there's supposed to say things like "how's the jigga-man gonna afford his bling" and "whoomp there it is" and "I have had it with these mother f**kin snakes on this mother f**kin plane" and "neo, I want to tell you about the matrix" :o

While it's nice to hear that I have nice grammar, I do get insulted when someone tells me I'm so well-spoken and I speak so well, I don't even sound like a black(yes, I have gotten this on the phone before.) Even compliments can be insults when it comes to stereotypes. Black guys are good at sports and have big *****. Yes, I'm sure that looks like a good stereotype to have, but apparantly my athletic prowess and giant cock also mean I'm dumb as a bag of hammers. I'd rather be smart than good at sports.

Question is, how important is having a big cawk? :o

I intended to post in this thread earlier, but I got distracted when I went outside to smoke some weed and drink a grape soda.

As a black man who used to live in a predominantly black 'hood, and currently lives in a predominantly Asian suburb (shout-outs to Yin-Kiu and Xue! Run that s***, dong ma?), I pretty much grew up learning to make fun of stereotypes. Any person who uses common sense knows that you're going to run into someone whose race's stereotypes don't apply to.

One thing I struggled with in my teens, however, was knowing how to react to stereotypes directed toward me. I like friend chicken. Do I avoid friend chicken to prove the stereotype wrong, or do I eat the ****ing chicken because it's good? Just a few weeks ago, I bought a grape soda during my break at work. A white co-worker made a crack about black people and grape soda, I offered him mayonaise and called him a cracka-ass-cracka, and we shared a laugh. I'm not giving up the things I like just because a stereotype exists.

So are stereotypes true? Only for some people. I mean, I suck at sports and dislike watermelon. What's the big deal?

Now if you'll excuse me, there's a rerun of Good Times on TV...

So, do you believe that some racial stereotypes may be true?

The concept of race is pseudo science. It's classifications were born of ethnocentric thinking and lack of empirical data several hundred years ago. These ideas were nonetheless institutionalized and subsequently created countries and generations of misunderstanding.
Race exists only exists in the cultural sense. There is not one shread of scientific evidence where skin tone is inherently tied to moral code or intelligence. Thus, all racial stereotypes-both positive and negative--are false.

yes, cultural stereotypes are often true, racial stereotypes are not.

But they usually fall into the same category...if you're white, you're more likely to be middle to upper class, and if you're poor you're more likely to live in a trailer park than a ghetto. See my point here?

I have seen plenty of poor white people as well as plenty of middle class black people. Stereotypes is usually breed from ignorance. Some People feel the need to people in a box and say that they are this certain way or that certain way, but people aren't always so prodictable. I am sure you all have qualities which people who don't know you very well will associate with you based purely on the way you look, act, seem ,ect..........

Well then, you're wrong. Some of them are true. Black people are more likely to commit crimes, not because they're black, but because the majority of black people have been f**ked into the ghettos and poor neighborhoods for so long that it just comes out that more of them would be criminals. I bet there's at least one or two stereotypes for every race that comes out as being true, because there's a reason that they're stereotypes. Now are they ALWAYS true? No, but they sometimes are.

What then are the percentages? If I say "______ race always does *&^%" but only 10% of them statistically do, does that then prove the stereotype? What if 50% do? 49%? 80%? At what point does it become a "true" stereotype?

I could easily say that "White man commit crimes" and it could be true... based on even a 10% "truthiness" stat.

Stereotypes are not truedue to this inherant error, the fact that anything can be true precludes them from being at all effective.

Easy credit rip-offs.

Scratchin' and survivin'.

Hangin' in a chow line.

Ain't we lucky we got 'em.

Duh, duh, good times.

How do you differentiate between those two?

Manic's explanation was a pretty good one for the most part; there are people in every race who fit the bill of their respective stereotype, but they don't apply to every person.

I just think that it's extremely sad when people buy into stereotypes about their own race(regardless of whether it Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic, Asian, A miscible of two or more, etc. . . ). It blows my mind, but I usually disregard it.

I'm Italien, I love to eat pasta and lasagna, does that make me a racial stereotype? You bet your ass I am.

**** stereotypes. I'm white, I hate mayonaise, I like grape soda, and I like big butts too. :D

Oh, and to further defy stereotypes I'm a Texan and I don't like football, but I am a big soccer fan. And also a progressive, not a homophobic knuckle dragger.

I know what you mean, its like the attitude you find sometimes where if you're a young black guy and studious, you're made fun of for being "white". Whats white about being intelligent?

Or another example: I think a lot of white people who have prejudicial ways of thinking are the way they are because they gave into the social pressure from their white peers to be that way. Its sad, but I think this happens with Southerners a lot, especially behind closed doors(new south my ass). I've unfortunately seen it first hand, and I've given those people some serious **** about it too.

Yeah, I've seen and experienced examples of this. One of my best friends tried to date someone out of his race (he's 1/2 caucasian and 1/2 puerto-rican), and his folks put a stop to it immediately when they saw the the relationship was serious. (pretty funny because the guy's in his late 20's, living on his own, and fairly independent)

I'm no expert on interracial dating, but I have nothing against. It was just a shock to me because his folks are so polite and understanding, yet they advised their son to stop dating this girl because she was Asian. His mom even had her own ideas about rating races like it was a Monopoly board game or something. I attempted to grasp the thinking behind it, but as you said, I think they were going for more of a societal perception that their son should marry another caucasian, because that's how he's received. (No one really thinks that he looks bi-racial).

I guess subtle racial discrimination has layering to it; his folks are fine w/ all of his friends of different ethnicities, but he still has to 'keep up appearances' w/ his immediate/extended family. These things rarely faze me, and most of his family, extended or otherwise, doesn't share this view, so it's not a big deal to me. Still, it does make you wonder.

My mother used to chase away all of my older brother's Mexican girlfriends. Since then, I've made it personal policy not to tell my mom when I'm dating at all.
