Yes, freeing Sam up to return for Spider-Man 4 is much better news to me. I couldn't care less about any hobbits. SM4 now has a decent chance for the entire gang to return for one last great romp.

I wasn't hot on the idea of Raimi doing the Hobbit films as was rumored for awhile, but Del Toro would be absolutely awesome if Jackson really isn't going to do it himself (which I wish he was).

I don't know if I'd call it lighter. The story is more focused, though, and doesn't have as many subplots running through it. The thing that intrigues me the most is the talk of taking a bunch of material that Tolkien had left behind that was unfinished that sort of finishes tying The Hobbit to the Rings trilogy that his son has supposedly finished fleshing out and using it to do a second film. That could turn out really badass with Jackson and Del Toro behind it and be something nobody has seen or read before to really cap off the series.

As for the voice of Smaug, it depends on what you want really. I would prefer Clancy Brown.

I actually love the idea of Roderigo Santoro as Smaug. I've been behind him for a while. I think you could essentially transpose Xerxes' voice, complete with accent and slight vocal modification, straight onto Smaug and it would be INCREDIBLE! No Connery/Neeson/Irons style Smaug, please.

That same overrated *****e nozzle Jackson made three LOTR that were and are critically acclaimed and won many Academy Awards. Believe me, if these films were as bad as you say they are, they wouldn't have had the measure of success that they had then and are still receiving to this very day.

And while Del Toro is a great director(Loved Pans Labyrinth, Blade II, Devils Backbone, and Hellboy). I'd rather see Jackson continue the story that he helped bring to life. If not Jackson then I'm not really sure who would be a good choice.

i've seen a little bit of Pan's Labrynth, and i've seen Hellboy 1, and i liked both of those films, so del Toro would be a good replacement for PJ..

I had no idea that Del Toro was prepping AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. That would be amazing.

Although, THE HOBBIT, done right, would be amazing, too. It's definitely not as "dark" as THE LORD OF THE RINGS is, at least in terms of the themes, but it does tend to have more adventure and cleverness to it.

If that's the case then I would have no problem with it. I'd love to see what Del Toro would do with Smaug. As long as WETA is still part of the special effects project then I'm all for it.

New Line and Jackson settled their disagreements so everyone would be working on this movie.

Just FYI, they can't write a script until the strike is over or an individual agreement with New Line and WGA is made. More than likely, one would think Jackson, Walsh, Boyen, et all would do story work or writing for the movie. Though Del Toro likes to direct his own scripts, so that might have an affect.

Personally, I think it's rather much to turn it into two movies, and basically make another LOTR franchise. But you know, conglomerates and studios feel like sequels, prequels, remakes, whatever are the only options these days.

There's no way Ian Holm is coming back as Bilbo.

I'd much rather see Del Toro do Hobbit then Hellboy 3. Why? Because if he does Hobbit and it does well he'll be able to cement himself and do whatever he wants including all his passion projects and stuff like Pan's Labryinth.

Word. Tarzan's never really been handled properly on film. Disney came pretty close but they watered him down with g-rated goodness too much.
