R&B Haters

Yes, just like Bill Cosby and Chris Rock are unoriginal 'cause their ancestors never had stand-up comedy.
Ultimately they're just regurgitating Jewish Vaudeville.

Old Scool R & B is ****ing kickass:

Stevie Wonder
Bob Marley
Barry White
Sam Cooke
The Supremes
The Temptations
The Four Tops
Kool & The Gang

I can go on for hours.

Modern R & B, however, is no different from a lot of rap. It's basically rambling on and on about sex and ass to me.

Word. I love the old school R&B. That stuff was innovative and took some serious musicianship to play it. The new stuff requires a voice pitch correction machine, a model-esque "singer" who can dance, and a music track from a standard library of 12 basic songs for them to perform over. It's karaoke with coreography. :down

I don't believe that modern day r 'n b, especially commerical r n b is anything more than extention of pop music, same goes with rap. Once it hits the charts and becomes mainstream then it becomes more of a pop act.

Maybe it's due to nostalgia but i always preferred the era of r 'n b in the 90s compared to pretty much anything that has come out in the last 7 years or so.

I mean really, can any song of this era compare to blackstreet's No Diggity?

voila for your enjoyment

meh, all you have to really do is compare usher in my way to the way he is now which is complete garbage, yet it is his modern day reputation and songs that has produced his worldwide fame (as a pop artist).

in short, i like proper modern classicr 'n' b, not the stuff that eventually becomes another pop fad song

bell biv devoe's poison > blackstreet's no diggity

anyway, i don't judge any music by its genre. some of it's good, some of it's crap... no matter who's singing it.

When love is not together from the heart

It's driving me out of my mind
That's why it's hard for me to find
Can't get it outta my head
Miss her, kiss her, love her, wrong move you're dead

That girl is poison
Never trust a big butt and smile
That girl is poison poison

If I were you I'd take precaution
Before I start to leave fly girl
You know 'cause in some portions
You'll think she's the best thing in the world
She's so fly, she'll drive you right out of your mind
Steal your heart when you're blind
Beware she's schemin', she'll make you think you're dreamin'
You'll fall in love and you'll be screamin' dreamin'

Poison deadly moving it slow
Looking for a mellow fellow like DeVoe
Getting paid laid so better lay low
Schemin' on hots my end the pro show
The low pro hot should be cut like an afro
See what you're sayin' huh
She's weighin' but I know she's a loser
How do you know me and the crew used to do her
Poison (x20)

I was at the bar shake shakin' takin' 'em off
And that night I played the wall
Checkin' out the fellas the highs the lows
Keepin' one eye open still clockin' 'em
Still one particular girl that stood out from the rest
Poison as can be how how is she
Michael me and see and I'm runnin' the show
Bell Biv DeVoe ha-ha ha-ha

It's driving me out of my mind

Poison X 20
I could name 50 different favorite parts of that song.

I know when I talk to my woman, I must say girl at least 20 times in the span of a 4 minute conversation.

I've never once paid attention to the lyrics in "Poison", other than the chorus because that's the only part I can clearly make out

I still love the song :o

Poison pales in comparison to this BBD classic:

Take a look at me
Tell me do you like what you see
Do you think you can
Do you think you can do me

Kiss me pretty, baby
Touch me all over
Girl, what makes you think you can do me
Do you think you can do me, girl

Do me, baby (Ho...ooh...)
Do me, baby (Do you think you can)
Do me, baby (Do me)
Do me, baby

Girl, let your hair down
Take off your clothes and leave on your shoes
Would you mind if I looked at you for a moment
Before I make sweet love

Backstage, under age, adolescent
How ya doin', “Fine,” she replied
I sighed, “I like to do the wild thing”
Action took place
Kinda wet, don't forget
The J, the I, the M, the M, the Y, y'all
I need a body bag

Do me, baby (Oh...oh...oh...)
Do me, baby (You can do me when you wanna do me)
Do me, baby (Yeah...yeah...)
Do me, baby (Mmm...ho...ho...ooh...yeah...)

Do me, baby (I like it in the morning time, yeah)
Do me, baby (Sometimes I love it in the evening, baby, yeah)
Do me, baby (Can you do me all over, girl, yeah, yeah)
Do me, baby

The time was 6 o'clock on the Swatch watch
No time to chill, got a date, can't be late
Hey, the girl is gonna do me
Move to the Jacuzzi, ooh, that booty
Smack it up, flip it, rub it down, oh, no

Do me, baby (Yeah...)
Do me, baby (Oh, baby, I like it just like that)
Do me, baby (And I love the way you do it to me, baby, yeah)
Do me, baby (Oh, move just a little bit closer)

You can do me in the morning
You can do me in the night
You can do me when you wanna do me

You can do me in the morning
You can do me in the night
You can do me when you wanna do me

Oh,, come on and sweat me
Will you just take a little bit, yeah

That's the way I like it, baby
Come on over here
Let me caress your beautiful body
Kiss you from head to toe
I'll make you sweat, yeah
We're gonna train up in here all the way
9 to 5, baby
You just sweat, baby
That's the way I like to do it
Run you all over with some hot oil
And just watch your body shine

I just wanna
I just wanna lay your beautiful body down by the fireplace, baby
And make love to you all, all night
Oh, yeah
I love you, baby, yeah
Oh...ho...
Oh, yeah

Smack it up, flip it, rub it down, oh no, indeed.

You are so right, jag, especially on the musicianship element. The Funk Brothers are so underrated. And a lot of the music, especially Wonder, Gaye and Marley, had a social impact as well as a musical impact.

Sure it's easy to say noneofya Really know, but the '80's were the best for Modern Rhythm & Blues.
HELP ME..

The '90's brought some heat too.

Ricky Bell could blow- "I APOLOGIZE, tell me what to doooo..somethin ME AND YOU" poison was the most played song on the album and should'nt have been thou.

I'M SO CONFUU HUSED..OHHH. and i don't know what to do baby!!"

Look at the horn lines Earth, Wind & Fire and The Commodores used. The bass lines that James Brown had anchoring his music. The sheer emotion of singers like Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding or Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergrass. Aretha Franklin puts all the so called "divas" of today to utter and complete shame. And you're correct about the lyrics those artists were penning in their songs, too. They actually had something to say about the socio-political climate. Then again, they actually wrote most of their own music and lyrics; another thing that separates them from todays R&B "artists".

Oh, absolutely. There's probably some good R & B out there today, but I think a lot of it is not very popular. Then again, so is most of the good music of today.

Yes they do, there ballads and groove songs were tight...as long as you don't ever...EVER mention Ronnie Devoe, he rightly should be bagging groceries right now.:cmad:

I really don't know of many artists kicking R&B old-school style like we've been talking about. It's a shame because it's such a great genre. Interestingly enough, though, the new Audioslave album is HEAVILY influenced by that type of music (most notably Earth, Wind & Fire minus the horns). I've never been a big Audioslave fan, but this new album is outstanding.

Now, people hating rap and hip-hop is somewhat understandable. But why do some people hate R&B, I mean it's just singing.

I find that some people who listen to Hip hop generally dislike R&B. Probably because they feel that it's "hard" enough or whatever. R&B, like hip hop is in a comatose state because too many artists, nowadays, like to incorporate oversaturate hip hop into their music. The latter reason explains why some folks are annoyed with R&B music today.

There are diamonds in the rough however.
