Rann/Thanagar: Holy War and Reign in Hell

I always liked Asmodel's design, particularly when he was introduced. Nobody ever seemed to draw him as well as Porter did, but he's still got a very unique look when compared to most other comic characters, especially Neron (who could use a redesign).

Yeah, Neron does look pretty stupid and generic for the lord of Hell.

Oh I dunno, the Spectre is halfway there and he's all decked out in greens...

Not yet, but can you believe that The War That Time Forgot is going to be TWELVE ISSUES? DC gave Bruce Jones TWELVE ISSUES?

Who sat in an editorial meeting and said, "Hey, let's give Bruce Jones free reign with all of our characters that aren't from the present-day DCU, for twelve issues, and make them go to war in some time-displaced island, and SEE IF IT SELLS LIKE HOTCAKES!"?

God almighty... That first issue of Reign was just about a chore to read. The only redeeming part was the Dr. Occult story.

I can't believe that my subscription for Shadowpact was replaced by this...

I tried to get into Holy War, but just couldn't. I dunno, there must be some contingent out there that still really loves Starlin's style, but it bores me to tears.

I'm a Stalin fan but I'm finding Holy War a bit forced.

Read last weeks Reign in Hell #2 today and colour me impressed.

I have a feeling Giffen is really going to kick ass on this - it might not be as big as Annihilation was for Marvel but I think it's going to go a long way towards the Mystic rejuvenation that we've been asking for a while.

I love how many characters are packed into the story and I love how the war genuinely feels ... real almost. What each side is offering the condemned and the reasons for the power struggle really feel well thought out to me - and at this point it's still hard to pick a side.

Even Billy felt like that character I know.

Did anyone else pick up the Hawkman Special tie-in issue last month? I'm surprised no one's brought that up yet, because it seems to have caused a buzz of some sort at most other comic book forums. For those unaware, it basically says
that Carter's not really Carter but Katar with Carter's memories.
I don't really know what to think about this turn of events myself. If it's legit, though, then if nothing else it seems unnecessary.

That's nice. I'd have to actively work my way up to not caring about Hawkman, so complete is my indifference to him. If not for Trinity, he wouldn't even exist, as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah that was pretty stupid. I'm glad everyone else is ignoring it and hope they continue to do so.

The fact that he thinks "HAY GUYS WE GONNA RETCON HAWKMAN AGAIN" is some sort of genius idea for improving the character is the exact thing that's turned me off Starlin in these past years. Almost all his stories have had some kind of variation on this theme. Captain Comet, New Gods...the list goes on.

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but I think Johns may have ignored the idea of retconing Hawkman. If you read JSA 18's narrative by Hawkman, he does remember his former lives and one of them being Prince Khufu. It didn't mention a guy that took away those memories or say it didn't happen like in the Rann/Thanagar: Holy War storyline.

True, but I took that as Johns simply having scripted JSA #18 before he was even aware of what Starlin had done in the Special. Communication between DC's editors and writers is clearly shoddy anyway, so I would never expect a change involving a character as relatively minor as Hawkman to be reflected in any other titles he's appearing in in the same month. If there are any real repercussions from the Special, I wouldn't imagine seeing them addressed around the rest of the DCU until Holy War has concluded, or perhaps not even until the storyline involving this "Aberrant Six" has wrapped up. Assuming it hasn't by the end of Holy War, that is.
