I hope so. I’m about halfway through drawing my first issue and we seem to be working just fine together. We’re comfortable enough to bounce ideas and suggestions off of one another. As I said, I began reading the current series as soon as it was offered to me. That was pretty much the bulk of my preparation for working with Zeb. Well, that and the private detective I hired to follow him around to make sure that Zeb met my hygienic standards. For the most part, he passed, aside from that disgusting thing that he does with old peanut butter and flatworms. Gross!!

Nrama: Can you name a few of the characters you'll be drawing and explain what your approach will be for each character?

Kirk: I'll be drawing the regular line up: Cannonball, Mirage, Karma, Magma, Sunspot, Magik, Cypher and Warlock. I didn’t really want to do too much to change any of them. However, I did do a little bit of tweaking on a couple of the characters. I decided that Cannonball really needed to lose a bit of muscle and a lot of hair. I know that people change over time but I wanted to bring back some of the familiar looks of the characters from the earlier series. I also took a stab at making Magma look more “magma-ish.”

The real fun will come from drawing the bad guys in this story arc. Some of them have already appeared in a previous issue of New Mutants and will be familiar to the readers, but others will be brand new. I can’t really say anything about them without revealing too much of the story.

Nrama: Is there anything you can tell us about the story, without revealing those villains?

Kirk: I don’t know how much I can say right now. I have no idea what will be revealed by Marvel in the announcement this month. There are actually two sets of villains in the arc, the first of which has already popped up, briefly, in an earlier issue. One batch of bad guys will be grizzled, gnarly, grumpy and tough... which you would pretty much expect of anyone after spending a couple of decades in Limbo. As for the other bad guys, let’s just say the magic word: Mutants, mutants and more mutants.

Nrama: How is this project going to differ from the work you've done on your other recent Marvel projects?

Kirk: I never know how to answer a question like this. I have a tendency to focus on what I need to do to make my current project successful rather than what differentiates it from my past projects. I suppose one difference will be having to pay more attention to young women’s fashion as there are four young women on the team.

Nrama: Anything else you want to tell fans about your upcoming work on New Mutants?

Kirk: Only that I hope everyone has as much fun reading this arc as I’m having drawing it. Okay, that one might be tough because I am having a serious crapload of fun over here. So I’ll just tell everyone to enjoy it to the degree that they feel comfortable. Any enjoyment beyond that, I will consider a bonus.

^ just another one of those "Iron Man through the Ages" variants they're coming out with to promote Iron Man 2. they did the same thing with Uncanny this week. id say thats Gladiator Iron Man.

Oh ok thanks! I thought it was like Karma or some other telepath with Psi-armor on

is Wolfsbane going to join the New Mutants after SC? she was absolutely useless in X-Force.

Doesnt sound like she will. Maybe an appearance or 2 but a recent interview from Wells seems like the book isnt getting any new permanent cast members anytime soon

NEW MUTANTS #12

STORY BY Zeb Wells
ART BY Ibraim Roberson
COVER BY Adi Granov
PUBLISHER: Marvel Comics
COVER PRICE: $2.99
RELEASE DATE: Wed, April 14th, 2010

SECOND COMING, CHAPTER THREE
Fall of a New Mutant?! The X-Men are hot on the trail of Cable and Hope and meet Bastion's forces head-on, in the form of Bastion's capo William Stryker and his Purifier army. Stryker's forces score one casualty early, but who wins the battle? At the same time the New Mutants are hitting Bastion's second-in-command, Cameron Hodge. But going up against Hodge and 100 of his soldiers is way out of their league and one of them won't walk away from it.

Wow. They had a contingency for Illy's magical powers. I'm impressed.

How did they know she was there? She's not a documented mutant. She wasn't there for M-Day. In fact, she should be listed as deceased.

I heard there's a spy among the X-men. Someone's been leaknig information to Bastion. My vote goes to Karima. I never liked the idea of a prime sentinel joining the team and prime sentinels were Bastion's foot soldiers in OZT. Although we havent seen her since she left for Utopia in Legacy 225, so that might kill that theory

If there is a spy, my money is on Dr. Kavita Rao. We're looking at a woman who views mutants as diseased, developed a "cure" to get rid of them, but ended up joining Hank's X-Club anyway. We didn't even see how she joined the X-Club. She just showed up in the lab one day next to Nemesis, Takiguchi, and Mads.

Good point and she makes sense. Other theories Ive read are Ariel and Donald Pierce. Ariel just showed up one day and has been helping them out but no one really knows much about her. Donald Pierce is actually allied with Bastion and hates mutants, but he's been locked up so I cant see how he could do much spying

That would be awesome if Karma is the spy and gets caught......well see. What about the prime sentinal that was with Rogue's team then went with the Marauders? She came over with Cargil, right? She would be my choice.

It would be cool if Namor was the spy also - be a nice way to separate him and the X-Men - 'cause he has to go.

That would be Karima, which is who Havok said, not Karma.

And I believe someone else said somewhere that Pierce is still a prisoner with the X-Men, and we've seen he still has a connection to Bastion through the virus, so it's likely just him.

Ive heard Pierce's name thrown out and his connection to Bastion makes sense but he's locked away in the basement in a holding cell. I cant see how useful he'd be as a spy considering he cant really go anywhere and do anything for him. A better spy would be someone with access to the X-men's records, plans and can freely move about Utopia gathering info. In his current status, Pierce really cant

Karima wasn't even in San Francisco, let alone involved in the move to Utopia. I doubt it was her.

Pierce is locked away and can't spy on anything.

Whoever it is, it's someone who isn't a mutant and can freely move around Utopia. That narrows it down to Dr. Kavita Rao (my best guess), Danger, Dr. Takiguchi before he passed away, Hepzibah (which is highly unlikely), or any number of depowered mutants (and I seriously doubt Dani or Prodigy would betray the X-Men).

If it's a mutant for whatever reason (brain washing, etc), then it could literally be any name the writers pull out of a hat.

From the one flash I remember seeing, Pierce wasn't feeding info like that to Bastion, but the fact that Bastion was connected to all of Pierce's senses. He sees what Pierce sees, hears what he hears, and so on, so anything that gets near Pierce, and likely Bastion has manipulated the senses to super human levels so he could hear sense stuff all over Utopia, so he doesn't really need to get all over the place to be a good spy if the virus and Bastion's tech have made it like that so he's not looked at as a likely suspect by the X-Men since they would think that since he's locked up, he can't get the info through normal means.
