Pacific Rim

The movie's about giant robots fighting giant monsters.

So, maybe.

The only thing Evangelion really brought to the table, in my opinion, were: 1. dramatic angst, 2. religious and supernatural mumbo-jumbo that was hard as heck to follow.

Oh, and
*********ing to comatose chicks
. There was that too.

That said, if Del Toro weren't channeling some aspects of Evangelion I'd be surprised...it's probably the most famous here in the West right after the various Gundam series.

Struzan made mosters for Del Toro's last 3 films, though they were never widely used.

With Struzan out of retirement could he possibly make one for Pacific Rim? It would awesome.

Considering that The Wolverine has a hand-drawn teaser poster, I don't see why this movie can't have one as well.

^ While stylized I don't think that wolverine poster is actually made by hand.

Well, basically, I was trying to say that it deviated from the norm and wasn't photoshopped to death like the majority of movie posters nowadays.

I mean as far as teaser posters, the one we got was a painting or whatever, that big mech shoulder pic from comicon. I just hope they put out better posters than they did for TDKR.

Not till the Hobbit comes out so another 5 weeks to go.

Will we get the trailer before any shots of the jaegers or kaijus? :( I want pics damnit!

Has it been confirmed the trailer is coming out with The Hobbit? I know Del Toro said around December back in the summer. Either way, incredibly excited!

Actually, according to the creator, a lot of the religious symbolism used in the series was just placed there just to look cool and wasn't supposed to mean anything. And it's funny that you mention how it became popular in the West, because if the creator had known that, he wouldn't have put it into the series in the first place. :woot:

As far as the story and plot not making any sense, it's actually pretty straightforward if you know your stuff and do a little research:

So excited! :D

Wait, Perlman's also going to be in this? Hunnam and Perlman?

What, is Katey Segal going to wander in and start a ***** fight with the asian girl? :oldrazz:

Hopefully the "Dragonzord" makes an appearance

I was over at imdb and someone made the good point that the claw on the sign could be part of a kaiju warning system.

Bah, it shouldn't need explained. It's like with Chrono Cross (the video game equivalent...well, actually, the video game equivalent is Xenogears, but you know what I mean)--it shouldn't be so convoluted in the first place.

Thanks for the links, though, now I can finally understand the mystery.

Part of the reason it seems so "convoluted" in the first place is that so many people have come up with varying theories about what a lot of the stuff in the series actually means (the various "Christian symbolism" which actually doesn't mean anything; the creator of the series even said so himself) that people have become so confused and turned off, instead of looking into the original intended meaning. Also, I think the cultural divide between the US and Japan is also a factor, because there are certain things that Japanese people may immediately understand which would be lost on other countries, including America.

And I disagree to an extent about all things not needing to be explained on first watch. I think certain films, which don't quite make sense at first, can be very rewarding once you dig a little deeper and do research on your own to make sense of it. Some filmmakers actually do this on purpose.

Does that make them convoluted? It depends. Some overly complicated films tend to be just pretentious garbage, but I think some of them genuinely have some underlying messages and themes to convey.

Not all things have to be cut and dry. If they were, the world would be quite a boring place.

Guillermo del Toro Talks RISE OF THE GUARDIANS, PUSS IN BOOTS 2, KUNG FU PANDA 3, TROLLHUNTERS, PACIFIC RIM, PAC RIM 2, and More

Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub said:
I’ve gotta ask, when are we all going to see the Pacific Rim trailer?

DEL TORO: It’s about five weeks from hitting theaters, so around mid-December.

So you’re gonna be on The Hobbit?

DEL TORO: You know we’re gonna be attached to, I think, a big movie, but I have no confirmation of that yet.

Were you involved in cutting the trailer for Pacific Rim or is it something that the marketing department presents to you and you give it the go-ahead?

DEL TORO: No, no, they bring it to me and then I do a little pass myself, I help with the sound design, then we re-cut it again, and then I’m involved in the timing of the color and the mixing of the sound, so whatever you saw in San Diego or New York, I was completely part of the process.

One of the things that’s really tough with a visual effects-heavy movie and trailers is that you often don’t have the finished shots until a month or two before release. Do you have any finished shots in the trailer or is this all like 95% stuff?

DEL TORO: We have a couple of finished shots, but most of the stuff is being finished for the trailer.

So this is stuff that you’ll be very, very happy to show.

DEL TORO: Yeah, oh no absolutely. If it goes public, it has to be I’m very, very happy to show off what we’ll show in December.

I know that you have a close relationship with Thomas Tull at Legendary. I’m curious, how much is he pulling at you to say, ‘Hey, if Pacific Rim does the business we’re expecting it to do, we really want you to do the sequel,’ and how much is it like, ‘I have 10 other things that I’m thinking about doing, what the hell am I gonna do next?’

DEL TORO: A little bit of both. We certainly started tossing ideas for possibilities of a sequel and Travis Beacham and I are writing a proposal of ideas, but at the same time I know I don’t want to do that next. I want to do something else, I want to do something in a different genre that’s not so big. So I don’t know yet what it’s gonna be, but I know that next year I’m delivering Pacific Rim in July and then I’m doing—God willing—the voice shooting for Pinocchio and then the pilot for The Strain for FX.

Cant wait for the trailer, cant wait for The Strain either, loved the book, I would hope he wouldnt go straight into a sequel anyway, dont rush, let it gestate and come up with the best script possible.

Also I hope he does Hellboy 3 before he moves onto a potential PR2.

We need new IPs. We need new franchises! Thank you Del Toro

All robots need a giant codpiece. They pack like that.
