Oscar Nominees Who Got Robbed

Hey movies, whatever happened to you getting banned? Glad you're back btw.

Apocolaypse Now should have won Best Pic in 1980,not Kramer Vs. Kramer. I saw Dances With Wolves and can see why it won over Goodfellas at that time,Dances is more "viewer friendly" Not some old guy beating up his son over a letter he got from his school. (As great as that was to see)

Your thoughts on John Goodman's performance in Big Lewboski?

Never saw it. Billy Bob is a better actor than Goodman is,In A Simple Plan billy bob plays a guy who is slighly ******ed but he comes off so good and so conivicing, you don't realize he's acting,Morgan Freeman can do that too.

I kick major ass, people rallied behind getting me unbanned for whatever reason, and I was able to post another day as an Elitist Porcupine, sharing my obtrusive opinion with all who want it or don't want it :D, and thanks it's good to be back

I loved him in Sling Blade, he doesn't over-play his role, he simply is, that's what I liked about it. People seem to really bash on Hank's performance in Forrest Gump, I agree it's a bit hammy/over the top at times but it had a lot of charm.

Don't go up to to bat, if you don't intend to swing.

Sometimes, I find statements such as the statement I didn't fully "swing" at to be so idiotic that I struggle to take it seriously enough to the point where I actually go in and argue against it. It was an incredibly ignorant statement, IMO, and I briefly commented with my feelings. Now had the comment he made been in regards to Denzel's performance and how he felt it wasn't up to snuff for one reason or another, then whatever, we'll dance. But it wasn't.

I post however I feel like posting in whatever situation I place myself in. If I feel like making my thoughts on a statement known briefly and without leaving any doors open, then so be it. If I feel like "putting some thought into it", then I will. But I find it difficult to put thought into an argument when thought wasn't put into the original statement.

I thought Hanks did a great job with Forest Gump,No One else could have played that character but Hanks.

True I'll give you that, I apologize for being obtrusive, but I just hate when people will start bickering with "No I'm right" "NO I'M RIGHT", I think flame wars are cool, when there thought propelling them. But there is a shred of truth for it as I posted before, it's a shame that black actors are pigeon holed by the fact that the only good roles they get are center around them being black. Oh and let's not add to the fact that movies that are cater to blacks have the IQ of a soap dish and are more overtly racist than things that are hailed agianst such as "Song of the South".

Well, that's the thing: many black actors play characters that are written to be black because that's what these producers are looking for. But the same can be said for all races, really. It's just that truly great black characters are a dime a dozen because many writers out there aren't writing great black characters. It's a mere handful.

There are so many talented black actors and actresses out here working right now, it's not even funny. The only way this issue will be put to rest (which I believe it never will) is if Hollywood starts recognizing the talent out there and begins making more films with black leads.

That's why I'm praying that Dreamgirls is big. It has the potential to go a long way to killing this thing.

Well, if you're referring to the likes of "Soul Plane" or "The Cookout", then well, yeah. :o

Wel here's my opinion, I believe the way to solve it is simple, is by not writing black characters but just writing stories and getting the best person for hte job, when black actors start playing character that aren't written specifically for black actors. And I think the problem is where all a little racist, but we don't admit to it, we hide behind Political Correctness. For example when I write, a black character never enters my scripts, never enters my conscienceness, unless I was to specifically write a black character, and I partially attribute that to all black actors I see on the screen are playing black characters, so hopefully in the future... People of all races asians, hispanics, blacks, who ever can just get roles that aren't tailor to there race but there skills as an actor /soap box... :D

P.S. Beyonce sucks as an actress, so I won't be seeing Dreamgirls :(

Lets face it Ian McKellen Got Robbed bad that year he was up for Gandalf for Fellowship Of The Rings. He won the golden globe and the Screen Actos Guild Award but got robbed for the Oscar.

Peter Jacksons King Kong should have been nominated and won that year. I am most upset though that Batman Begins did not get nominasted for best Picture for it was the best pictue last year.

