Did they confirm this is a two parter of is that a rumor?

Also who should be Bilbo?

Martin Freeman should be Bilbo, without a doubt.

At the very least, it ought to be someone older than Elijah, Sean et al when they played the hobbits. Bilbo reads as a character who is much more "settled down" in The Hobbit than Frodo is in The Fellowship of The Ring.

Hahah! I really can't say anything polite to that. :)

Your entitled to your view.

I think that Bilbo should be different to Frodo; for variety, for the tone of the book/movies, and for the age issue.

In any case, Elijah as Frodo, in my opinion, gave the best performance possible for someone who was slightly miscast.

Finally, I am simply not a big Toby fan, and I think the movies deserve a better lead.

I am not a fan of Tobey's either I just like that he has a hobbit size build and could definitely pull it off. Now his acting might be an issue but he actually acts in movies other than Spider-Man.

Are you trying to imply he has problems acting wise?

I think it's pretty obvious that Eddie Murphey should be Bilbo.

Yup. And he could also play Beorn, Gandalf, Thorin and the rest of the dwarves, Gollum, Smaug, the Wargs, the Trolls, the Orcs and his eyeball could make a cameo as Sauron. There ya go! The entire movie has been cast!

Ian Mckellen isn't getting any younger. When is this suppose to come out?

Hell, Christopher Lee's arteries are filled with tree sap by this point and he's still cavorting around. I think those two are pretty much in decent health.

Chris Lee is done... I mean cmon the guy is freaking 90... you can't get anything else out of him at this point... God Bless him for all that he has given us up until now though... as far as Ian... well you might as well recast both guys... get an Ewan Mcgregor type actor. Get a younger, more fit actor in there... you can always attach a grey beard on there and make anyone look like a Wizard really.

The only person I can think of who is more "Bilbo-esque" than Martin Freeman was Ian Holm himself. Bilbo is not supposed to be a young doe-eyed Hobbit like Frodo and his friends, he's supposed to be one who is well set up, and seems like a very unlikely choice to be the dwarves' 14th traveller. Also, if they were to go from the flashback of Ian Holm as Bilbo at the start of Lord of the Rings to having someone like say, Toby Maguire or James McAvoy, it wouldn't really do a whole lot for consistency. I'm not saying Freeman looks old, but he looks much more reminiscent of the Bilbo that we already know and love, rather than looking like the fifth hobbit from LOTR who got cut due to time constraints.

Tobey as Bilbo is the strangest suggestion I've ever heard...

Tobey McGuire would make an excellent *****, you mean.

What the ****, I just went to imdb and there actually is an LOTR spoof with the character named *****. Jesus.

Now I have to go find it.

i wish there was some way they could get Ian Holm to do it, its going to drive me nuts seeing him in the flashback of FOTR all the time and then having another actor in the Hobbit

So is Ian Holm not a part of The Hobbit? I was under the impression that he would be. (Please forgive me, I'm not up to speed on all of the news and rumors.)

I doubt he'll want someone to pin his face back like they did to make him young in FOTR... for much much much longer than what he did in FOTR.

Agree with that, more or less. It's a real shame that Ian Richardson died recently, as I think he would have made a brilliant successor to Lee's Saruman.

I don't agree with that at all. A young handsome actor made up as an old man would have only comedic value. I suppose you are making some sort of analogy with Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor's portrayals of Obi Wan Kenobi. The crucial difference is that Gandalf The Grey in 'The Hobbit' is no younger than Gandalf The Grey in 'The Lord of the Rings'. He has always been in the same physical guise for as long as he has been on Middle Earth.

He does become younger, physically, when reborn as Gandalf The White, however. It is worth remembering, therefore, that Sir Ian McKellen was acting much older than he was when he played Gandalf in "The Fellowship of The Ring". So, he will have grown into the role rather than out of it by now.
