Questions for Capt. American Fans

Hey guys, and girls. This is my first post.

I'm not into Cap but i have two questions...
What is his sheild made of? And what was the only thing to crack his shiled? Is it indestructible?

I remember it was cracked in secret wars and a machine repaired it. the came place spidey got the symbiote.

I'm a big spidey fan, and have been reading amazing for years and now sensational. I aslo read spawn and hellblazer. Only read a few issues Cap a long time back.

Thanks

If you're not reading Cap's series, you're missing out on the definitive version of the character. Give it a try.

As far as his shield goes, I don't remember if there's a technical name for what it's made of. I seem to remember that the scientist who invented the formula was killed and his secret formula died with him, with adamantium being the closest anybody has come to creating something as indestructable.

shield is made of adamantium/vibranium the indestructible adamantium and vibranium which can absorb vibration and force

I think it was a vibranium/steel alloy.

They only made adamantium after Cap's shield was made.

i agree with this post

There's no adamantium in any way involved with Cap's shield. It's Vibranium and some unknown material or just vibranium treated in an unknown manner.
The key ingredient is Vibranium.

The rest is truth, justice, liberty, hot dogs, baseball and apple pie.

And vibranium doesn't absorb vibrations, it gives vibrations that just vibrate energy and force off, giving it an "invicible" status. I think Cap's shield is made of some unknown alloy primarily made up of Vibranium, which kind of is clashing, since Vibranium just destroys all other metals.

Side note: It's the only metal in the known universe "strong enough" to contain Celestials in their body suits.

Antarctic vibranium destroys other metals. Wakandan vibranium absorbs and dulls vibrations, up to a certain point.

The story of Cap's shield goes like this: a scientist (McClain, I think his name was) was working on a new alloy involving vibranium and steel. He fell asleep and some unknown agent got into the mix. When he woke up, the metal had set into a circular shape and was completely unbreakable. Since a giant metal disc only has so many applications, it was painted and given to Captain America as a weapon.

Adamantium is the result of later attempts to duplicate the process that created Captain America's shield.

His name was something else he was Jewish, that much I know.

I looked it up, it was Dr. Myron MacLain. I think you may be confusing him with Dr. Erskine, who was code-named Dr. Reinstein. He was responsible for the Super-Soldier Serum.

The original version had the shield made out of adamantium and vibranium. This account was told in both the comics and the original handbook the text of which is posted on marveldirectory.com. They seem to have retconned that to eliminate the adamantium. The vibranium only shield however would have serious problems since vibranium absorbs energy directed against it and stores it in its atomic structure until it reaches its saturation point when it releases all the energy it ever absorbed in a single explosion. As much as Cap uses his shield against powerful attacks it would reach its saturation point fairly rapidly. Against someone like the Hulk or Thanos it could possibly reach saturation in a single battle. Also a vibranium shield could not rebound as Caps does since it would absorb the kinetic energy of the impact and simply stop and fall to the ground. The all vibranium story will probably eventually be retconned back to the original story.

It's not only vibranium, though. It's a vibranium/steel alloy/unknown catalyst combination. Presumably that accounts for why Cap's shield doesn't hold all of the energy directed at it. Although I'm fairly certain all of Black Panther's vibranium gear doesn't retain all of the energy directed at it, either, so that may just be a dated point that's been retconned out quietly over time.

They have already featured the absorbtion in a major story where they bombed an entire island made out of vibranium. The island was destroyed but the vibranium absorbed all the sound of the explosion so that it was completely silent. Adamantium is nothing but a form of iron.

Yeah, but you said vibranium absorbs vibration and holds it indefinitely, until it builds up too much and explodes. The holding indefinitely part seems to have been forgotten.

Even if it doesn't hold it indefinately anymore the more powerful beings could still generate enough energy to reach saturation. Roxxon was able to destroy an entire island made of vibranium, it would be relatively easy to destroy a mere 12 pounds of the stuff.

You're still forgetting the alloy part. "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts," as the old adage goes. Obviously, whatever happened to the shield while MacLain was asleep strengthened it exponentially compared to pure Wakandan vibranium. Still, Cap's shield has become saturated with energy and shattered before, presumably because of the vibranium content.

Doom with the Beyonders power broke the shield (Secret wars). And Thors' hammer dented the shield (Stand off).

Other than that, I don't think Caps shield has been harmed in any significant way.

It shattered due to a microscopic imperfection left in its composition from the reforging after the Beyonder incident. It was taped together to work with an energy absorber and Cap used it to block a sonic blast from Klaw, which reforged it again.

Molecule Man made it, Thor's hammer, Surfer's board, and Iron Man's armor dissapear in one move.

Go Owen.

:thing: :doom: :thing:

Thor's hammer didn't make much sense to me if he unraveled their atomic structures. Thor himself is immune to such molecular ****wittage due to his divine nature. You'd think an artifact empowered by even more powerful magic would have similar immunities.

Well... Owen being half a cosmic cube would explain some of that mystic crud.
