Can't wait to see Hunnam in what I'm hoping to be his big break into Hollywood. I need to see him in a straight up heroic role.

The posture and the basic "anatomy" (broad shoulders, long arms, small waist, hunched-over, etc.) of the Jaeger kind of reminds me of an Eva Unit from Evangelion. The overall design of the robot seems to look like a larger version of the Jaeger pilot suit.

And, if you look at the gallery on the website where that picture came from, you can see a diagram showcasing the different fighting styles that we will probably be seeing (Greco-Roman/Sumo Wrestling, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, etc.). :woot:

This movie is going to be boss!

I don't see the EVA comparison at all. Eva units don't have those chunky arms and legs. These almost look like Robotic bodybuilders. Plus they those thick heads without really any neck.

Sure, it doesn't look like an Eva unit, but the proportions are somewhat similar (The long arms, really broad shoulders, small waist, slightly hunched-over stature, etc.)

Heck, I would even go as far as to say that, appearance-wise, it has "fins" (not exact) on its shoulders and a "core" on its chest like an Eva.

A bit of a stretch? Probably. But, with someone like Del Toro working on this, you never know.

Yeah again, EVA units have really long SKINNY arms and legs. These do not. These are not wiry and gangly looking figures at all which is what EVA units looked like.

A lot of mecha have cores in their chest. EVA didn't pioneer that.

I think you're taking what I said a bit too literally.

I was just making a fun little observation about the how I thought the Jaeger's general (not exact) proportions seemed reminiscent of an Eva. But then you had to take the fun out of it by going into particulars about why "Exhibit A" isn't exactly like "Exhibit B" because certain things don't match up exactly.

Total buzzkill, man.

Sorry man, I think they don't match-up well at all.

These look like chunky bodybuilder mechas.

Have we gotten any clues on what the monsters look like?

Yes we have xmaniax:

Comic-Con descriptions suggested there was a kaiju that looks like a hammerhead shark.

Biden's smirk and stifled laughter have become the new viral gif response.

Its far more in line with del toro's other movies and sketches than anything from evangellion.

Will people ever admit that Evangellion did not originate the vast majority of its elements?

Anyone catch del Toro on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia? On bath salts screaming about eating babies, he apparently wrote his own lines.

I was just making a simple observation, nothing more. Ir probably is just a coincidence, but at this point and juncture, it's still interesting to speculate.

And with the basic premise of the film being pilots using a neural link to mentally interface with giant robots to fight giant monsters (Evangelion), it's hard not to make comparisons.

I tried getting into Evangelion, just couldn't. Watched like 3 episodes and just couldn't keep going. Only anime seres I was ever able to get into hardcore was Death Note

I'll admit, it's one of those series that is very divisive among the anime fandom. You either love it or hate it. Me personally, I absolutely love the series, but only because I have a really good understanding of it from doing my own research on it's background and what thought went into it, and not following the absolutely absurd fan theories which permeate the internet. :woot:

If I may suggest, try the Rebuild of Evangelion movies. They're more easily accessible than the original series. Both Evangelion 1.11 and 2.22 have been available in the states for some time.

Evangelion 1.11 is a pretty straightforward adaptation of episodes 1-6, with some changes here and there. While there is still proper character development, it "trims the fat" per se (for movie-length purposes), so it doesn't dawdle and moves at a brisker pace while still getting across everything it needs to. It's right at the very end when the story starts to go in a slightly different direction than the original series. It's like 95% original series, 5% new material.

Evangelion 2.22, however, is almost the exact opposite. With the exception of some similar situations, character developments and plot points, it's almost an entirely different take on the Evangelion story. They even introduce a new character (though, at this point in the story, it's kind of hard to say how important her role is). I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say that by the end of the movie, you do kind of gain a new respect for Shinji Ikari.

There are supposed to be two more films, with Evangelion 3.0 being released in Japan on November 17th this year and Evangelion: Final being released sometime next year. However, considering how long it takes to license anime like this, we probably won't get them here in the states until probably 2014 or so.

Sorry, your comment wasn't really the driving force behind my response. While comparisons are certainly valid there are a ton of evangellion complaining that this film is outright ripping it off.

Is Pacific Rim going to have a toyline?
