Penny Dreadful

The only thing I can't figure out is why they left Vanessa alone in that house at the end. What if some evil entity came back for her?

That bugged me too! :funny: Well, I suppose Lyle will visit her every now and then so technically, Ethan is really the only one who left (WHY ETHAN WHHHYYYY) "permanently". I mean, Malcolm will surely come back after bringing Sembene's body back to Africa and Viktor is still there albeit high on drugs. Caliban doesn't know much about Vanessa's troubles so he doesn't count. Plus, he did ask her to come with him after all.

Yes. I totally agree with your post, Kvz5 :) I couldn't have said it any better than you :)

@Kvz5
Well put, man with the best avatar ever, well put. :woot:

She is one of the best written female character I've seen in a long time. She feels like a real character. A very strong one at that.

:highfive:

(I was looking for an Eva Green GIF where she's nodding her head in agreement or something and I couldn't find any. What's up with that???)

@DarknessOfDeath
I love your avatar as well. :woot:

Aww thanks man. Yours is cool too. :)

Indeed. That's not just very odd, but also completely unacceptable. :woot:

Thanks! :woot:

Oh, and I kinda felt a need to post this here:

Though I do like Dubliners' version as well:

By the way, I'll have to get my hands on season 2 soundtrack from Penny Dreadful. I already have one from first season.

I have the soundtrack for the first season too :)

:highfive:

I think that "Mina", "Let Me Die" and "I Was Never Going To Go To Africa" are my favorite pieces. I tend to play entire soundtrack when working on something on my computer. And I like how Korzeniowski tends to repeat that same little leitmotif from the opening credit with slight variations, with either violin or piano, in many songs.

Sometimes when I like a certain track, I can't help but listen to it over and over ...I'll check that one out.

I love the opening credits :) What other tracks do you recommend?

"Demimonde?" I love the piano version. :woot:

"Everyone Likes Oranges" is a great one, as Roose Bolton have said.

"Street, Horse, Smell & Candle" is an interesting piece, a bit more cheerful and different than most others (it is when Proteus goes out for the first time). "Back Hand of God" is a simple piano one and I am quite fond of "Closer Than Sisters". As for the darker pieces, "Transgression" and "Secret Room" are probably the best to me. I prefer "Transgression" though. Very intense.

Funny how I thought I never be able to join in the discussions here when I was trying to find a way to watch Penny Dreadful...I feel lucky to be a part of this thread :)

Very cool man...I'll try to give the full soundtrack a listen.

Definitely do so. At least let it play as background music when you work on something that doesn't require your full attention for the first time, songs that do catch your ear will differentiate themselves from the bunch. It worked for me, at least. :woot:

I enjoy being here as well. In truth, I never expected to join a thread outside of sub-forum I usually frequent, as I am not really active in the other parts of this forum. It comes as a rather refreshing change actually.

Yeah, I can tell by your avatar. :woot:

I love her as well.

I still think the pilot is terribly mediocre. If not for Eva, I probably would have given up. Thankfully, the released the second episode ondemand the same night as the debut. Now it is probably my favorite show on television. Especially after GoT just died on me this season.

Yeah Im not sure if Im going to watch GoT season 5...I tried watching the first ep but I fell asleep. So I picked Penny Dreadful over it. Good choice probably..lol.

Did anyone else laugh when the detective layed the extradition papers in front of Ethan? He walked in that office and was acting like a man walking to the gallows at peace and almost welcoming his fate and he confesses and makes a death bed request and then wham! Extradition, *****! The look on his face.:funny: Could have been in bed with Vaness, dumbass.

I didn't laugh, but I definitely how a Charlie Brown like expression on my face. :funny:

At first i wasn't very into the pilot, but over time i have come to apreciate it a lot. It's sort of a sneak peek into all these mysteries and plays very differently from every other Pilot episode of a show, while most usualy introduce the characters, PD's pilot barely does so, by the end, everyone's still pretty much a stranger to us. I think it makes later episodes more fulfilling when we start seeing these characters getting so much depth

My problem with it is presentation, tone and character. They play it very generic and even more so with the characters. That the second episode gets it so much more right is a failure of the pilot imo.

I also think this might be a situation where the original pilot was pushed back, so they were forced to go from a well informed opening, to something far more vague.

Group hug! :ilv: I love the discussions and the posters at this thread too. I've been hanging out here more than I thought I would. :D

I don't remember much about the earlier episodes but I remember that a number of eps were available on OnDemand and I marathoned them so there was never really a "first" or "second" episode for me. That happened with The Affair too. It was such a slow burner that I wouldn't have stayed with it if I didn't do a marathon. But anyway, yeah, PD has become my favorite show on TV right now.

I call it karma. :D I'm more surprised that he wanted to die. Sembene sacrificed his life because Ethan's ~important~ and he just wants to throw that away? WTF DUDE. Did he think his job is done when he killed Kali?

Speaking of Sembene, I was thinking how Lyle could've easily taken his place in that scene with Ethan. Would you guys feel more or less sad if it was Lyle instead? I honestly don't know since I LOVE both characters. I was more afraid for Lyle though because I thought Sembene would be safe. :argh:

I just finished the second season and it was LIGHT YEARS better than the first. The first had great acting and atmosphere but NOTHING HAPPENED. It was so mind bogglingly slow I couldn't take.

I'm so thankful that the same can not be said about the second season. The characters actually interacted and all the storylines joined together. Also the plot moved along and there were several points of action; and even a little levity. The other main improvement was actually letting us see the villains' point of view. That was severely lacking in the first season, which was basically "Vanessa and Her Amazing Friends Hanging Around a Mansion".

Now how do they make season 3 even better? One word: Dracula. They teased his presence pretty heavily (the brother of Lucifer destined to live forever on Earth and feed on mortals in the night) now it's time to deliver!

Guilt. Ethan is dealing with massive guilt and he doesn't know how to handle it. I think when we learn more about his relationship with his father, it will become more clear.
