Ultimate fan and Kevin Roegele, great reviews. I share similar views towards the movie as well.

The emphasis was to make Superman appear more as a mythical savior rather than a superhero. The music, the tone, even little things. Did anyone notice when the plane started nose diving, that there's a quick flash of the stewardist with her hands clasped together in praying position, then it cuts to Superman coming behind fast and the choir music in the background? Really cool metaphor to me. But that's just me. I notice little things like that.

I should do a full review. I have to force myself to.

Could just get someone to do it for you. Who should I give this job to? (Puts on consigliere face). :)

Heh Heh.

I will do a better late than never review sooner rather than later.

I wouldnt call it "little things" they layed the Jesus allegory pretty thick and obvious.

I doubt anyone noticed that part of the plane sequence though.

Pretty blatant. I mean the ****ing choir music and the woman praying gave it away. How slow do you think audiences are?
The whole movie was pretty much a big Jesus piece almost (Personally the way he shot through the clouds after recharging himself through the sun and the hospital scene were the biggest indications.....that and every mainstream media outlet talking about the Christ comparisons). It's like my man Lazydork said "They laid the Jesus comparison pretty thick...and you'd have to be pretty thick to not notice".
One of the reasons why I didnt like the movie too much....way too much forced stuff in there

Agreed, it was way too think. I sat down and watched The Quest for Peace Saturday for ****s and giggles, I rank Returns the same as Peace, pure crap

I wouldnt say it was complete crap, I would be lying if I said I hated 100% and didnt enjoy it slightly but I dont know what is was....but I wasnt thrilled like when I saw X2, Spidery 2 and BB. Like the movie is good and I do understand and respect Singer's bold vision....I just dont think it was great and Singer knows he can do better. I suppose he knew it was a mainstream big WB popcorn flick and he focused more on making Superman just iconic rather than getting down to the grits of a story like he did with X-Men or Nolan with Begins. It was ehhh....alright. Special effects were great but if I had to be picky they had been done before (credit still to the crew)

overall it's a 3/5...lightly entertaining if not uninspiring at times

I agree. 3/5 is about the same rating I gave it. Enjoyable, but there's nothing really new.

Honestly, Spider-Man and Batman Begins had a more exciting and interesting enviroment to play with.

You just can't hold back on Superman, and expect people to blindly worship him because he's Superman. You have to go all the way and prove to the audience why he's the ultimate superhero.

I personally feel superman returns reminded folks that superman was the first hero and was a reminder of the reason people liked the films: sometimes you just wish there was someone to save the day in chaotic circumstances, and i think especially with events of nowadays the legend was reiterated quite strongly.

I do enjoy how they focused the role of this super being as a protector of planet earth as a whole. I think that was a nice touch to update the mythos. And yes, the parallell with biblical references was cool too i found. Just goes to show you can find inspiration in everyday beliefs etc.

fighting in the street

not to mention, we are going to see the nuclear man 1 street fight scene!

Depends on the audience. And I didn't see the references being anymore blatant than the way other interpretations have done them.

Your audience must be naive as hell and this Superman really did make him out to be a christ like figure as opposed to other interpretations. I mean what were you thinking when you saw the Teaser Trailer?

It's a moot point anyway, Singer even said he injected spirituality into film by his own admission. He just didnt have to lay it on. Fact is, non-Superman fans might find that a little overbearing that's all

I never specified a certain audience. And it's just my opinion that some other interpretations have been just as blatant with it.

If they do, they do. I didn't find it overbearing, at least not as much as the first Matrix film laid it on.

Christ Figure references in SUPERMAN RETURNS were not not exactly piled on, and they were no more blatant than they were in any comics incarnation or SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, or even the original concept from Shuster and Siegel. "Kal-El" and "Jor-El" do mean something. The Christ Figure is an accepted aspect of literature, and can be found in many mythologies.

Precisely.

Singer portrayed Superman in as a general messianic figure, a saviour, moreso than specifically a Christ reference.
