The POTC3 opening is certainly not weak, but it´s a bit disappointing.

It was a very strong opening. Not record shattering like some expected, but it instantly begins the three horse race through the summer.

Well the 400 millions fro AWE include Monday...overseas and USA...

Spidey 381 in 5 days overseas and 3 days USA

Pirates 400 in 6 days overseas and 4-1/2 days in USA including memorial Monday.

Anyway $806,742,000 for Spidey is off the hook, amazing, spectacular, sensational, your friendly neigborhood :D:D:D:D

You have to remember that Spider-man had 783 millions to build on...Pirates had 1.65 billion,so the similar numbers overseas are amazing..

POTC3 hit 400 million world wide already?

I predicted a 400 WW holiday weekend. No suprise to me. What I was surpised at was the domestic #'s. I was thinking 160 to 180 domestic for the 4 days, not including Thursday, and I was not alone in that thinking. What everyone including myself miscalculated was, the strenght of the movies still around. Pirates 2 opended unopossed.

Can Spidey hit 600 million overseas? I say it'll come close to 570m

With Shrek 3 opening overseas, plus FF 2, plus Pirates, its a long shot. It's going to get crowed overseas in June. I say 550 to 570 is about right. It's at 500 now. I say Spiddy will top out at about 900 WW. 350 domestic, 550 overseas. Mabey 330, and 570.

I didn't think Pirates had much of a shot of beating Spidey with Shrek and Spidey still in theaters. I did know for sure Shrek would suffer the most being sandwiched between these two monsters. Sure it'll have decent legs but Dreamworks should have swallowed their pride and moved to a more isolated date. Shrek would make big money in almost any month...even August.

900 should be in the bag. When I saw opening weekend I thought even a billion was possible but that's to far away now. They shouldn't have these monster releases so close to one another 3-4 weeks apart is fine. It's not like there's not room in the Summer for 4-5 major releases like this...but not in one month. Spidey had the best date to open. This is why I'm starting to think Iron Man might really shock alot of people at the box office. It's a fresh franchise on film, a great cast, and it's going to be just awesome. It opens up the movie season too with no competition. Day the Earth Stood still won't keep that spot, and Speed Racer while cool is 2 weeks away and probably wont' attract the same domestic crowd as Iron Man. Overseas is turning into a goldmine for Marvel now as well.

MONDAY UPDATE: Uphill sailing for 'Pirates' - with 3-day of $115M, 4-day of $142M and 5-day of $156.5M, Captain Jack may not reach $300M!

by Steve Mason

As I reported Sunday night, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (Buena Vista) didn’t tail off as much as the industry expected on Sunday. My number Sunday night was $32.12M and the studio estimate this morning (Monday) is 5% higher at $33.83M.

As for the studio 4-day estimates for “the big 3,” the Exclusive FantasyMoguls.com Early 4-Day Estimates were darn good. These numbers are especially good considering that everyone in the business was still thinking that P3 would deliver an out-of-this-world number for the weekend.

This is a sub-par opening for Captain Jack, far below last summer’s Dead Man’s Chest. With the 2-hour, 47-minute running time, a lukewarm critical reception and major competition in the weeks ahead, including Knocked Up (Universal), Ocean’s Thirteen (Warner Bros), Surf’s Up (Sony) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (Fox), it’s hard to imagine how At World’s End will get to $300M domestic. With a $350M+ budget, Disney will need the excellent international grosses to pay the production and marketing bills. Yes, P3: AWE is the new 4-day Memorial Day weekend box office champion, but make no mistake about it, this is a disappointment. It’s not a bomb. The movie didn’t tank. Nobody is in financial ruins. But, the Pirates franchise seems to have run its course.

I ended up seeing POTC3 twice this weekend and was annoyed/disappointed in it the first time but lot of the things I found annoying were gone the second time but it still was boring and felt three hours long.

With SM3 I thought it could be 30 minutes longer and still be good but with POTC they needed to cut out 30 minutes of it and some of the storylines(Captain Sao was dumb, Majority of Calypso stuff was bad.)

Yeah. That movie had alot of WTF moments! A giant weird looking chick that supposedly is a godess with crabs? w/e. At least Spider-man 3 was easy to follow, and I never said "Well that is dumb"

I agree that the Calypso part was dumb, but come on so was the whole Peter Parker dancing scene.

SM3 was funny bruh! When he came out of the store and did his little dance,.............priceless! :woot: I can even understand the jazz club scenes. Hell, I would do that for my gf.........but I can't dance. :csad:

I find it funny that this month has had THREE films make over 100 millon dollars in their opening weekends, yet I just read a yahoo article calling the three underperformers. People expect reacords too much, even though Spidey has a bunch, Pirates has a few, Shrek made the most in its opening weekend for a cartoon. They make not make more than their predecessors over here in the states, but this is still a great time for the movie business.

I think it´s because these movies generated too much expectation. SM3 may be underperforming a little domestically, but it´s doing tremendously well overseas, which is unusual for comic book movies.

I agree! Everything is a disappointment let people tell it! I know a certain superhero in a red cape that would kill for the numbers of SM3, Shrek3, or AWE! I'm never letting that movie off the hook!! :woot:

I should be more mature but............

Nice avator! I can't wait for that movie to come out! Sadly, I don't think Batman can come close to Spidey's numbers cuase he's to dark and honestly, the way Batman is sounding.........I wouldn't be surprised if it got a R rating, which it won't but, it's very psychological and gritty.

Yeah, it was pretty ballsy of WB to make the main villain of a PG-13 summer tentpole look like this.
