I think she totally rocks that look. Can't wait to see her face off against Feral in the next issue.

NEW MUTANTS #9

STORY BY Zeb Wells
ART BY Paul Davidson

PUBLISHER: Marvel Comics
COVER PRICE: $2.99
RELEASE DATE: Wed, January 6th, 2010

What is Illyana Rasputin up to? In NEW MUTANTS #1, she returned from who knows where with knowledge that she says is from the future. A future where things aren’t going well for the X-Men. Emma Frost is not going to settle for this question being unanswered.

HA! Danger wants to bone Warlock. That's hysterical.

First, I love the art sooooooo much. Amazing.
Second, who is Doug implying Madison has feelings for?

As she used the Soulsword, a piece of her soul would get corrupted and as time went on, she'd develop a piece of armor on her. She also became more demonic with a horn and tail appearing. This aspect of her was referred to as Darkchylde and she struggled with the corruption. By the time Inferno came, her appearance became that of full demon. She treated back to Limbo and at the end of this story, her broken armor was found by Collosus, who found his 7 year old sister in there, not remembering any of her time as a teen. In retcon story, she was actually given the Legacy Virus, which she died from.

Thats the basics on her past. She hasnt gotten much focus since returning so unfortunatenly theres still some answered questionss. You can go to this link for more info as they have alot more details

http://uncannyxmen.net/db/spotlight/showquestion.asp?faq=10&fldAuto=85&page=5

Good question. Back when Illyana was first deaged, people speculated that the child that returned in Inferno, wasnt the same teen that was in New Mutants. Time is weird in Limbo as when she went there, she saw her younger self. But Marvel never really followed followed up. The writers changed, with Liefeld taking over and transforming the book into X-force soon after. Didnt take long for Marvel to have killed her off with the Legacy virus. Still it was left open that she could have returned, having only traded places with her younger self in that story. Her return in New X-men, kind of ignored that though and her her recreated via a spell Belasco did based on the residual essensce of her that was left in Limbo, following the HoM version of her briefly appearing courtesy of the Scarlet Witch. Where do her memories begin and end? I have no clue. I dont think she remmebers anything after Inferno. She came back kind of evil which is not how she left. X-fernus didnt really fill many gaps. Marvel needs to give her a mini bc theres too much that is going ignored

It only took 20 years but Marvel FINALLY resolved Illyana's dangling plot from Inferno in the latest issue of New Mutants. I cant beleive they let this one linger for so long.

so this Majik isnt THE Majik?
She is. She explained to Emma that during Inferno, when she went to limbo, she saw her younger self, before Belasco got a chance to corrupt her. In order to save her, Magik would cease to exist. She sent her back to Earth with her soul intact and when that happened Magik, in her fullly courrpt form, Darkchylde, stopped existing. Its why she has no recollection of anything that happened after Inferno. FF to the New X-men arc, Belasco brought her back using black magic and the residual remnants of her in Limbo. She had no soul though as that died with younger self that she sacrificed herself for. Thats why she came back all evil. She has some humanity due to her Soulsword but to fully restore her soul, she needs to find her bloodstones which is what she was doing in the future when she returned in the first issue

ahhh...welll that IS quite a nice explanation....soooo..is she ever gonna finish eating Pixie?

I think she's going to leave Pixie alone. Haha, I heard a funny theory today that maybe Hope was born with Illyana's lost soul. Doubt it though

Heh. Well, it could explain why she out of all the New Mutants was picked for the one Second Coming cover over all the others. I wonder if Hope could figure into something Majik saw in the future.

There's going to be a Second Coming: Hellbound mini. Maybe that takes place in Limbo with Illyana being the main character

I was trying to think where that Hellbound thing could lead, and that's a good possibility.

The New Mutants are back...in more ways than one. They are back as a team, back as a popular ongoing series, and - in the case of one teammate - back from the dead! As a result of the events of Marvel's current "Necrosha" storyline, Doug Ramsey (a.k.a. Cypher) has re-joined the New Mutants. And wherever self/soulfriend Doug goes, so goes the alien Warlock. It seems the team is almost ready to break out singing, "We are family..."

