Gigantic news this evening as IESB has reported that Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes) will helm Dimension's remake of Piranha. Chuck Russell, who wrote the screenplay, was originally attached to direct. More news as it comes in, watch for an official announcement soon! Piranha was a Jaws spoof directed by Joe Dante and produced by Roger Corman in 1978. Universal Studios tried to stop the film from being released (because of its satirizing of Universal's Jaws films), but Steven Spielberg saw the film in advance and liked it. There was a sequel - Piranha II: The Spawning, which was the directorial debut of one James Cameron.

It's the Second story down.

I've never seen Piranha. But i liked the Hills Have Eyes Remake. So it should be interesting to see this.

Pirahna is a corman movie, so its awesomely bad

but Aja is pretty cool, huge fan of the first Hills remake

Yeah i know all of Cormans films are cheesy. He's the one that made the FF movie in 94 that no one was ever suppose to see and that was godawful but funny at how horrible it was.

Aja Confirmed to Take on Piranha
Source: Variety
March 15, 2007

Variety has confirmed IESB.net's scoop that Dimension Films has hired French filmmaker Alexandre Aja to direct a remake of Piranha, Joe Dante's 1978 dark parody of Steven Spielberg's Jaws that was followed by a sequel from James Cameron.

Atmosphere's Mark Canton (300), IPW's Marc Toberoff and Gregory Levasseur are producing the stylized horror-comedy. Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg wrote the script, with Aja planning a rewrite.

Aja says he wants to pay homage to all the "creature films that made me fall in love with the genre."

The updated story takes place at Lake Havasu, Ariz., a favorite destination for partying spring breakers. When a tremor causes the ground to open up beneath the lake, chaos and terror break out as ravenous piranhas are released.

"We will maintain the fun and thrilling aspects of the original film but look forward to upping the ante with a modern-day twist," Dimension's Bob Weinstein said.

Aja was last in theaters with horror-thriller The Hills Have Eyes and is in pre-production with New Regency's Mirrors.

Looking forward to this, only because of Alexandre Aja is making it.

There's making another Piranha remake?

One thing that Aja wanted to make clear was that both MIRRORS and PIRANHA aren’t remakes. “We are writing PIRANHA now. You read everywhere that it’s a remake, but MIRRORS is completely not a remake at all,” he tells B-D, “HILLS was really a remake [while] MIRRORS is really a new story based on the original. PIRANHA is not a remake at all either - we were asked by Weinstein Company to think about a new PIRANHA movie, not a remake to the original.” He concludes by clarifying, “It’s not a remake of all the James Cameron movies – it’s only about the same kind of fish.”

One ting that we found concerning is that “sea monster” movies don’t appear to be doing very well, we asked him what makes this different from films like PRIMEVAL and ROGUE. He explains that his is going to be one hell of a ride, “My idea of the writing right now is to approach the project as if I was building a rollercoaster. It’s a complete differ approach than HILLS or P2; it’s like building an attraction,” he continues, “It’s going to be scary and great- it’s a very different approach from anything we’ve done before.”

Lastly Aja confirms that he’s still attached to BLACK HOLE, “I’m still attached to BLACK HOLE – it’s the best graphic novel I have ever read,” he exclaims with loads of excitement and energy.

EXCL: Aja's Piranha Has a Gremlins Feel

ShockTillYouDrop.com just got off the phone with French director Alexandre Aja who is out making the press rounds talking about this week's DVD and Blu-Ray release of Mirrors, the supernatural thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland. His upcoming Piranha 3D swam to the forefront of our conversation and Aja assures us that he will begin shooting the remake of Joe Dante's film this year after a slight production push from last fall.

"We're definitely shooting in 2009," he says. "I don't know about the release date, it's difficult to tell but at the end of the day, we have to do what's best for the movie. It would have been insane to have shot the film this winter on the water."

Aja reminded us that he's still aiming for a spring principal photography start and even extended an invite to Shock to visit the set (you listening, Dimension Films?). One aspect of the film that is getting him excited is the 3-D. The production is using the same system David Ellis called upon for the upcoming Final Destination: Death Trip 3D.

"I'm finishing storyboards now and using the time to improve the script to get the best action and story gags as possible," adds Aja. Asked to explain the concept art revealed at the AFM in November, he says, "That's one of the concepts. There are many because, visually, they'll be different. Like Gremlins not all of the piranha will be the same."

So Aja will be drawing inspiration from Dante in more ways than one. We'll keep you posted on the progress of Piranha 3D!

Kinda bummed it won't be on til next year.

I guess a trailer wil ltide me over.

I cannot wait for this movie :oldrazz: its going to be so friggin awesome!!!!

The 3D sounds like a plus in regards to this one. Kind of brings back the Jaws 3D memories for me.

Dreyfuss and Rhames Joining Piranha 3D

ShockTillYouDrop.com reports that Richard Dreyfuss will be making a cameo appearance in Dimension Films' Piranha 3D. The New York Post's "Page Six" is also reporting that Ving Rhames is set to join Elisabeth Shue and Adam Scott in the film.

Director Alexandre Aja starts shooting the horror-thriller next month in Arizona for a March 19, 2010 release.

In the update, a tremor causes Arizona's Lake Havasu floor to open, setting free scores of prehistoric piranhas.

I loved the original. Can't wait for this.

Is it true that James Cameron got banned from the studio where they made Piranha 2, because he was sneaking into the editing room and working on his own "superior cut" of the movie? :D

Yeah, it's true. :hehe:

Cameron was fired from the film after eight days of shooting and wasn't allowed to view any of the footage he shot, so he snuck into the editing room and cut his own version of the film.

He talks about it in this interview. (Around the 6:30 mark)

He denies the story of course... ;)

I wish Alexandre Aja would stop making movies. :csad:

I wish he would return to do something original again.

Hahah, that's awesome. :D

Lots of known actors have signed up for this film. I might check it out. If it's very gory, we just might get a real deadpool! Anybody want to place their bets?

I don't see how a remake of a crappy Jaws spoof is supposed to make a Deadpool movie more likely.

I hope that the Piranha remake will feature a version of the little mutant lab creature from the original that was stop-motion animated by Phil Tippet.
