^^^ well, i did't say it was one hell of a movie or a blockbuster...i just said i liked it better than SR...way better...

i'm one of those marvel zombies who as a matter of faithfulness will hate anything dc (bad attitude to have iagree) i once made a thread about how much bb was gonna suck and almost got banned along with thorfan and enmma frost (dunno if those guys post anymore) so i was shocked when i really enjoyed bb (christian bale is awesome and bb was so well directed and the story was solid) and i said to myself "oh well i love christian bale, that must have been it" (denial)

well i watched sr the other night and i gotta say "i fookin' loved it". in my opinion i enjoyed it more than f4 and daredevil and even more than the hulk (my mindless love for marvel made me love hulk) It was a fantastic movie full of action in all the right places and interaction between all the characters was spot on, i was rivetted. brandon was an awesome kent/superman and i was really there with all the characters.

i dunno why i made this thread but i know a lot of you guys loved this movie whilst people are ripping it to the shiznit so i just wanna say to anyone who loved this movie thta i, as a diehard marvel zombie thoroughly enjoyed spending 3 hours with "your" character and i really hope that theres a sequel

ps i went to watch sr grumbling and under duresse but i'm now trying to convince me buds to watch it again.

viva la superman

Glad you liked it Offspring. I saw it again for the 6th time this past Monday and a friend went but later on said he didn't really want to see it again, he just went because I was going. I think I'm turning my friends against it.

Cool story offspring.....too many people would never say what you just did.

Well, even though i prefer Marvel characters, i will go and watch any superhero movie, because i just love the genre. I went into SR with high expections, and it met them, thats why i went to see the movie another 2 times.

Superman Returns
2006
Brian Singer
9/10

This was the superhero film I was waiting for, so it should come as no surprise that I'm in a seeming minority for loving it. Superman is a hard character to make interesting. Simply put, he's perfect, and perfection is boring. How do you create dramatic tension without character flaws? Singer came up with a fantastic answer: give perfection a price. Throughout the entire movie, Clark Kent attempts to fit back into his old life, but he finds this impossible, as the world needs Superman at every moment of every day; and as Superman, he can save humanity, but it's obvious he could never have a life among them. Superman can save Lois, but she needs someone who doesn't belong to the world when it comes to love and support. When he descends from the sky bearing the Daily Planet Globe, he is Atlas, bearing the weight of the world on his shoulders, and that is his fate. When Lex spouts that seemingly "campy real-estate" line about "Two places cannot share the same space, it's simple physics", he's not talking about New Krypton, he's talking about the major theme of this movie. This all comes to a head in that great 15-20 minutes after Superman has saved the world from New Krypton. The paramedics try and save their savior, only to find that there is nothing they can do to help him. As he lies on his deathbed, his own mother can't even say goodbye to him in person, she's just another face in a crowd of millions. When he wakes he finds he has a son who he can never be a father to, something that is heartbreaking because we all seek to rectify the inadequacies of our own parents. Yet, even under these tremendous burdens, Superman continues to bare his role as savior. We come to understand that what makes him so amazing is not that he can change the course of mighty rivers, but that he does so for people he can never be a part of. That is a strong and moving thematic, and it is strengthened by the most gorgeous cinematography I have seen in ages. I'm a strong proponent of film, but this movie basically proved HD will make it obsolete. The images were breathtakingly beautiful from start to finish. Add a great score and great acting on all parts (Routh is fantastic, not just in line delivery but in his stoically pained observance of a world he longs to be part of) and you have one fantastic film. I really hope WB signs Singer on for a sequel because to see him improve on what he has created would really be a treat.

kinda like spider-man 2. So superman can't raise his own son? That's terrible.

He'll train him and they'll both save the world together. You'll see.

fantastic review. I agree. I liked how the double edged sword of perfection was displayed, while at the same time giving us the awe inspiring aura that superman didnt give me completely in previous films.. mostly because Singer took the material a bit more serious and really sold this idea to you. Reeve was funny and all, but i personally forget this is a huge god like man and it becomes more like a sketch. Not here.

Clark's a A god among men. Superman Returns was great.