Instead of some off-key singing, however, we're here with something much better - "New Mutants" writer Zeb Wells, who will be answering your emails for today's X-POSITION.

All of you wrote in with some intriguing questions about the New Mutants and upcoming X-events, so let's see how self/smartwriter Wells answers. Let's roll...

We begin today's email with some praise from Christopher Judd, because that's a great way to start off a Q&A. Don't worry though, he had queries aplenty too.

You've done outstanding work on "New Mutants!" In particular, I'm so pleased with your handling of Illyana. Being given clarity to her whereabouts, motives, and who she actually is in issue #9 was fantastic. I'm really looking forward to future developments. And speaking of the future...

1) Can we expect any of those futures to be visited by her and her teammates, still seeking out her bloodstones?

The New Mutants are going to get drawn into Illyana's world very quickly after "X-Men: Second Coming," so I'd give you a definite "yes" on this one.

2) And the soldiers from Limbo? Have they targeted the New Mutants specifically, or are they victims due to their association with Illyana?

They have a connection to all of the New Mutants, but they're targeting Illyana because she has a connection to the Bloodstones. At the end of their story, it will be very hard to see them as victims.

3) Once their purpose is defined in issue #10, can we fans finally rest assured that the "New Mutants" title is here to stay? And with that assurance, should we expect new uniforms, as teased in issue #6?

This is comics, Chris - we're here to stay as long as we have readers. And if new uniforms will keep you around, consider it done early in our second year.

4) Will the New Mutants be participating in "X-Men: Second Coming?" I recall being lead to believe Illyana specifically would be stepping up and making a prominent appearance among her fellow X-Men. Is this true? Can we expect the same of her teammates?

Oh, yes. The New Mutants will be front and center with the rest of the X-Men during "X-Men: Second Coming." It's going to be intense.

How intense? Will the team be getting a bit more firepower to help in this battle? Brian Davis has a few suggestions on teammates that might need to "level up."

1) Will there ever be a story arc or an issue where we see Danielle Moonstar with her powers back? I love how she has been handling herself, but it would be nice to see her powers (if even temporarily). Also, I don't see enough Brightwind. I think he's feeling neglected...

Keep your peepers peeled for "New Mutants" #11, written by the esteemable Kieron Gillen.

2) Will we see more of what Magik does when she goes to Limbo? Any chance of seeing her power levels manifesting or explained? In the original series, she only did simple spells (e.g. levitation, astral projection, illusion casting) while on earth. Is there any new development to this? And is her power level the same or has it increased?

Illyana has definitely become more in tune with her magical side, and the second year will largely be about exploring her world and what it means for the rest of the team. She's definitely learned some new tricks...

3) I assume that Legion and Warlock will become regular cast members (or supporting cast) because they aren't used anywhere else. Am I wrong in this assumption? If not, are any other notable cast shake-ups or additions coming our way?

You're right about one, half-right about the other. There will be shake-ups as a result of "X-Men: Second Coming."

Ahab has a suggestion that would shake things up greatly...although not in a way the New Mutants might appreciate.

Is there any chance of seeing more of the Hellions in the future? With limited space to tell the "Necrosha" story, I know there probably wasn't much opportunity to give a nod to past history, but it sure would be nice to find out more about past history and others' reactions to their return...

I hear that, Ahab. I definitely want to get the Hellions back in the book ASAP.

And speaking of resurrected mutants, there was a character that Irma Cuckoo wanted to see in "Necrosha" who failed to make an appearance. Can you help her with an explanation?

Did you plan to use Cannonball's deceased brother Jay (a.k.a. Icarus) in your "Necrosha" arc? He seemed like a perfect character to torment Sam with...

I would have loved to, Irma, but it came down to a matter of space. As Ahab pointed out above, I barely had room to give the Hellions ample spotlight. I agree that was a missed opportunity, though...

