The Force Awakens Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron

Apparently the novelization of TFA implies that Rey might be developing an attraction to Poe.

I wonder if they'll address that in the movies at all?

Their first meeting scene from the novelization.

“Artoo!” C-3PO’s tone was that of a proud relative complimenting a member of his family. “Artoo, you’ve done it!”
Cheers and spontaneous embraces filled the room with so much joy that no one paid any attention to who was hugging what representative of whichever species. Rey and Poe were not excluded, though their sudden, tight clinch of shared excitement led to a moment of mutual awkwardness.
“Uh, hi,” the pilot mumbled. “I’m Poe.”
She nodded slowly, searching his face and finding that she liked it. “I recognize the name. So you’re Poe. Poe Dameron, the X-wing pilot. I’m Rey.”
“I know.” He smiled back, a little more at ease. “Nice to meet you.”

I knew Poe would be great, hopefully he has a bigger role in the next episode!

Now, didn't Oscar Isaac play King John in the Ridley Scott Robin Hood film? I've been thinking about it all day, and I will admit that he did a good job in that film too. And oh wow, I never really paid much attention that he is to play Apocalypse. Hope he pulls him off.

Yeah, Oscar was pretty much the only good thing about that stupid Robin Hood movie.

I see all these theories on the net today that Poe is secretly a villain working for the First Order and that's how he escaped from Jakku. Um, if he was, I REALLY don't think he would have played a pivotal role in blowing up their primary weapon.

My hope for VIII is that it's mostly Poe and Finn being bros and going on adventures.
Heh, yeah. They had very little screen time together, but it was meaningful. Loved their reunion at the Resistance base. Felt like two old friends seeing each other after years apart. It made me think of this:

Has to. And hopefully a lot more interaction with the other main characters.

My favourite new character. The moment he appeared on screen I knew he would become the next Han in terms of fan fervour. Hopefully he gets more screentime in the next episodes.

That probably explains Poe disappearing after the crash and the quick line about what happened. Now I'm worried about his fate in the next film

I don't think they would have talked soo freely about it if they still had plans to kill him off early. Think he's here to stay.

Another great performance by Isaac, he made me love Poe almost instantly, and when we finally got to see him showing off his pilot skills in an X-Wing, wow, great stuff, loved his scenes with BB-8 as well.

I was instantly interested when the stormtrooper ships were flying in and he instinctively went into heroic mode without big cocky. Seemed like a leader when he ordered the old man inside for safety, shot at stormtroopers and then told BB-8 to escape to safety with the map like if he was a human friend.

He stood up to Kylo in a bit of cocky way without being over the top and then he befriended Finn right away without judging him much because he was with the first order.

Loved how he was so glad to see BB-8 and Finn later in such a happy mood but then got into heroic serious mood when it was time for business and he got the job done!

I don't think the initial arc of the character has too much bearing on what he will eventually become. Just as a television example, Jesse Pinkman was supposed to die in the first season of Breaking Bad, and look how that turned out. Creators saw Aaron Paul's talent and his chemistry with Bryan Cranston, so they kept him on and he became a tremendous character.

I'm sure the creators are very aware of how well-received Poe has been, coupled with the fact that Oscar Isaac was a hot commodity even before he got involved with Star Wars. I could see Poe having a huge role in VIII, maybe even IX.

He was great...better this time around in my second viewing. Still Rey is my most fave. :hrt:

I was thinking about this. This means, JJ Abrams changed his mind and turned Poe from a minor character to one of the leading characters after he met Oscar Isaac in that cafe in Paris. Doesn't it affect the whole storyline of the ST saga? From a minor role to one of the leads, is quite a big change. Unless, they haven't thought out stories for VIII and IX yet, at that point. I'm really curious about this. And unlike the original trio, Daisy-John-Oscar weren't auditioned/cast as one package. So I'm thinking they initially wanted to make it a duo lead, Rey and Finn only, instead of a trio. "Before the Awakening" tells about the trio, so I'm pretty convinced now that Poe is a part of the New Big Three. (I wasn't so sure before because he didn't join the promotions as much as Daisy and John, but now I know that's just because he had another film to shoot around that time)

Everybody keep saying he's the new Han Solo, but I think he plays a "Leia" role in the main trio dynamic. Luke and Han were nobodies, who knew nothing, getting involved in a big thing that Leia knows everything about. In this ST saga, Poe plays that role, he is the one who is directly involved in the main battle. But I guess, because we have Han to fill that part in this one, Poe didn't get to play his part much.

I really hope Poe does have a large fanbase. If not, I'm worried they might kill him in the next film, as initially planned, just for the sake of the dramatic effect.

Believe me, as dumb as that sounds that is far, far from the stupidest thing I've heard in reference to episode 7. It opening on a hand clutching a lightsaber, Luke going Darkside, Finn being Lando's son . But that Luke is Kylo Ren thing was just maddening. It's worse hearing people refer to Kylo Ren as Darth Vader.

How about Jar Jar secretly being Darth Plagueis. The theories were very convincing though.

I can say the same thing about Emily Bett Rickards aka Felicity Smoak being elevated to a regular in Season 2 after starting out as a very minor character. Problem is, she's getting really annoying now that I just wish she get killed off or something. :p

When A&E was making the Horatio Hornblower miniseries way back in the late 1990s, there was a character in the first film named Archie Kennedy. He was a mixture of characters from the books, basically an epileptic midshipman who befriends Horatio at the beginning of his career.

Archie was supposed to be gone after the first episode, but the producers were so taken with the performance by the actor, Jamie Bamber, and his friendship with Horatio that they wrote him back into the series and, yes, it drastically altered the trajectory of the story, but in a great way that really worked. In the books Horatio is a sullen, sort of withdrawn character who's a bit of a mystery, and having someone to talk to and bounce things off of in the show gave the viewers a way into the character. And Archie's personality, humorous and optimistic (despite hints of being very badly - maybe sexually - abused by an older jerk of a midshipman in the first film), was a great contrast to Ioan Gruffudd's more stoic, serious Horatio.

Did I mention that Jamie Bamber is also drop-dead gorgeous?

Unfortunately the C. S. Forester estate didn't like how having a best friend was changing Horatio's personality and, when A&E made a second series that included the immensely popular character, only agreed to his inclusion on the condition that he be killed off. Which the writers did, but they did it their way: Archie saves Horatio's life by "confessing" to pushing an insane captain down the hold of a ship, then dies of a battle injury before he can be hanged for the crime (which it's heavily implied Horatio committed.)

So yeah, sometimes studios do change their minds, and the result is a great thing!

Agreed, I pretty much liked him straight away, I loved him staring down Kylo when he is first captured and then saying "so how does this work? Do you talk first or?". Instant win!

As soon as he said that I knew he was going to be my favourite new character. :D What as Isaac did with Poe isn't easy to pull off, he made him genuinely heroic nice guy while also having bravado and a sense of humour.

Yep, instantly liked him from that moment. Although I think Finn ended up being my favourite character, I still loved the hell out of Poe. And Isaac played him awesomely.

That really isn't an easy thing to pull off at all.
