Quasar??????

Maybe Marvel lost the thread on What kind of Person Wendall was supposed to be an equated lack of a killer instinct with "wimp".

Funny you say that. Joe Q doesn't dig Quasar because of the "lack of killer instinct" thing. I don't think he "got" it. LOL...I wrote him a letter explaining it. :woot: Check this out, just who is responsible for Q's death? Hmmm...

NRAMA: QUASAR
Best suited for ongoing solo, limited series, or cast member:
JQ: As a cast member.
Why it worked/didn’t work in the past:
JQ: Well, Quasar ran for about for about 5 years but it was never a huge seller. I would argue that there were always problems with this character. A cool look obviously derived from Captain Marvel, but I never felt there was much to hold onto with the character.
Arguably, his origin adheres to the Marvel formula in manner so calculated that it’s transparent. He’s a Peter Parker archetype with cosmic powers and the lack of a killer instinct is what made him compatible with his cosmic band doohickeys. I don’t know something about a hero without a killer instinct. Having a killer instinct doesn’t mean you act upon it, it just means that you want to win at all costs.
Captain America has a killer instinct, great athletes have a killer instinct, Wendell couldn’t cut it with S.H.I.E.L.D. so they make him a guy who stands by guarding a door? Sorry, I was never ever able to buy into the whole Quasar thing.
What it would need to work today? JQ: Find someone new to be Quasar and start from scratch.

I think that is MY biggest issue with Marvel right now. The editor in chief doesnt have to like all the books as long as the fans do

Look at it from a business perspective. The fact that it didn't sell that well tells Joe Q that a lot of the readership agrees with him. If people really loved Quasar, wouldn't it have sold better? Obviously that's an oversimplification, but that seems to be how he correlates sales to fan appreciation.

I don't think that's always true. I mean, Spider-Girl has sold like **** it's entire existence but Joe recognizes it's small, but very supportive fanbase, and that's why it's still being published today.

Yeah, but he also indicated that if people liked the Peter/MJ marriage, more would be reading Spider-Girl. He has a funny way of looking at sales and fans...

He doesn't believe that for a minute. That was him being an ass.

Holy Spit. He did kill Quasar.

You'd think that what the fans want/like would mean more.

I have a slew of characters that I enjoy when they show up,... but don't require them to be in their own book or even co star in multiples.

Quasar was one of these.

Heck - a list :

Quasar
Adam Warlock
MoonDragon
Daredevil
Moonknight
Turbo
Blade
Machine Man
Puck (Both of them)
Cargill
Prowler (Original)

And these are just off the top of my head.

Sales weren't all that bad. Granted Quasar never sold a million copies but he did sell anywhere from 100,000 to 40000 copies per issue. I would also argue that Quasar was never a comic that people "collected" - - meaning bought more than one issue like X-Force or something. If anything Q's numbers show that he had a dedicated readership, imo.

And I never equate high sales to high quality, either. ;)

Well, yeah, only idiots equate sales to quality. But the guys running Marvel's business kind of need to equate sales to marketability--if a character traditionally sold 100,000 to 400,000 issues at a time when the best-selling comics were selling upwards of a million copies or more, relatively speaking, that comic wasn't exactly a big enough hit to warrant coming back. Add to that the fact that Joe Q is personally prejudiced against cosmic characters and stories and it becomes pretty clear that Quasar's not getting a new series anytime soon, unfortunately. Even the Silver Surfer couldn't get a new ongoing series, and his comic sold much better than Quasar's. We're lucky if we get one cosmic ongoing out of each Annihilation event, and Conquest's slot is already taken by GotG.

But at least GotG is a team book, and new characters for it seem to be popping up like crazy. DnA have already shown us a great way, in my opinion, for Quasar to come back in Nova's TO fever-dream, too. Maybe they'll realize that dream somewhere down the line and Quasar will return. :)

Ok, all you slackers. No excuses now!

I know some of you out there have/had every intent on signing and mailing the petition, but just "haven't gotten around to it yet."

So I have come up with a way for the petition to come to YOU!

Just go here and fill out the form-
http://www.bringbackwendell.com/mission.htm

You will receive, in the mail, the petition with a pre-paid envelope. All you have to do is sign and mail!

That's it!

We need to make Marvel aware that there are some Wendell fans still out there!

-Matt

I'm not signing that useless crap. Joey Q wouldn't even waste the paper to print it out and wipe his bum with it.

Joe Q doesnt have a reverance for Marvel Continuity, especially the 90s.

He has done so many wack strories and killings, that i really am not sure what the difference is between trading card celo sealed number 1 varients and his gimmicky events.

I never understood what he meant by that "killer instinct" line. Thats just plain BS. Not only are there many, many heroes who do not "win at all costs" , but Wendell battled some tough foes and went through a lot of hardship in his heroics..didnt he fly for months just to find eon? Steve Rogers didn't win at all costs...he had morals. Wasn't this the point of Stamford? I mean the Warriors won and took out those villians, was the cost worth it?

Oh yeah the New Warriors, another flawed Joe Q gripe.

Wendell was initially rejected from SHIELD because he lacked a "killer instinct." Which, of course, has no bearing on his ability to be a hero, just on his ability to be a SHIELD agent. I guarantee you Spider-Man and a bunch of other heroes would fail the "killer instinct" SHIELD test, too. :o

Even at absurd hours of the morning, you remain chronically unenthusiastic. :(

Eh, it's pretty justified in Quasar's case, I'd say. Phyla's been pretty useless so far, and I actually used to like her. :(

Wow, Quasar fans really resent Phyla.

I don't really resent Phyla for being who she is..the character is just a mess of cliche.

-a female replacement version of an exisiting hero

-a politically correct sexual orientation representation..which IMO is only a minor issue but when you see all the stuff DC does you get a bit jumpy on the cliche-ness of this.

-an alternate reality character.

-allowed to live while genis and quasar , guys who sold books for a bit, are killed off as flawed.

Maybe I would like Phyla more if she were just Phyla. Why do we need a "Quasar" when you don't even think the original was worthy of the job and title.

I'd like Phyla more if she were more like herself as Captain Marvel. I don't know who this whiny ***** throughout Conquest has been, but it ain't the Phyla I know.

Well, the Phyla you know's lesbo dragon lover wasn't dead. :o
