PS3 Might Become A Tivo?

Well the article says if it happens, it won't be until next year. They also talk about needing a tuner, so I'm guessing it will be an add-on accessory. Still, if it's priced right, I would definately get it.

sounds cool. Id only get it for HD recording capability bc I already have a DVR in my PC but it doesnt accept HD signals

How does one become a TiVo? I'm guessing this requires intense concentration and patience.

Does anyone else find this useless and pointless. I buy a video game system to play games. Not to watch movies. Not to record TV. Not to go on the Internet.

I find any add on to be a good thing...Wii has internet and is still a great game system, and the internet doesnt take anything away from it...the 360 is a dvd player, that doesnt take anything away from it as a game system...saying "more funtioncality is stupid!" is...well...stupid :o

I don't mind extra functionality, so long as it does come with a higher price. I don't want to pay an extra $400 next generation for a bunch of features I don't need/want, just so I can play some games.

I agree. As long as it doesn't raise the price much more than it already is, I am fine with this. All they are doing is looking at the game system they already created and seeing new ways to use it is all. I see nothign wrong with that.

From what I've heard and read, the PS3 was built with the ability to perform as a TIVO like device, and that all that is needed is a firmware update. Also, I heard Sony has been in talks with AT&T for a while.

Um, of course it's going to be game console still, but if this works out I might be able to get rid of my tivo. This is awesome.

I love it. I think the PS3 works well as a media device. I love that the PS3 works as a DVD and BR player, 2 things Ive been needing. I like that it can link up with PC to use those files wirelessly. It has a good web browser. Giving it DVR features is just another great added touch. It doesnt make it worse, just only better. Ive been pretty satisfied with it since purchasing

this is why I love my xbox, it comes at a low price to begin with and you can spec it up with extras as time goes on.

I don't care about wireless and by not including it they probably shaved about $30 off the console price

Initially I wasn't bothered about HD-DVD's so the option to buy the drive later worked great for me.

In my opinion modular systems are a great way to get the console out cheaply while still having the option for these features, at a cost, later on.

I see what you're saying, but I see the Blu-Ray i the PS3 as somethign worthy of the price tag simply because since it is in all teh PS3s, game developers can actually use the technology to their advantage where they can't for the 360 since HD-DVD isn't standard.

Now, of course there are some on this board that believe Blu-Ray storage space won't really affect gaming and there are some that truly believe it will. Only time will tell which group is correct.

Also, I do like Microsoft's system, but am still wary of add-ons to a system sometimes. Microsoft is fine IMO since all of their add-ons seem more media centered such as teh HD-DVD player and whatnot, but I am still skeptical on the Wii. I'm not likeing the idea that some games in the future will need the Wiigun + the Wiiboard for "full functionality" or some crap like that possibly forcing some gamers to buy more things just to get "the full experience" of the games.

IMO you should be able to fully play all games with the basic system itself, and then add on extras like media devices if you so want (like Sony and Microsoft are doing)

At the moment all that memory is being used up duplicating information because the disk reads too slowly to lode effectively. Which means all that extra space is being used up to create exactly the same effect. Essentially they NEED 3 or 4 times as much memory as the ps3 is so slow at reading off of blu ray discs. I hardly consider that to be advantageous ;)

Oh I fully agree that so far it hasn't really improved anything. However, we still are early in teh PS3s life cycle, and I sitll think there could be ways to take advantage of it in the future.

maybe, I'm still waiting for microsoft to release the "ultra-premium-halo-cash-cow" edition with a blue ray/hd-dvd combi drive for like $10'000 :(

haha...you forgot to include Vista

While vista will be included with the ultra-premium-halo-cash-cow-mega-awesome-enjaculate-inducing edition it is not ready for release yet as they haven't workedo ut how to let hackers steal your credit card details yet. Once the security has been proven to be a complete shambles it will be released across all systems :o
