anytime they're not driving = great dialogue...

what makes it so "bad"... and don't say "it was boring" ... ??

How about I didn't find it particulary engaging or entertaining on any level whatsoever.

I don't know if the dialouge is nessecarly great, but what it is, is real life conversations that people have, and I am under the impression that was what QT was going for, they aren't rambling off about this killer they herd a rumor from there friends about, they are just normal people going about there normal lives, unaware of what is after them....in saying that it still goes on abou 5-6 minutes to long to be completely about nothing really, i think its suitable dialouge that goes on a bit too long

That's how I saw it. There are so many serial killer slasher films where the characters' dialogue only serves to reference the fact that there's a killer on the loose. I think you can appreciate the characters more if you get the impression that they exist outside of the context of the film's main plot, which I Think Tarantino did with the dialogue.

I'll agree, it did run a little long.

I think what makes Death Proof really special is how it goes against slasher film conventions. Generally, these films feature weak and powerless women at the mercy of immortal serial killers. Most of the women in Death Proof were totally empowered. They were in control of the men in their lives. That was the whole point of the film. Girl Power. Instead of the second group of girls being the victims, they suddenly took control of the situation and chased after Stuntman Mike. How many slasher films have you seen where the killer is chased down by his victims? For all of the hating about Death Proof, I have yet to see one person actually point out that the film takes a lot of the conventions of slasher films, puts them on their heads, and spins them as fast as it can.

For me, DP had the most substance.

Not to mention, its one hell of a ride.

But, like I said, Tarantino hating is trendy. Who wants to spend the time actually thinking about his work when you can just dismiss it entirely?

Death Proof was terrible. First time I ever groaned out loud and prayed for the movie to get on with it. the women were irritating and boring. The car chase, some was ok, but was complete bull****. Stuntman Mike couldnt ram a car that wa snot built for destruction off the road in like 30 hits? Then the girl flies off the hood and nothing happens to her? IM OK? WTF Then they go and endanger and or kill innoncent people on their way back, and then kill him with there bare hands. Cmon. Not enough stuntman mike, and they made him seem so weak after one car chase. Tottaly takes away formt eh deathprrof theme when your indestructible car cant beat a normal car with 3 annoying girls, one on top of the hood. Tottaly unreal. What a waste of a film. I only stayed to see if Kurt managed to kill those *****es and answer my prayers. But he didnt. proof there is no justice in this world.

Planet Terror was fun though.

Can some one explain the texting thing?

The car the girls were driving wasn't a normal car. It was a ****ing 1970 Dodge Challenger. That vehicle is badass.

I think they're about the same. Death Proof is the BETTER MADE MOVIE with just better all around production writing, acting, etc. But it is quite uneven and a bit flawed with a slow opening and characters that you don't really like or care about (apathy is not a definition of exploitation...okay it is, but I expect better). But Planet Terror is the more entertaining movie. It is a lot more fun (and predictable) with great cheesy mindless awesomness.

I voted for Death Proof simply because it is getting a bad rap around this thread because it chose to put some development into it (albeit the first 20 minutes were unforgivably poorly paced). If I could choose, I'd choose the four trailers over either movie.

Overall Grindhouse was pretty fun and much better than the last style over substance hack job named 300.

Oh well.

the whole female empowerment thing is sort of a staple of lowbudget 70's exploitation flicks, especially in Pam Grier movies. it may be less common in conventional horror, although i could point out Nightmare on Elm Street as an example of the female victim actively hunting and attacking the killer in a slasher movie.
i liked Death Proof though, so i don't really get all the hate either.

We all understood the point of the movie. What many of us hated about it is that the idea was not well executed! End of story.

lol. I know. Thanksgiving was awesome!

I brought that up already, but its landing on blind eyes for some reason. Tarantino fanboys can't admit when he screws up. The same thing happened with Four Rooms. Have you seen that movie? Tarantino's segment was garbage yet the fanboys will defend it. Oh, and that was another movie where Rodriguez's part not only kicked ass but kicked Tarantino's ass!

they were fantastic and funny
but i think death proof was better.
other than the preview for machete lol

I'm just going to defend myself and say that I do agree this was Tarantino's worst effort, but I still thought it was really good. And come on dude, Four Rooms on a whole was garbage. No director had a good segment in that film in my opinion. But Rodriguez and Tarantino had the better segments. Rockwell and Ander's segments were just embarrassing.

I liked them just about equally, but for different reasons. Death Proof was the better movie though.

I agree Catman.

Death Proof was just pure sh***y garbage, but hey, QT says it's based off his favorite sh***y garbage films from the 70s! Therefore we must all love it like the fanboys do.

And QT is a f**king liar. How the hell can he say this film is a slasher flick.

Its really more of a Foxy Brown revenge flick, especially at the end

Loop Hole Alert: It has the slasher film formula! Meaning...creepy guy stalks girls and kills them.

Its not even a Foxy Brown flick.

thats not what i was saying, just that last like 10 minutes where the tables turn on Stuntman Mike, it just kind of becomes like the old 70's girl power movies kind of

Planet Terror was great. Rose McGowan did a go-go dance, and had a machine gun leg. The Hauge brothers, the Crazy Baby-sitter Twins, and the Block doctors are all classic characters. "He's getting his dick wet, sir." That's all I need to say.

Death Proof was great. However: The seven-minute diner scene needed to be condensed. I don't care how impressive it is that they did it all in one take; it got boring. Zoe and Kim arguing about playing Ship's Mast, and then arguing with Abernathy about going without her also needed to be condensed. Not to mention, the Kim character was really irritating. Acting like a stereotypical, no-nonsense, neck-swirling black woman is not cute. However: Kurt Russel gave the performance of his career. If there's any justice in the world, Sydney Pointier, Vanessa Ferlito, and Jordan Ladd should all become stars. That first death scene that we had the pleasure of seeing four different ways was quite possibly the most awesome thing I've ever seen. And, I've seen a lot of ****. Plus, the final chase was done without CGI. Badass.

I hope to God that word of mouth fuels this weekends box-office numbers for Grindhouse, because I would love for this to turn into a never-ending series with a carousel of directors coming through with Spaghetti Westerns, Horror flicks, Blaxploitation movies, and so on.

well the thing is, as long as this can make about 30-40 mill (which would be a dissapointment) if it can get close to or over its 50 million, and the dvd sales are as good as they probably will be, this can be a never ending franchise

just the difference is if the directors star power goes down, the budget will too, but i think Rob Zombie/ Eli Roth Grindhouse at 20-30 mill would work just fine..or whatever

the ultimate would be Wes Craven/John Carpenter though...

Grindhouse had a 54 mil budget with 30 mil spend on advertising. This movie will make its money through worldwide box office and DVD sales/rentals.

the other thing is with smaller budgeted movies (like under 80 million) the theatrical release is one big marketing campaign for the dvd sales, cause theatrically movies have to pay 1/2 of the gross to the theaters anyways, so as long as they can get close to making back what they spent on it, they will surely make money on dvd's when they can keep almost all the money

Planet Terror is a better all around film, but Death Proof has the better ending, and I'd tap Zoe.
