Prequel to 'The Thing'

LOL, the comic book version looks like a muppet, not the face of evil.

I find it odd that this movie is getting such unnecessary negative flak, and i am not only talking about from this forum but others i read. Of course it will look that same as JC's because it happens at the same time, and having the same music is a plus for me. Also didn't any of you wonder while watching JC's The Thing.....think gee i would love see what went on in the Norwegian camp....or am I the only one.

Nope, I thought the same thing myself when I saw the film for the first time. People just need to quit their whining and *****ing. The ones hating on it are going to see it as well so everyone should just accept the fact that the film got made in the first place. I, for one, am glad we'll be able to see the new Thing & the '82 Thing back to back.

You might be the only one. :oldrazz:

It was pretty self explanatory in Carpenter's version.

I don't know about in movie theaters, but when you buy the new Thing, you can watch it back to back with the '82 Thing.

Matthijis wrote this on his FB the other day:

I filmed it in a such a way that if you delete the end titles and JC opening titles you could make it into one long film. I even tried that in the edit and it worked.

Seems they started doing a bit of press for The Thing. Tweet from Jonathan Lloyd:

A day of press for #theThingprequel Felt good to talk about a movie I'm very excited about!

Now that is cool.

Here's the Flak..."what can you do with the characters/ dynamic that has not been done by JC"

The dynamic of being in a closed space in a hostile landscape, not trusting your fellow mates in a small group was really nailed on the head by JC.

I just don't know what there is to do here.

Like I said still a huge fan , and still going to see it, but consider the gauntlet thrown down.

I think if I were making this movie, I might have gone a different route. Maybe in the form of a rescue team discovering the wreckage or the aftermath.

Might have been cool to make this sequel the "aliens" and possibly create a franchise here.

The video game The Thing actually does do the exploration-after-the-fact story and it's incredibly good. I don't know what the reviewers thought but I think that game was great. I have been debating off and on of playing it again since the prequel has been in production. It would make a nice trilogy with the prequel, the movie and the video game sequel.

I know when I saw the JC movie my logical questions were:

-What the heck is the alien? (although the pure mystery of it does make the JC movie more horrifing)
-What would happen if this thing hit the rest of the world.?

I didnt play that Game, but i heard it was good.

I think there's more to explore but I share your concerns. I think that throwing females in you could have some fun exploiting male lust / chivalry instincts. Perhaps use the Thing infection as an STD metaphor.

I also think they're not as tied in to the "they all died " ending as we may think. It's a reasonable assumption for Carpenter's film but there are alternatives that don't contradict Carpenter.

I do share the concern that not much new will be brought to the table though.

Not surprising but it will be surprising if it doesn't suck. The first The Thing game is one of a handful of adaptations/sequels I thought transitioned well from the movies.

I really want to play The Thing game. I should see if I can snag a copy on eBay, because it sounds like it's well worth the money.

Anyway, I am excited for this movie and I think it's quite promising how much respect the director seems to have for the 80's version. The fact that he claims he edited this movie to work with the first one as one long movie makes me very excited, and my hats off if they actually pull it off. The Thing is one of my favorite horror movies ever and I hope they do it right.

Also, I'd like to add that when I saw The Thing for the first time, I actually saw it on Cable turned it on in the middle so I had no idea what it was. It was just a bunch of guys out in the snow, but it felt tense, like something bad was going to happen-- and then, when a guy's head popped off of his body and grew spider legs, I know I was in for a wild ride. :word:

Oddly enough, I had a similar experience with Big Trouble in Little China. The first time I saw it I only saw the climax and didn't know what the name was, but it left such an impression on me and my brothers that we were constantly imitating it and making inside jokes about it. When we finally learned what the name was and found a copy, it was marvelous. Funny how both movies star Kurt Russel. :D

That THing game was good because it really had nothing to do with the "release" of a movie, thus it was not a marketing ploy, or a game that would sell X copies on the coattales of a movie release.

Games based on movies like that tend to be pretty decent.

It looks cool.

But it looks like a remake..dog cages, flame throwers, the casting..looks so much like the JC movie.

...and its just called The Thing

Looks like we will see more of the alien ship
