Gerard Butler To Star
Gerard_Butler_1.jpg

Just days after Millennium Films acquired the spec "Olympus Has Fallen" from first-time scribes Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, "300" star Gerard Butler has signed on to topline the action pic.Described as "Die Hard" in the White House, story follows a down-on-his-luck ex-Secret Service agent who becomes America's only hope when 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. is taken over by terrorists.
Butler and his manager Alan Siegel will produce with Millennium prexy Mark Gill, while Avi Lerner will exec produce with Trevor Short. Production is skedded to start in September.
Butler has a trio of films coming out this year including Curtis Hanson's surfing pic "Of Men and Mavericks," and he's set to star in Lakeshore Entertainment's diamond-heist thriller "Brilliant," which starts shooting this spring in Boston.
Thesp is repped by CAA and Alan Siegel Entertainment.

"It's been a while old friend. I missed you when Worthington borrowed your services", Gerald said to his Bad American Accent.

Sounds good to me I dont get why he didnt just do action movies after 300 instead of diving into rom coms.

I think Gerald always had weird taste in film. If you look at his resume, his filmography was uneven..even before 300. 300 was just out of sheer luck.

The guy has action star written all over him he really makes weird choices he was the Phantom lol.

No, if this were the 90's it would be the president as the hero, freeing hostages and snapping necks.

Antoine Fuqua Set To Direct
Antoine Fuqua has an offer and is in early talks to direct Olympus Has Fallen, an Nu Image/Millennium action thriller that has been described as “Die Hard in the White House."
The project achieved new urgency last week after Columbia acquired White House Down, its own Die Hard-esque script set at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The studio plunked down $3 million for the script by Jamie Vanderbilt and is in talks with Roland Emmerich, who memorably blew up the White House in 1996's Independence Day, to direct.

Olympus has a leg up on Down because it already has an actor attached. THR previously reported that Gerard Butler is on board to star as an unlikely Secret Service agent trying to stop terrorists who have taken over the White House.
The script, by first-time scribes Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, was picked up by Millennium in early March. The race to the screen is so intense, according to insiders, that Millennium is fast-tracking Olympus for a June production start.
Butler is producing with Millennium president Mark Gill; the two worked together onLaw-Abiding Citizen). Butler's manager Alan Siegel also is producing.
Fuqua may be best known for directing Training Day, the crime thriller that won Denzel Washington an Oscar for best actor, and he most recently directed the 2009 crime drama Brooklyn’s Finest. He is repped by CAA and Ziffren Brittenham.

It sounds like Air Force One, but I think the title is actually pretty good. Even though it's been awhile since 9/11 a movie about Middle Eastern terrorists taking over the White House would not be a bad plot, if that's indeed who they use for the antagonists. Them being angry over the war in Iraq would be a great thing to bring home.

Many people say these 90s style political thrillers are not realistic, I would think that the events of 9/11 should have literally shattered that notion with the World Trade Center because that was a bigger hit than most of these cheesy movies ever had.

This was my ideal plot for Die Hard 5. :(

Not a big fan of Butler but Fuqua is solid, certainly a lot better than Emmerich directing the similar sounding White House Down.

It sounds like a 90's movie.

That's a good thing!

The movie changed its name to White House Taken.

Here's a teaser-poster.

They should've called it Taken: White House so GA will assume it to be the Liam Neeson sequel. :oldrazz:

Olympus Has Fallen is so much better as a movie title than this bland and uninteresting alternative.

The old title was better, this title almost feels like a move to ward off the other movie as it's so similar.

Actually the title still stands. Now with Aaron Eckhart:

Aaron Eckart has been elected President of the United States for the action thriller Olympus Has Fallen, Variety reports.

Set up at Nu Image/Millennium Films, the Antoine Fuqua film also has Gerard Butler attached to play an ex-Secret Service agent who must defend the White House from terrorists.

Written by newcomers Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, production on Olympus was previously reported to begin in September, but it's being fast-tracked to race against the similarly-themed White House Down, set up at Sony Pictures.

Eckhart, who recently appeared in The Rum Diary, can next be seen in I, Frankenstein, set for release on February 22, 2013.
