Is this going to be a trilogy like LOTR? The animated version was only one film but I heard there will be at least two.

They said they want a Hobbit film and then a prequel to LOTR trilogy... makes no sense to me... thats what you cal ****ing it out

Call me a whiny fan boy. But i feel like i should be ecstatic about Raimi on the Hobbit :( but of course that would mean no Raimi on spidey 4 which means we would lose the current cast. In some peoples opinion that would be good, but that would be a sad day for me:(.

Plus i want P.J to do the Hobbit.

Actually, for the animated movies, ROTK was techally a sequel to The Hobbit not LOTR.

The Hobbit in 2009?
Source: The New York Times
February 18, 2007

Despite his falling out with "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy director Peter Jackson, who sued New Line regarding "The Fellowship of the Ring," New Line founder and co-chairman Robert K. Shaye is pressing ahead and eyeing a 2009 release for The Hobbit.

The New York Times interviewed Shaye last week and said:

And he would not comment on reports in the news media that the "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi had been asked to direct "The Hobbit." He said, however, that although there was no workable script yet for the film, he intended to release it in 2009.

Will Sam Raimi, or another director come on board? Stay tuned for more news as it comes in regarding the high profile project.

It sounds like Shaye wants this movie done just to piss off Peter Jackson & does not care about the quality of it. I wonder what MGM will have to say about this. Since they handle distrubution & is the ones with the rights etc.

Um doesn't the film rights fall out before this back to MGM. I mean can New Line make it in 2009. Also do they really think they can make a hobbit movie as good without Jackson let alone with Out Sir Ian McKellan, Hugo Weaving or Ian Holm. Sorry without the key actors i'm not interested. Unless they get the writers Pirates writers Ted and Terry on this.

On the eve of what is expected to be the biggest Spider-Man yet, Entertainment Weekly learns that director Sam Raimi is seriously considering directing The Hobbit—a choice that could potentially leave Spidey 4 without a director and, says Kirsten Dunst, a leading lady.

Raimi's name has been floated in connection with The Hobbit ever since a very public dustup between Peter Jackson and New Line chairman Bob Shaye left the Lord of the Rings prequel without a director. Raimi went on the record for the first time about his potential involvement in the project during an exclusive interview with EW's Steve Daly for the magazine's Summer Preview issue, on stands Friday: "Peter Jackson might be the best filmmaker on the planet right now. But, um, I don't know what's going to happen next for me right now. First and foremost, those are Peter Jackson and Bob Shaye's films. If Peter didn't want to do it, and Bob wanted me to do it—and they were both ok with me picking up the reigns—that would be great. I love the book. It's maybe a more kid-friendly story than the others."

Well there's no way in the world that PJ is doing the Hobbit and it gets really agitating when stupid fanboys say that he's the only person on earth who's capable of doing a Middle Earth film. And on the other hand, Raimi has already said this may be his last Spidey film, so the chances of him doing the Hobbit are nice, and I think he'd do a great job.

Go Sam!

Sorry to sound like a typical stupid fanboy Mr Socko but the thought of anyone but PJ finishing The Middle Earth series of movies just doesnt feel right. If there's more, I want them to have the same continuity and tone of LOTR. Any new director is going to try and make it their own and quite frankly they dont need it IMO.

No, I understand if people want PJ to come back, it's just when they go overboard saying he's the only person who could possibly direct a good LOTR film

Sam Raimi on Spider-Man 4 = fail

Sam Raimi on Hobbit = fail

Sam Raimi on Evil Dead 4 = WIN!

Make it so.

Would he be willing to go back to the cult horror films?

After PJ got successful, he sure as hell didn't. He did Kong, and Halo coming up.

I know, and that's what depresses me. The Evil Dead films are cult classics and everything but, realistically would he go from directing a billion dollar franchise to a low budget cheese fest that probably wouldn't even make back it's budget in theaters (even though it would be awesome). I mean it's easy to call him a "sell out" but you really can't blame him.

The sad thing is though, he won't let anyone else touch the Evil Dead franchise, either.

The good news is... the semi-sequel "My Name Is Bruce" (Evil Dead 3.5 FTW!) is coming out, and it's being Directed by Bruce himself (as well as being the star, obviously), Sam Raimi is producing it, and brother Teddy has a role in it as well. so I'm thinking if it actually turns out half decent, maybe Raimi would agree to at least take up the Executive Producer role and let Bruce direct Evil Dead 4.

I agree. I don't think either is a sell-out. They're just making money. The Evil Dead Movies are great but they don't put as much food on the table as Spider-Man does!

As for the second part, I didn't know about "My Name is Bruce", but that sounds cool.

What about The Shadow? It sounds like a very intersting project for Raimi.

There's a saying in my film school: There are two reasons to make films. You either make a film for artistic purposes or you make a film to make money. My professors say if you don't make a film for either of those reasons, then you are what they call in the industry a "jerk." There's no such thing as selling out when it comes to filmmaking.

i doubt MGm would move through this project.

IF shaye think he can getaway with it, he's wrong. MGM and jackson, are going to do everything in thier power to stop it from happening,. and im pretyy sure the films rights would be reverting back soon or has it already..

Raimi would be more than capable of doing this. I think he is a great directo, and has more variety in what he can tell than the vast majority of director's are capable. I would be a little disappointed not to have a Raimi SM4, but I would be equally as curious to see someone else try it (just like I think Jackson isn't the only director for the Tolkien verse).

Better to have Sam Raimi directing "The Hobbit" instead of Bryan Singer, that much is certain.
