Pixar's Turning Red - March 11, 2022

To be fair, they didn’t really give Encanto a chance. They basically said they’d release it digital in a month when it came out, so what kind of encouragement was that? I think Bob Chapek kind of set it up to fail in theatres cause I bet the word of mouth would’ve taken it far with legs.

Yeah I don’t think there’s some nefarious plot on the part of Disney to bury these movies. They just want people to sign up for D+. But Soul would have done really well in theaters. And Turning Red could have been released earlier this month to time with the Lunar New Year.
Well, I would argue the "nefarious plot" is taking their most artistically-minded studio and reducing it to a "content-machine" for their streaming service.

The animation is ok. It’s a minor nitpick but the main character doesn’t look very Chinese. Her eye shape could be more almond versus circular.

Obviously Covid played a factor, and Buzz is more well known, but it’s interesting their three “woke” movies (Soul, Luca, Red) went straight to D+ while Lightyear is getting a theatrical release.
In what world is the animation "okay" in this flick? The fur alone is better then the like 99.9% of animation we've ever seen. As for the art style, I'm going to go with the director on this one.

We don't know if Buzz is actually going to get a theatrical release anymore. Funny things going on with that one as well.

I haven’t seen all Pixar movies but this was easily their best since Inside Out and it’s Disney’s best offering in general during that time as well.

i was relieved, when they explained, she turns into a red panda...at first I thought it’s about her getting her first period.

lol. But it was very delightful and great animated. Also it’s a very important topic for kids being that age. Great, that they dared to touch that topic

Just watched this a few days ago and enjoyed it. I think Pixar has already covered a lot of ground that's in this movie and I don't particularly care for the Steven Universe type of animation on the human characters, but it's lively and entertaining. 7/10

I was surprised to find out that the "boy band" in the movie is actually supposed to be much older than they look. One of them has two kids, according to their Disney write-up. To me they didn't look any older than the 13 year olds in their audience. I thought they were a boy band like Menudo.

Also, it's the third recent Disney feature that's about a strong female authority figure exuding too much pressure on a younger member of the family and potentially ruining their life. This seems to be turning into a theme...

I liked this actually rewatching now. And yeah that song “Nobody Like You” pops up in my head now.

Charming, maybe Pixar's most charming movie but the third act goes a little overboard and the story wasn't as compelling as I wished. Probably one of the weaker films from Pixar in recent years.

Loved Mei though and it's actually one of the few Pixar movies of late that I could see potential for a sequel.

Finished watching the movie. I thought it was pretty good. I think Inside Out handled the emotion aspect of the movie better though. I honestly don’t know how this movie would have done in theaters (to a broader general audience). Also, why does this movie take place in 2002 exactly? I thought they would flash forward 20 years at the end and show a grown up Mei with her daughter going through a similar thing but that never happened.
That's the sequel! Or even just Mei at 17/18.

Given the hysteria we have seen at schools over a lot of ****, yeah, the audience reviews make sense.

When the twerking happened, I had two reactions. First, I nearly died laughing. Then I thought about how all the conservative parents were going to react to it, and I nearly died laughing again.

I find the double standards on these boards fascinating...

we are all different, we all have different views, but to laugh and dismiss others, down playing their core values, esp. if religious is astonishing to me.

Yup, some religious folk are strict on sexual matters - it's fair to say all religions share the similar beliefs when it comes to sex. Some muslim kids sit out of sex ed, is that laughable? Would you post the same if the comment was from a muslim parent?

I can see why some didn't expect this from Disney... and I can see why they were offended by it. Do I agree? It's irrelevant - but you gotta respect that and afford others that.

We all have levels of acceptance and for some this was too much.

This is a great film, but I too felt a tad uncomfortable watching it infront of a class room as it covered topics some families haven't discussed yet in that age group. Why, because it's down to the parents....

Let's understand that everyone is different and we need not mock.

Racists are "different". Or at least should be. Should I respect them? How about homophobes? Transphobes? Anti-Semites?

You say such things are "down to the parents". I say anyone can be a parent, including bigots and those that abuse their children, many of which use religion as an excuse for both. Telling a 13 year old who is going through puberty they need to repress themselves and not learn who they are because of a terrible interpretation of a religion tells them so, sounds like incredibly bad parenting at best, and pretty obvious abuse at worst. I don't respect that, and I never will, especially when I see Christian conservative led offensive on LGBTQIA+ kids around the world, including the US.

If you are a conservative or Christian and you take offence to anything written in this thread, perhaps it's time to maybe look around and see what's going on.