Well superman's a farm boy more than a god or Jesus like Savior, I think.... that's really just what I've heard though.

returns, great? Of course. But only because of Jason.

Really this story of superman is one hell of a depressing one. Good grief, people. This is what you wanted... wow.

He will named by his mother Lois, since she named Superman: Munchkin Boy or Little Burrito. Once he develops into a full grown man he can change his name to Captain Strudel or Burrito Supreme.

I found out today that the IMax 3D version is going to start showing on Sept 1st at the Imax theater closest to where I live. I am hoping I can make it to see it.

After pondering a good bit, I'm almost 100% sure that if there were 1 supervillain such as Superman having a first encounter with Metallo (heck leave Braniac mysterious for now) it would have brought in a bigger audience. A few more money action shots, a fight between Supes and Metallo, maybe ending up in a draw... That would have kept the casual audience into it while not alienating the Superman fan base. I feel it was a good origin story and saw the point of no supervillain, but at the same time if there were one I wouldn't have objected so it would have helped the film more than hurt it.

WOW...tons of 8,9,10s....so people did dig this movie...Glad so see that

Yep and a completely different plot for Lex would have been a big help.

Let's see:

Lex in a real estate scheme (never mind the fact it would be beyond comprehension as to when he would technically "cash in" on his newly owned "land" or "continent" or whatever...does he own construction companies too?)

Supes saving Lois from an aircraft

Lex having the weak female sidekick that effectively ruins his plans

Oafish Clark Kent

Jor-el

Etc, etc.

This movie was really such a copy of the first Superman, and really not a good copy at that. It seemed Routh tried WAY too hard to be like Reeve, Lex was really the same slickster Hackman was, perhaps a tad smidge "darker", the basic premise of SMTM was throughout Returns. Sure, now he has a kid, but come on.

It was truly a letdown for me. I honestly didn't even think the action was great. It had its moments, but overall, I am amazed at how many people liked this movie.

Well we have $360 million Worldwide now. Don't know where the box office thread went but thats good news  I loved the movie and for all the positive reviews it should have made more money, its strange.

Not so strange really. Reviews mean nothing these days - critics have lost their power due to the internet being the one to give us the exclusive information and images.

Singer was too indulgent and dark... the movie needed a brighter touch and more person vs person action.... If people are going to be persuaded to see Superman remade and repackaged, they want something new and exciting.

Yeah well... if people are beginning to listen to complaining fansites now... this means critics have lost to geeks. Thats horrific lol

If this is the answer then that truly means superman still won in my book.

And perhaps this was a fluke that may be changed. All i know is it was strangely close to my style and ill enjoy it while it lasts.

I don't think that's the case. The media runs a lot of previews of upcoming movies (in newspapers, movie magazines, cable channels) in which they show clips or discuss things... those create a positive or negative buzz. I don't think fansites enter into the wider equation unless they are mentioned as part of that buzz.

It's interesting to see the darker colours of the SR suit are NOT as dark in a shop window display at a bookstore near me that has some of the book merchandise connected to the movie. The colours are more like the classic red and blue and yellow.

I'm not a huge fan of the movie. I saw it, I was disappointed... despite the wonderful moments and Bryan's production values. I think it needed a much fresher look to succeed in an era when King Kong proved that long remakes do not entice viewers these days.

The movie's question 'Does the World Need Superman?' seems quite ironic considering its underperformance...

I should hope so.

Imo it was fresh while being a throwback all at once... i think if he makes another film the fresh aspects will be forefront. So i guess the differences are lost to many in the (re)mix if they expected much less homage.

For instance, the first half of superman 78 seems to be developed into an entire film now imo, instead of half drama and then comedy for the second half. Theres a mood that was kept this time and i like it. Never before did i believe superman could exist until this version  It makes you think for a second that krypton indeed existed and perished with that spectacular beginning with crisp sfx, and some methods many fans hate elevated the plot and never made you forget it as authentic in film imo. very nice.

Singer brought a serious emphasis on the plot that the others didnt for me, but i know its a franchise thats supposed to be more tongue in cheek and friendly etc, while being current in the sense of comic storylines.
