I think Planet Terror had a really cool theme about everyone having some purpose, even if they don't realize it yet; Death Proof had the excellent anti-bully theme of come-uppance.
Death Proof was slower paced, but that doesn't make it a better or deeper film(and that's coming from someone that loved Death Proof).
I think they had about the same amount of substance, PT had quite a bit more entertainment value though.

I kinda wish that there was a statement made by Tarantino....I want to hear his side of this because there seems to be a lot of confusion going on with his movie..

And the whole text messaging scene in "Death Proof" to connect it to "Planet Terror" went on too long. It's like Jeez, we get it already.:whatever:
How did the text messaging scene connect to Planet Terror? I think I missed something..

No, she didn't. She was texting the director guy they were talking about, Chris Simonson.

I was just watching Tarantino on Carson Daly (:o ) and he said that opening weekend he sneaked into a few theaters to see the audience reaction. And, after Planet Terror was over some kids behind him said, "wow! best movie of the year" then left. lol. They didn't even see his movie. lol.

Yeah...That's what I thought..

Unless I missed something, I dunno...DP takes place sometime before PT..

I don't know (or care) which one fit the exploitation mold better, but I'm going with Planet Terror because it was more fun.

Oooh, Matt really put on the movie critic spectacles for this double feature...:)

Death Proof was complete and total ****. 99.9% of the time, I understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder..... but I cannot even grasp how someone could enjoy Death Proof. I dont think I ever checked my watch so much in a movie.

I'd have to agree...My friend setting next to me announced several times, "God, this is SOOO boring!"

And no one ever told him to be quiet :o

Planet Terror was cheap thrills. Death Proof was raw and real. You were scared for Zoe when she was on the hood of that car. In the end, Death Proof was more satisfying than Planet Terror.

i agree.. my heart was pounding and i was at the edge of my seat in deathproof, i laughed, and i cheered like hell at the end. if a movie can make me do those 3.. then its a good movie. planet terror really didnt do that to me

Planet Terror was way better. Death Proof was pretty lame... I enjoyed it as part of the 'Grindhouse' concept, but if I paid to see just that I would have been pissed...

I just didn't like the format of DP, didn't like the characters at all in the second half, it all just seemed so forced... The dialogue was just cliched Tarantino, only Tarantino has no idea how women talk. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't enjoyable, the chase scene fell well short of my expectations, and it just flat out was the over the top campfest exploitation film that it should have been to fit with the theme... It was too dry.

Death Proof stuck with me alot more because of way it toys with conventional storytelling and the way the hunter becomes the hunted. I watched it Sunday and it stays in my mind. Especially the bluntness of the female revenge fantasy.

Planet Terror has alot more replay value though. The cheap thrills and gross out moments make for a great movie going experience. You never know what's going to happen next. It's the most chaotic movie I've ever seen. There were scenes that made me feel physically ill but it's cool for a movie to challenge you in that way. It doesn't treat you like a baby like so many R-rated movies.

I can't vote for one over the other so I voted "equally good" which is appropriate because they're two sides of the same coin.

I brought that up already, but its landing on blind eyes for some reason. Tarantino fanboys can't admit when he screws up. The same thing happened with Four Rooms. Have you seen that movie? Tarantino's segment was garbage yet the fanboys will defend it. Oh, and that was another movie where Rodriguez's part not only kicked ass but kicked Tarantino's ass!

Oh shoot, I forgot about Four Rooms! :( That movie was HORRIBLE!! I remember Starz! used to show that DUMP of a movie round the clock when we had a trial run of the channel one summer  :cmad:

i just saw grindhouse a second time, and i think this time i preferred death proof.

The only good thing about Four Rooms was Rodriguez's segment!

Which segment was that? The one w/the topless witches (and Madonna :whatever:)??

And wasn't Tarantino's just another 'Reservoir Dogs' type segment?

um...no! He directed the one with that actor, um, what was his name again? Oh, thats right! Antonio Banderas! Rodriguez directed the segment where Banderas goes out with the wife and leaves Tim Roth's character in charge of his kids. And the kids are worse than that baby from the Roger Rabbit movie. lol.

And wasn't Tarantino's just another 'Reservoir Dogs' type segment?

No. He directed the last segment. The one where they pay Tim Roth to cut some guys finger.

Oh yeah, duh! Geeze, Rodriguez is a bit of a two trick pony. It's either outrageous violence (El Mariachi & sequels/DuskTillDawn/SinCity/PlanetTerror) or hamboned kids fare (SpyKids 1-10)...:whatever:

Heck, thats more than Tarantino! I hate the Spy Kids movies but I give him credit for atleast trying to do something different! I can't say the same about Tarantino. The closest he's come to doing something different was Kill Bill, vol. 1

^ Which, to his credit, was a GREAT movie (movies?). But he slipped back into "what are you doing?!" mode w/this one...

And I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather not watch a Tarantino war movie

What in god's name is wrong with you people? A little bit of violence and **** and you completely glance over an amazing movie like Death Proof? Don't get me wrong I enjoyed Planet Terror like I enjoy most of Rodriguez's movies by disconnecting myself from the story, and just enjoying it scene by scene however, he doesn't ever actually make a good movie, perhaps it's because he's a lousy scriptwriter. Planet Terror isn't even really a B-Movie, B-Movies were B-Movies because they didn't have a budget, so there wasn't death and blood every 5 seconds. The reason Death Proof was awesome is because it's exactly what a B-Movie is like, usually has a big star within a rather poorly budgeted film in which they filled the scenes in between the one or two action sequences they had with needless banter. However Quentin Tarrantino uses these spots to display hilarious banter as well as delving deeper into the characters so that we actually give a **** about them. In the first half, we're sadden that these characters are ripped from it and aren't even able to finish their character arcs, which leads to the most awesome ending ever! The second bit is simply Quentin's control of the camera, is awesome! My friend and I jaws were on the floor by the end of the movie since everyone was saying how much better Planet Terror compare to Death Proof when it was the opposite.
