Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - Part 1

Yeah, Davy Jones was impressive as ****. Everybody swore it was a costume with CG tentacles.
It is still some of the greatest CGI a decade later. I could understand an argument calling it the best ever.

4th film is definitely the worst, but still enjoyable. I love all of the first 3. Don't care what anyone says. Lol. I have a Dead Man's chest poster on my wall. The Kraken, Davy Jones, Sparrows "death" scene, the giant wheel fight. All great stuff.

I do not find the 4th film enjoyable at all.

Ian McShane deserved a better character and a better movie.

How you cast Ian ****ing McShane as Blackbeard and then proceed to waste him is utterly beyond me.

Yeah... Blackbeard was ****ing wasted. Ian McShane. How do you **** that up? The directing was just so off point. With the humor too even. Even though the humor got a little grating in the sequels, Verbinski meshed so well with Elliot and Rossio's sense of humor and understood the wit.

I actually really like the 4th film and thought it was a big step up over the 3rd. I know that is an unpopular opinion though.

I prefer the fourth over the third at least in story. Though the third is better directed and more imaginative with better and more memorable set pieces and moments. The humor lands better too. I mean Will and Elizabeth getting married in that battle in the storm is excellent stuff. Just really imaginative and well directed. That's the type of thing that lacked in the fourth film.

Uhhh, what version did you see? I thought he was fun as Blackbeard. Coming off of a shoehorned, lazy, "sit-on-ass-doing-nothing" villain like Beckett, he at least was proactive and didn't let everyone else do everything for him while he literally sits back and does nothing but DRINK ****ING TEA AND EXPOSIT!

I found that the third was way too overlong and convoluted with too many different characters and plots. The 4th was helped a lot by cutting a lot of the dead weight and simply being a more streamlined, fun adventure.

Also, the mermaid attack might be favorite setpiece in the entire series.

That is the thing, it wasn't streamlined. They added a bunch of random characters that had little to no purpose, and had a ton of overlong scenes that were not directed particularly well.

Yeah, of the villains in this series, I think Beckett was easily the weakest. He was like every generic colonial English 'gentleman' villain ever. Those guys are a dime a dozen. Put on any show or film about the American Revolution and you'll see as many of them as you will bayonets.

Blackbeard was better than that in his introductory scene alone.

Exactly. Why couldn't they have made Norrington the villain of 2 and 3 instead of bringing in a new character? The end of the first movie alone had him set up as a recurring antagonist for later films and the second movie gave him every reason to want revenge on Jack. He could've gone full on Captain Ahab with Jack as his White Whale, going more and more insane over the course of the 2 movies, and having HIM take control of Davy Jone's heart would've made more sense and made him more of a threat for the third movie. Bringing in Beckett made things more complicated.

Not really. The only characters they could've gotten rid of were the Spaniards. They had no purpose except to destroy the Fountain of Youth for BS reasons.

What exactly was the point of the young guy and his relationship with the mermaid? What about Cruz's character was integral? Heck, what difference does it make if Blackbeard was there or not considering what is done with him?

Beckett isn't "the villain". It is Jones. Beckett puts a leash on Jones, but as soon as he breaks it, he is once again the Big Bad. In an odd way, Beckett is kind of the mcguffin of DMC and AWE, which is basically one long story. He is the one that pushes Elizabeth and Will back into Jack's path.

Jones and Blackbeard are the equivalent of each other, and Jones is a whole lot better.

There are some other minor characters, like the one played by Stephen Graham, but they are only around to add some color to the crew. Even the Spaniards are focused on the main goal of finding the Fountain of Youth, albeit for different reasons. The only character that isn't is Barbossa, and he's acting like he is until the very end of the film.

The third film has several different mini-plots with a dozen characters with entirely different goals and strategies all playing off each other like a poorly done Pirates Era version of Game of Thrones.

3 is a crazy, but the goals are actually not all that over the place, as they all settle on Davy Jones. He is the key to everything. The film starts with saving Jack. From there Jack's immortality, Will freeing his father, Elizabeth saving Will, the location of Calypso, Beckett controlling the seas. It all centers on Jones' heart. It isn't Game of Thrones, it is like the first Pirates film on steroids. All the double crossing can give a person a headache. :funny:

Beckett is the main villain of the third film. The main plot is that he wants to wipe out all piracy and the pirates need to unite to stop him. Davy Jones has a personal vendetta against Sparrow and is there to be the muscle, but that's it. He's not involved in the main conflict beyond Beckett forcing him to take part. Jones IS the main villain of the second film, but he has a subservient role in the third. A complete waste of a great character.

Jones isn't all that concerned with Jack in the third film. His concern is Calypso and getting his heart back from Beckett. At the end of the film Beckett has no control over Jones, and yet the battle with Jones is the climax of the film. Again, everything is built around him and more specifically his heart. DMC and AWE is one long story.

Yeah, they could cut him. No arguments there.

What about Cruz's character was integral?

The film needs a female lead for one. But beyond that she provides an emotional link between Sparrow and Blackbeard (who otherwise have nothing personal between them) and is there to show how depraved Blackbeard really is (that he loves her, but it is still willing to sacrifice her if helps himself).

Heck, what difference does it make if Blackbeard was there or not considering what is done with him?

In a quest film you need a villain also seeking the McGuffin to provide tension. He is also crucial to Barbossa's storyline as the subject of his revenge. You could drop Blackbeard and have The Spaniard fulfill the same role instead, I suppose, but the role needs to be fulfilled by somebody and Blackbeard is certainly the more flamboyant and colorful of the two.

They sure failed at that job. :funny:

Best part of that movie was that they make the ceiling to the fountain too high for people to reach on their own, so they need to get a bit of a boost to get up...but then the entire Spanish Inquisition just seems to rise up at the same time in formation, so I'm just left imagining there's another half of their army down their that they were standing on the backs of for a big dramatic entrance.

I thought this part was ****ing hilarious. The movie needed it.

A movie about Barbossa and the Brethren Court would be fantastic.

I really like Barbossa as a character, but I think he works best as the Daffy Duck to Sparrow's Bugs Bunny.

Its funny Game of Thrones is going to have a better sea battle than a huge Disney movie.... AWE's final battle was a load of **** lol all those ships and 2 fight.

They took the Jon Snow offer before the big battle. Single combat. :o