Patricio Oliver thinks there is another opportunity you should be taking advantage of with a former New Mutant whose name is so nice, you have to say it twice...

1) Shouldn't Boom Boom be furious that Sam and Berto left her out of the team? Especially after none of them showed up when she was kidnapped in "X-Force?" Let's not forget, she used to date them...

I don't think Sam and Berto left her out of the team on purpose. She just wasn't available when the team came together. I think Boom Boom is jumping to conclusions here...classic Boom Boom.

2) Does the New Mutants team know that Rusty was among the technozombies?

They'll definitely be made aware of it after the fact.

3) Where is Warlock's son?

He's back in space doing his space "stuff" while Dad visits earth.

4) Would it be too much to ask to give Shan a girlfriend? Aren't there any other lesbian girls besides Bling and her on the island? Please?

Yes, it would be too much to ask. I like my characters to experience the same soul-crushing dry spells I went through in my 20's. Seriously, though, as soon as I can fit it in, I will.

Sorry to hear about those dry spells. I wonder what that's like? As a comic book fan, I've never suffered such a dilemma. Hm, maybe we need to start up a dating thread on CBR's X-forums?

Before we get to that, however, it's time for some "Behind the X" fun where our readers get to know some of the secrets that make the X-writers tick. Zeb, here's my question for you: many of us have met celebrities at one time or another during our lives. If you could, tell us about a "star" you were a huge fan of that you actually got to meet and what occurred at the meeting...

I met Ken Foree, star of "Dawn of the Dead" (the real one) at Wizard World once. He signed a picture "Die hard, baby." I'm afraid it doesn't get better than that.

I love this pic~ Marvel should make a whole chess with the X-characters, I'll so buy it.

until it was canceled and relaunched as X-Force...which also got canned...eventually..of course there are years between those books' respective launches and their cancellations. just *****in..cuz i can
Except it wasnt cancelled. Cancelled implies that it failed and/or had low sales, neither of which was the case. After 100 issues, it was kind of redundant to still be calling them the New Mutants as they were no longer new. They were originally created as the successors to the X-men but after so many years, they outgrew that and it was time for them to move on, hence the relaunch as X-force. The last year of the series, was pretty much a prologue to X-force as once Cable came on, the book and the team already started changing.

She is. She explained to Emma that during Inferno, when she went to limbo, she saw her younger self, before Belasco got a chance to corrupt her. In order to save her, Magik would cease to exist. Could you dumb that down for me because the explanation in the issue didn't help in anyway and this is knd of confusing.

Im not sure how to simplify it anymore while keeping all the important details, but I'll try

Illyana was originally 5 yrs old when she went into Limbo. She spent 10 years in there and during that time, she gained her mutant powers, learned witchcraft and manifested her Soulsword. She emerged from Limbo, and only a few minutes had passed on Earth. She then joined the New Mutants.

Everytime she used her Soulsword, a piece of her soul would be lost, and she would manifest a small piece of armor. By the time, the Inferno story took place, she was fully corrupted and appeared demon like. She went to Limbo and while there, she saw her younger self, before she was corrupted. Only one of them could exist on Earth, so Illyana sacrified herself and sent the young child back. When that happened, she ceased to exist and what was left of her, dissipitated as residual energy throughout Limbo. Young Illyana, ended up dying of the Legacy Virus

Now during HoM, the Scarlet Witch's spell temporarily brought back teen Illyana and she interacted with the New X-men. This alarmed Belasco, a demon and ruler of Limbo, who was the one that kidnapped Illyana years earlier. He used magic to recreate her from that residual energy that was left in Limbo and we saw her evil and fully corrupted. The reason for this is bc she has no soul as it died when her younger self did. The Soulsword she yields, is a small portion of her soul, but its not fully resotred

Im not sure if this helps as I basically reiterated what I wrote before. If possible, Id recommend getting the Inferno TPB. That was the culmination of Magik's storyline and the best way to fully understand what happened with her and how it ties in with the character today
