What are your thoughts about this guys?

Can it get a nomination for the art direction or visual effects?

I think the visual effects were astonishing...from the Elemental to the creation of the Golden Army, very diverse and very convincing.

^Pretty much agreed, visual effects, especially considering the budget, were pretty spectacular, and the art direction and set design were sublime, so there may be a possibility.

^He was superb in the movie, as he was in Blade II, he makes a great bad-guy and its a shame his career isnt a bit better at the moment.

HB2 should have a good chance of a make-up nomination, as well. The first one made it all the way to the top six, but lost out in the final "bake off" where the [usually] three films are selected.

It should at least make the last 3 this time, especially with Nuada/Nuala and Mr Wink, though not sure he qualifies as make up.

Wink should qualify at least as costume of some sort, since there was a man in there.

I think Hellboy 2 certainly has a chance of making the bakeoff. It's hard to say what the Academy looks for, but my top 5 pool of picks for Oscar noms would be...

- Hellboy 2
- Iron-man
- Mummy 3
- Cloverfield
- Prince Caspian

Hellboy should win something just because it relies so little on CGI, when other movies are drenched in it.

Should defintily be nominated for make-up, art direction, visual effects, and perhaps cosutme design

It definitely deserves something in the visual effects/ design area.

But hey... it's the Oscars here guys.

These aren't even legitimate awards when the films that actually deserve them never get anything.

Well, there's a person in 99% of the prosthetic characters in the film ... everything from Mr. Wink to the Angel of Death to the Fragglewump to the Silkard. beautiful work, and having seen it all up close I can tell you it is just as fantastic from a couple of feet away.

There are, oddly enough, only three places in the final choice, not five, like most other categories. Don't ask me why - the Oscars are weird like that. If there is any justice in this world, HBII should at least make it to the final three, and the CG work is, as has already been mentioned, judiciously used and beautifully done.

Set design is also one I would think has a good chance. The sets were GORGEOUS.

Hellboy 2 is among the final 7 contenders for Best Make-Up

“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
“The Dark Knight”
“Hellboy II: The Golden Army”
“The Reader”
“Synecdoche, New York”
“Tropic Thunder”
“The Wrestler”

Things are looking good.

Good stuff, against that competition, HBII SHOULD win, whether it does or not is another question though.

^It was also mentioned for its critical praise in Universal report of this record breaking year for them profit wise. This and the oscar nom will hopefully get it a bit more word of mouth for the DVD sales and its imminent release in Japan.

BTW, anyone know a web-site that shows international DVD sales?

The Make-up Bake off is less than a week away, so we should know soon...

So HELLBOY got ONE Oscar nomination - BEST MAKE-UP! Mike Elizalde and Thom Floutz have some stiff competition in BUTTON and KNIGHT, but I think they have a good chance of winning! Let's keep those fingers crossed!

I'm very very pleased about the nomination...a consolation price for the TDK snub.

Best Picture :csad:

TDK was overblown, over-budgeted and over-marketed. Christian Bale was more wooden than a pit-prop and the film was a top-heavy clumsy monster. Heath Ledger was its only saving grace, and his performance, while excellent, was not phenomenal. It is not a great film. It's fair, but not great, and certainly not up to a BEST FILM nomination.

I'm tickled to bits, although I have no idea why TDK is in there. BUTTON on the other hand is the one to watch. Old-age makeup is traditionally the most difficult, although BUTTON does use quite a bit of CG to compliment its makeup design.

Mike, Thom and all at Spectral deserve every kudos, for the work they did on HBII was stunning and original. BTW, Mike, Simon Webber, Doug Jones, David Marti and Montse Ribe (the latter two did the Oscar-winning makeup on PAN'S LABYRINTH) among others will be at the International Makeup Artists Trade Show in London on Saturday, doing an HBII Makeup panel. I will be there, and I will expect the reception from what will be a packed audience will be amazing, to say the least.
