The Last Jedi Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron (VIII)

Shoehorned... his role in the second half of the film made perfect sense. He's the best pilot of the Resistance. Why wouldn't the best pilot of the Resistance lead the battle at Maz's castle and the assault on Starkiller base?

Yeah, and as far as presentation goes, without Poe the Resistance would've come off as very anonymous. He's very much their poster boy.

Which makes it pretty surprising that originally he wasn't going to be in the story at all any more after the TIE fighter crashes on Jakku.

When they cast this guy and saw him perform they knew hey had to change that plan!

Is that the new A-wing cockpit?
Maybe one of those red-earth skimmers?
Or an all new starfighter for Poe?

Yeah looks to me like one of the new speeders based on the pics of the toy for it over on RebelsScum.com

Oscar Isaac: “Poe is in some ways a surrogate son for Leia. But also I think she sees in him the potential for a truly great leader of the Resistance and beyond.” “Poe’s arc is one of evolving from a heroic soldier to a seasoned leader, to see beyond the single-mindedness of winning the battle to the larger picture of the future of the galaxy. I think Leia knows she won’t be around forever and she, with tough love, wants to push Poe to be more than the badass pilot, to temper his heroic impulses with wisdom and clarity.” “One of my favorite things that would happen from time to time on set would be when Carrie would sing old songs. Whenever that would happen I would offer her my hand and we would waltz around the set – on a starship, in a Rebel base, on an alien planet, and she would sing and we would dance. So surreal and beautiful to think about now. For all of her delicious, wicked humor and fiery energy she also had such sweet grace. I miss her dearly.” (August 10, 2017)

Well that description of them dancing, (although won't be in the movie) is just heartwarming.

I like how they are playing Poe and Leia off each other.
Poe didn't have many scenes with her in the TFA, it was more her and Rey.
It's interesting fan speculation (although wrong) imagined him as potentially the last surviving native son of Alderaan. Imagining her a surrogate matriarch and their bond very strong.
And although the Alderaan connection was not there, it's pretty much exactly how they are playing them now.

I still wonder what Poe can possibly say to get himself slapped?
If she's pushing him to be more, I wonder if Poe brings up her own son?
If so, that slap might be well deserved.
I just hope that's not what they end on for those two. :csad:

LOL gimmick!

Don't know how much this "booster" is a gimmick to clearly sell more X-Wings, or how much it actually plays into the film.
But Nerdherfer at reblescum seems to have spotted it in the actual film.

Looks like Poe takes that 'boosted' X-wing solo up against the new Dreadnought Destroyer:word:

His one line was a good one and delivered very well.

I really hope TLJ will elevate Poe into a character that feels more like part of the trinity of Rey-Finn-Poe, similar to Luke-Leia-Han. However, I thought TFA did a poor job making him relevant, as he seemed more like a plot device early on to get Finn defect from The First Order, and after he disappeared in the middle part of the movie, he resurfaced again to be the face of the Resistance fighters as they destroyed the new Death Star.

Overall, I can see why he was originally supposed to be killed off early in TFA, and if they want him to become more important, then this movie I feel will make-or-break him. If we have this conversation again in Episode 9 then I think they probably failed.

I'm gonna make one gripe and say, I wish they didn't dress him like ESB Han, but thats small beer as I think he also captures the spirit of Ford in that he's a true talent and an absolute scene stealer

I don't care if I get pilloried for this but...

I just have zero interest in Poe. I have not a ounce of concern for his arc. I far from hated Poe and the early interactions with Finn were great. But if I am honest they have to REALLY craft a great story of Poe interacting with Leia to make me really care for the character. As some have noted it does seem that as much as it was that they thought about how they could use Poe/Oscar in the future they also probably just felt a SW film "needed" to have a new trio at the center and... Eh. I think you could have had TFA as originally intended and little would really be lost.

Unfortunately, you're right. Poe Dameron is really the new Wedge Antilles.

The guy has been magic for me in his very limited scenes and with nothing to do. If they gave him a proper arc and some importance to the story I think he'd become a favourite.
