Everybody refers to the Sentry as a schizophrenic agoraphobe. So I guess he hears voices and they tell him not to go outside...

Seriously, why Red Hulk? What's the point?

Probably an environmental colouring effect. Fire is red, hence, the colour of the bright flames is being reflected off the Hulk.

It had to do with the printers at the time and how the grey tended to look like green.