I am kinda mad that Johnny Depp did not win for Jack Sparrow for that is one of the greatest Characters ever.

Also looking back on it Star Wars A New Hope Got robbed back in the day. Its too bad Star Wars especially Empire never one the big prize.

*ding, ding, ding, ding*

The problem is, when many writers sit down to write a script unless they go out and say to themselves "Character B is going to be black/asian/arab and he's going to do, yatta yatta", then 99% of the time, the character is going to be white because it's almost like you're conditioned to think that white is somehow "the normal, safe race" in regards to writing film characters.

Hey, don't knock it just yet. :p

I've heard a lot of legit Oscar buzz for the film. We'll see if that translates to a decent flick later...

So true :( And also add to the fact that on both sides of the fence, it's now become a black character is different than a white character in the sense, that every black person supposely carries around a ton of pride for his heritage, and that he's a member to the black culture club, this type of thinking is ingrain in the youth as well. I've seen black kids in my highschool(well I'm going to college this year so hopefully this changes) argue that someone isn't "black" because they were raised in either a white family or that black family has money. How ****ed up is that? It's like black culture is center around being in poverty, I don't know, i just think the whole system is ****ed up and anytime someone tries to tamper with it, there pegged as a racist, wehn peopel should open up and share ideas, I think ignorance is half the problem on boht sides, and htat includes myself included. I see only what I can see on BET and what not.

You do know why they didn't win or weren't nominated right?
Because the Academy is made up of crotchity old men and women who believe that Sci-fi and fantasy are not worthy of a great prize.

But guess who's in the next generation of the Academy members? The people who created these Sci-Fi and fantasy masterpieces.
The only members of the Academy that have prominant roles in Hollywood are Tom Hanks, Ed Bagley Jr., Michael Mann and Kathy Bates.
The rest are just producers who work behind the scenes.

We'll see I like Jamie Foxx, I believe he's in it right?

To my earlier comment aobut movies cater toward the black community, there are some that are solid movies, Barber Shop would be one of them. I didn't see the sequels and waht not, but I thought the first was a good movie with heart.

Well, in high school I went through this phase where I was really into rock. And of course I was heckled and essentially looked down upon by the "real black people". Actually, that may also have been because I was light skinned (but that's another issue all together, and no neither of my parents are white).

Oddly, enough I've grown out of the rock phase and I'm more into alternative hip hop, along with a lot of pop and funk kinda stuff.

....But back to the topic (:p Damn you Movies):

I can't really think of too many rob jobs off the top of my head right now. Maybe Saving Private Ryan losing Best Picture, but I did like Shakespeare in Love, and yet the former is one of my all-time favorites and a Top 5 Spielberg flick.

As well as Eddie Murphy.

Barber Shop's a good one. Can't ignore Boyz n' the Hood, Friday (which is probably best looked at in the context of its release really), Antwone Fisher, Do the Right Thing, and Malcolm X to name a few.

Do the Right Thing is great, I need to see Malcom X and Boyz n' the Hood since I'm a fan of both Spike Lee and John Singleton. But I'm really interested in seeing Bamboozled but I hear it can get pretencious at times.

P.S. Cmil, your a cool guy  I'm just an elitist ass on these boards, as many of my SHH! Friends like Gammy or Carmine can attest to :D

The Color Purple not winning any oscars is one of the biggest injustices in history in my opnion.

Its also crazy that people like like Peter O'Toole and Martin Scorsese have never won (honorary doesn't really count).

Mgiht as well add Robert Altman, Hitchcock, Sydney Lumet, and Blake Edwards to that roll call :(

Well on the topic of roles for black actors, Morgan Freeman seems to be able to get roles that weren't written for black characters, in the novels of both Shawshank Redemption and Dreamcatcher the characters he played in the films were white. No I suppose they may have written them for the screen with the idea of getting a black character to play the part, but I dunno.

Well Altman still has a chance.

The color purple was indeed robbed at the oscars, I laughed at the idea of Oprah being an actress beforehand, but once I saw it, boy can that woman act! She's the character I felt and cared for the most. Hugely surprised
