Kickass looking pilot suit? CHECK.

How did I only just hear about this? It sounds awesome.

Looks different from anything I was expecting. But still pretty cool.

When this flick comes out, I'll be waiting for someone to create an amv on Youtube with this song and scenes from it.

this could be awsome giant robots vs monsters reminding me of voltron and robotech

Its reminiscent of several anime with mech's (Gundam, Evangelion, Macross). Loving the sound of this.

Since that site is blocked, here's the quotes:

Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim is all about scale. He is bringing his kaiju (strange beasts) monsters to the big screen, to do battle against giant robots. For authenticity he went as far as building streets that could vibrate, to give off the effect of a large creature stepping on the surface. And if these creatures are anything like the Kaiju mythology than we can expect one to be reptilian, another to have a crustacean look to it, and another could fly.

When working on a film of this scale you better make sure you have the right guys helping you, and Guillermo thinks he has done just that.

"I went for raw power and beauty. I only hired guys who are absolute monster fans and robot fans.

How about those robots?

The robots are real machines rather than movie machines - gorgeous and functional at the same time. Each of the robots, when they step in, has their own personality. One has a huge spiky mace made of iron, and another has a giant battleaxe. You don't go, 'I wonder what his fighting style is?' You immediately understand what his fight style is!

Guillermo actually went to his official fansite and clarified that quote about the spiky mace and giant battleaxe. He says, "Alas, the battle axe and spiked mace are misplaced quotes (my damn accent, I'm sure) I wont clear more for fear of spoilers- but the weapons are both melee and ammo. Anyway- The "cutlery" we have is pretty cool."

Where will the battles take place?

"We had a Tokyo scene that we shot here in Toronto. We had several Hong Kong scenes and a few scenes in Australia, through the television. We briefly see the kaiju take over San Francisco. The whole Pacific Rim needs a sense of danger."

"We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view."

And here's a behind the scenes pic. Notice that Rinko has purple streaks in her hair. Very anime.

This sounds really really awesome.
I have been wanting a Robotech movie for years and this might just be as close as we're gonna get for the moment.

Very nice! And one particular quote caught my eye:

In Earth's atmosphere??? So we'll also see some flying mechs as well??? :wow:

Whenever I see that bobbed hairstyle, I always think back to Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I hope we get a trailer soon, it all sounds amazing and I'm not even a big anime/mech fan.

Yeah, me neither. I watched some Gundam as a kid, but I was never into anime or really any of that stuff. But this has caught my interest. Hopefully it does the same for the GA.

I'm in the same boat, never really been a fan of mechs. The idea of them duking it out with monsters from the bottom of the ocean is epic enough to get excited for though, that, the cast and Guillermo. I'm sure Pacific Rim is going to be huge next year, one of the 'event' films of summer '13.

I wonder if it's gonna be more Speed Racer or Matrix in terms of live action anime.

With Del Toro I'm inclined to say Matirx but I enjoyed Racer, so I'm fine with either.

HOLD THE PHONE!!!

I thought this was a WWII movie for some reason based on the name...I had no idea it was sci-fi. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!

OMG... All of that sounds so grand. :wow: Easily my most anticipated movie next year now.

Well this is live action, so I think that alone will be a big factor. Also, I think anime has some sensibilities that doesn't jive with some people. Usually the character moments are done in broad strokes while the story itself is the main focus. Or the heavy reliance on cliche archetypes (the stoic main character, the a-sexual nerd boy who is beloved by women but is oblivious to it, quirky and bubbly Japanese girl).

I think that's why Cowboy Bebop with its Western influences made it appealing to most. It broke away from the typical Anime troupes.

Pacific Rim and Man of Steel are easily my most anticipated for next year, but jeez... Pacific Rim might have jumped up a few notches now. :wow:

2013 is going to be a stellar year for Sci-Fi fans.

Yeah, I'm just not a fan of the artwork, style and animation of it all. Not to mention the over the top emotions they express which annoys the hell out of me. When they're dubbed, it just tries to be more serious than it actually is and it's laughable to me.

I'd have to check out Cowboy Bebop though since I've heard about it over the years.

The problem with certain dubs is that the English translation tries to match up with the sync. So for an English/American sentence that could last up to 4 words, in Japanese it could be 10 characters/words. So what ends up happening is that, some of the English dialog sounds run-on and contrived to compensate for the missing words. So nothing sounds natural.

That being said, I've always stated that Studio Ghibli is in it's own class and should be watched.
