Salvatore's name is probably synonymous with Dungeons and Dragons or Drizzt.

These aren't his best works by any means. I wholeheartedly recommend you the Demon Wars Saga, a series of seven books split into 2 trilogies with a bridge book.

The First Demon Wars Saga:

The Demon Awakens
The Demon Spirit
The Demon Apostle

The Bridge Book:

Mortalis

The Second Demon Wars Saga:

Ascendance
Transcendance
Immortalis

A brief summary:

In the land of Corona, every so often an entity known as the demon dactyl, Bestesbulzibar, awakens from its slumber. The darkness in the hearts of men throughout the land allows it to return to the world of the living.

A team of hunters in the forested town of Dundallis return from a hunting trip with a dead goblin. The townsfolk act surprised at the discovery of the goblin, having never seen one or believing the creatures to be folklore fodder.

The town is destroyed by a band of goblins. Only Elbryan Wyndon and Jilseponie Ault survive. Elbryan is taken in by the Touel'alfar elves (resemble sprites) while Jilseponie is adopted by husband-and-wife barkeepers from a city called Palmaris. A monk also discovers the hypocrisy behind the Abellican Order, a religious order that specializes in gemstone magic. This Order ranks just below the king in the country of Honce-the-Bear.

The demon dactyl is confronted and vanquished. The Demon Spirit and The Demon Apostle deal with conflicts of church and state, with the Father Abbot Markwart of the Abellican Order challenging the King of Honce-the-Bear for rulership of the country.

Mortalis ties up some of the plot lines from the first 3 while introducing new characters--such as the Doc'alfar dark elves--that play a role in the final three novels.

Ascendance involves a young boy named Aydrian being trained by the elves in martial and gemstone magic combat. The queen of the Touel'alfar view Aydrian--and all rangers--as mere tools for the elves to keep tabs on the events transpiring in Corona and mouthpieces to influence those events in the elves' favor. The continued emotional neglect on the part of the elves leads Aydrian to flee their mountain-forest and seek to make a name for himself by any means necessary, thus achieving a kind of immortality.

In his journey, Aydrian finds an ally with a former Abellican monk who was the right-hand man of the Father Abbot Markwart. Each believes that he is using the other for his own goals.

Jilseponie is forced to adapt to life as in the King's court. Her skills with gemstone magic and ties to the Abellican monk from the first novel, The Demon Awakens, immediately turn some of the court against her. Their fear is, of course, that she got into the King's good graces in an attempt to reestablish the Abellican Order's control over Honce-the-Bear.

Transcendance occurs simultaneously with Ascendance, but in a different part of Corona. In the southern desert region of Behr, a violent religious group has seized power and brought the whole of Behr under their theocratic rule. A female ranger raised and trained alongside Aydrian--her name is Brynn-travels with her elven mentor and friend to Behr.

There she allies herself with a faction fighting against the theocracy and soon gains the support of the oppressed Behrense people. In the end she manages to forge an alliance with one of the Doc'alfar dark elves and a dragon which aid her greatly in bringing to light the evils of the theocracy

Immortalis involves Aydrian taking control of Corona through martial might and sending his men into Behr to force an alliance to his side. Meanwhile he returns to the elven mountain-forest to get revenge on the elven queen for the way she treated him and lied to him about his parents abandoning him. Midway through Aydrian begins questioning the morality of his actions. Unfortunately a small band led by Jilseponie Wyndon and others who remained loyal to her set out to stop him at any cost.

The culmination involves a massive battle between Aydrian, Jilseponie, Elbyan, and the dark side of ambition--fostered by the elven queen's treatment of Aydrian-- that infected Aydrian's heart.

Its an amazing epic set in a world of Salvatore's creating. It features his fluid battle scenes with better and deeper characterization than his Drizzt novels. I wholeheartedly recommend this series! I have tried to dodge spoilers in the summaries. :)
