Why? The Pirates movies aren't what I'd call horrible, unwatchable movies.

The second one was probably one of the best summer movie experiences in quite a while.

a la 2 1/2 hr trailer for the 3rd one.:o

I don't know why people can't differentiate their preferences from reality.

Spidey is very popular, but family audiences go see a film several times in theaters. Shrek basically steals from every popular tale, so it's immediately a mainstream favorite.

Spidey will have a hell of a first week and the second will be strong too. The telltale signs will come when Shrek opens during that third week.

Pirates opens on the following week and has positioned itself to screw Shrek just like the 2nd version screwed SR. I just don't think that it will work w/ Shrek, because people are always looking for films that the whole family can watch. Shrek: ages 5 or 6 to 70's, 80's.

I don't think that Spidey or POTC have that kind of age group. I'm not saying that either don't have a shot as the 07 box office champs, but I don't see these films beating any 1st, 2nd, or 3rd weekend records. Just my op.

This is going sound trollish but I apologize, I have yet to see Pirates of Carribean, but real life buzz has been luke-warm and mediocre, most people were disappointed, I'm sensing Matrix Reloaded/Revolution numbers here, where as Spider-Man 2 was a big improvement over the luke-warm first entry. I think Spidey 3 going win.

I don't think you should compare the Pirates sequel with the Matrix b/c the Matrix Reloaded started of well but ruined the entire franchise with one scene: 'The Architect' and they released both films in one year! Pirates ended of well and with a surprise twist which made me want to see the next film which I will be seeing! Back on topic though, I think Spiderman might be slightly stronger at the BO b/c we haven't seen Spidey in a while and I think there were more people that were disappointed with POTC 2 than POTC 1 so it might lose some numbers b/c of that!

Pirates 3. Six reasons.

  • Jack Sparrow
  • Davy Jones
  • Barbossa
  • Jack Sparrow vs. Barbossa vs. Davy Jones
  • Still fresh in people's minds
  • A bloody kick-ass cliffhanger that needs clearing

But of course, they apply to Spidey 3, too.

  • Spider-Man
  • Venom
  • Sandman
  • Battle royale
  • Been around for decades
  • A bloody kick-ass cliffhanger that needs clearing

:rolleyes: I'm still going with Pirates 3.

May 1, 2007
* Spider-Man 3
* No Reservations

May 8, 2007
* 28 Weeks Later

May 15, 2007
* Shrek the Third
* 1408

May 22, 2007
* Pirates of the Caribbean 3

Spidey 3 has two weeks clear. Shrek 3 will probably take the top spot since it appeals to most ages. Pirates 3 has four weeks clear until Fantastic Four 2 comes out. IMO, Pirates 3 might just take the cake.

I'm looking forward to both films. I think it will be close. A lot of people thought that Superman Returns would blow POTC 2 out of the water (pun intended), but in actuality, SR was a poorly written story which really underperformed at the box office, and people gravitated to POTC 2 because it had more of an epic fun feel and not as boring as SR.

Granted, the Spiderman films have been much better done than SR was, but right now I'd say that to the mainstream public, POTC 3 has the advantage with the momentum in its favor.

Um.. Matrix was ment to be a single film, making it a trilogy ruined it. Pirates 2 was amazing!!!

Well Spiderman 3 has two amazing iflms to follow, whereas POTC3 has a good film, then a ****ey film to follow, I don't see it outselling SPidey or being better in any way. I ahte the way people love POTC2 just because it's got hjohnny depp in and it's POTC, It's one of the worst films i've seen in the cinema this year, if Spiderman 3 doesn't do better in every way than POTC3, then all hope is lost

Shrek3 will win the boxoffice race but I think that Pirates 3 will be number two with 355mil while SM3 will make 340mil. I want Spidey to win but it ain't gonna happen.

Or maybe... just maybe people like it because they believe its a good film. Earlier this year I would have said that POTC 3 didnt have a chance of beating Spiderman 3 but coming off the success of POTC 2 then it could happen. The hype is definitely there.

Trust me, in order to reach the kind of numbers they did, both franchises have had to reach children/families. That segment is what seperates a big hit from a record breaking blockbuster.

IMO i thik that POTC 3 will win this one. Spidey 3 , will looking good will probably surpass the second spidey flick but won't beat POTC 3

POTC3 has the major advantage of POTC2 cliffhanger ending. So not only do you have the people who loved the film and went to see it more than once but also those who want to find out the fate of Captain Jack and the rest of the crew. All I know is next summer Im a happy camper...my two favorite franchises are coming to a banging close.

For some strange reason , i always see better movies in the oneven years.
And 2007 is no exception.

SPiderman 3 , Ghost Rider , POTC 3 , transformers , HP ...it's going to be a great year for blockbusters.

spiderman 3 my choice , but reign the box office.. PRobably POC , just cuse you have all those stupid little teenage girls going to see orlando or johnny depp . Lame. But i gotta say the trailer for spiderman 3 definately gets me all wet.

Pirates most likely win.After all, the second made over $1B.I would love to see Spidey be #1 for 2007, but unless something happens to Gore Verbinski, Johnny Depp, or Orlando Bloom and they get a crappy director/script, I don't see my favorite spider number 1:(

Spider-Man 3. POTC3 is being released too soon after the second, and POTC2 was overrated, good for a fun popcorn film, but over a billion dollars at the box office! Must be the Titanic situation of teenies going to see it for their daily Bloom and Depp fix, like they did for Leo.

I don't know about Shrek 3, havn't seen anything from it yet....

To be honest i think it's a bit silly IMO to say that POTC 2 was a big hit because teenage gals were always going to watch the movies cause of Orlando and Johnny.

The audience i've watched POTC 2 with , all 4 times , was very diverse. Alot of parents where there with their kids and their teenagers as well as young adults with their boyfriends/girlsfriends which shows that this is made for alle ages. It's funny , it doesn't push the PG rating and best of all it doesn't drag.

And the comparison between POTC 2 being like Titanic is also way off since Titanic was a love story . It was the main thing.
On POTC is really doesn't take center stage as the story can be simplified to Jack Sparrow's nautical adventure. It's all about Jack Sparrow.

Also how exactly is POTC being released too early :huh:
It's almost a full year after the release of the second movie and if it worked out just fine for the LOTR trilogy

Personally I think that the reason POTC 2 became bigger than Spider-Man 2 is that POTC is more fun, plain and simple. It's not necessarily a better movie, but more fun and entertaining for the more casual moviegoer.

I dont understand why some cant just give this movie its due...it is plausable that the film made this much money not only because of teenage girls but because the film was actually great and people beside little girls went to see it more than once.
