Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Never thought I would see the day where people on this board *****ed about there not being ENOUGH CGI in a movie.

First we'll have to see how big her part is and how good she is. But hey, Knightley struck me as ridiculously gorgeous in the trailer for POTC1 as well and after I saw the movie, she struck me as someone who could be a real movie star and is just not an "it girl" at that moment (like Kirsten Dunst in 2002 or Megan Fox in 2007-2009). So perhaps.

But first let's see how she does in the movie. Personally I like the mermaid angle, but I hope an earnest love story is not a major part of this movie.

Which is why I said:

...if she pulls it off well...

Obviously it's all based on performance. It would indeed be foolish to think otherwise. What I was saying was that I think she has such a look that if combined with real talent, POTC may raise her stock. It's a weird thing to try and explain, as it's sort of this 'vibe' I just got from seeing her briefly. Can't say much more about it, other than that it's a strange feeling that kinda clicked. Granted, and as I mentioned, her role needs to be fairly sizeable if she is to be given the opportunity to leave an impression via acting, look, etc.

Interesting that you had similar feelings about Knightley though. No doubt POTC helped propel her. It has become a big beast this franchise, more-so than I think many might have imagined.

I think Keira is doing well for herself, so I'm not worried about her. Orlando on the other hand...

..and why the dislike for Cruz?

I wasn't trying to be confrontational, I was just considering what you were saying.

And yeah, when I saw the POTC trailer I was struck by how pretty the "unknown girl" was in it in that classic movie star way (more Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn than Megan Fox and Jessica Alba).

And she only had about 2 seconds of dialogue in it, but she had images like this:

And then she impressed in the movie and boom...2 years later she is getting nominated for an Oscar for Pride and Prejudice (though her best work to date, IMO, was supporting in Atonement).

So, it pays to be an It girl in these movies. But as Alba, Biels, and now Fox shows us, it helps if you have a lot of charisma and talent to sustain it, which Knightley has.

Of course the real breakout of that movie was Johnny Depp. He went from oddball, eccentric outsider to A-lister. ****, he just made a movie where he wore clown make-up, carrot-top hair and played a character who randomly broke into a thick Scottish accent one of the most successful films of all time. Now that's crazy. Though it seems doing typical Hollywood fare (The Tourist) still does not click with his talent and style.

Great trailer. I think this will be one of the better movies next year. Can't wait!

Yeah, in hindsight, my response seems rather defensive. I didn't really intend to make it out that way. Slight misread on my part. Apologies for the confusion. :)

I don't even remember seeing the POTC trailer, but Knightley definitely made an impression on me after watching the film. What you're describing is a similar reaction to what I'm having. It sounds absurd, of course, to make predictions based on literally three shots in a trailer, but as you said, sometimes you are just struck by things. In this trailer full of Johnny Depp, lavish settings and sword fights, this actress, based purely on look, stuck out the most to me. Not because she was "hot" or "fine" or "damn sexy," but because she has a beautiful yet atypical look of young Hollywood today. And yes, when you have talent to back yourself up, it certainly pays to have mainstream exposure.

I really like Johnny. A lot actually. He did some great stuff with Jack, stuff which the filmmakers actually feared if I recall correctly. He added immensely to the character. Great acting. And yes, he seems to certainly excel in these roles for sure. His Mad Hatter was so bizarre, but he was one of the few things in the movie I liked (my fav scene in the film was actually a really small moment, where he was discussing with Alice how if it was all a dream, how could he, as a figment of her imagination, have memories and thoughts and feelings that existed felt so real). I should point out though, that I thought he provided a pretty solid, subtle performance in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" Obviously one of his more normal roles, yet it's one of my favorites of his (I think I'd say Sweeney Todd earns the top spot).

Indeed. We shall see. I do think it is interesting with the POTC series instead of going for the obvious like Bruckheimer(sp?) did with all his Michael Bay movies (and Bay still does) he and Verbenski went for really out-of-the-box and off-the-wall casting choices. They had Orlando Bloom as their traditional strapping, young (and boring) hero--who the trailer is built around. But they got Depp playing a character unlike anything we've ever seen, they got Rush a great character actor who also seemed allergic to summer blockbusters like Depp prior to this. And they got an unknown classical English teenager instead of a Hollywood wannabe sex symbol as the love interest...and it all somehow clicked. Even if the writers apparently hated Depp and the studio reportedly were afraid he was "gay-ifying" and ruining their potential franchise. It paid off, so maybe they're doing that again. McShane, like Bill Nigh and Geoffrey Rush before him, is an unusual choice for a blockbuster that may pay off.

Yeah I was always a Depp fan. But his stardom seems ridiculous when you think about it. My favorite Depp performances are Ed Wood, Finding Neverland and Sweeney Todd as well.

im excited for this movie. i wonder what exactly is so zombie about the new pirate crew of blackbeards. i mean, are they actually flesh eating zombies and arent technically alive?

the supernatural elements seem like they will be pretty cool and fresh, the ship seems to be alive (scene in trailer when the rope catches a guy jumping overboard and yanks him back in) and mermaids, which seem more like sirens.

still really confused and interested in how exactly barbossa lost his leg. maybe when he was recruited by the king of england?

Always loved Johnny Depp, I just love his eccentric characters, I didn't like Alice overall but his performance and look of the Mad Hatter was terrific. And in case some of you don't know, Johnny Depp is a terrific artist/painter. He personally designed the Mad Hatter look, not Burton. And of course it's nice when he does more normal performances too. Finding Neverland is a masterpiece, he proved he could sing in Sweeney, and who can't love Ed Wood?

Back to Pirates haha, I am also interseted in how Barbosa lost his leg. I like his new look.

They give a time frame as to how much time has passed since the last movie?

This actually looks really good. So far it looks better than both Green Lantern and Thor. I'm impressed considering I strongly disliked AWE.

My little cousin's school play looks better than Green Lantern.

And like I said about the CGI... this film just wrapped filming Nov 19 so they've just begun the post process. That's why there's little to no CGI shots in the trailer. No doubt the final film will have tons of amazing ILM epicness.

so were the rumors true that because Cruz was pregnant that were trying to hide it? because there were a lot of strange camera angles on her?

We need more footage to decide something like that, but that is a very interesting point.
