I’m fascinated by this. So far the audience seems to like it while critics don’t. Definitely sounds like Marvel tried something different, at least for them. Hopefully the critic reviews don’t stop them from experimenting more.
I'd say the audience so far is 60/40 liking/disliking it from what I read on here and on reddit. And for them seeing it this early, they are definitely more of a fan than the casuals over the weekend.

Just came back from the cinema and my biggest question is what the hell are these critics inhaling?
While this isn't top tier MCU (Infinity War, Civil War, etc.) it's still a damn fine movie. I had absolutely no problem following the (supposedly) convoluted narrative, the characters, their relationships and moral dilemmas were compelling, and the pacing was great. Some of the quickest two and a half hours of my life.
This is a solid 7/10 for me. Whoever says that this movie is worse than Iron Man 2, Thor 2, or Man of Steel, needs to rethink his life choices.
I just finished this, and I have to say I really like it! Compared to recent blockbusters I see in theaters I prefer it to Dune, Shangchi and Bond. Compared to (fairly) recent MCU movies I prefer it to Black Widow, SM:FFH and AMatW. More than 2.5 hours literally flew by and I didn’t check the time at all, while I checked the time about an hour into Dune and Bond. The story is fast-paced and engaging, before going in I heard there were complaints about over-exposition, but I think the exposition was already “dumbed down” and was essential to the plot, not like some confusing philosophical stuff. I was on the edge of my seat almost all the later half of the movie, because
at any moment characters hug each other I can imagine one of them will materialize a weapon and double-cross the other, and any character can die in the middle of a fight
(the last time I had that feeling during an MCU movie is during CA:CW I think).
The violence of this movie is a bit too much for me
(too many tentacles/ weapons piercing body parts from front to back)
, but other than that the fights were fairly standard MCU CGI-fest. One thing that is really refreshing is that there’s no gratuitous shirtless scene, which I really appreciate (I kind of always rolled my eyes at those scenes in other MCU movies). Even the scene that is considered “brief sexuality” is more sensual and classy rather than sexy, it highlights the love and deep connection between the two rather than the gratuitous softcore pornography that is quite popular nowadays (close-up abs shots and loud moans and exaggerated climax faces like, say, in Bridgerton).
I saw this in 3D IMAX, and I don’t think I will see it in theater again. It says more about me than about the movie, I no longer enjoy seeing movies in theater like I used to and I’m not willing to sit still for 2.5 hours just to see something I have seen before.
I think this movie needed a Denis Villeneuve type director. I'll give my full review and score when I see it a second time but for me its bottom tier MCU. Not as bad as Black Widow or TDW, but slightly above.
It's am outlier in the MCU that's for sure. I think the reason some critics are even giving it a pass is because it's in the MCU. I think had this not been in the MCU, critics would have a field day with this.
It should have been a 6-8 episode D+ series focusing on each period of time.
Oh boy where to start with this movie. I can only imagine what this could have been in the hands of someone as talented as Denis Villeneuve, especially since this shares so many similarities with Dune, but man they could not be further from each other in terms of quality and it mostly comes down to the execution.
I felt this was the polar opposite of everything Denis did right with Dune from the world building, the handling of the characters and most importantly your investment in the story. I know some people found that movie too boring or too slow at times, but I can't imagine how those same people would react to this.
I absolutely hated how this movie was structured and paced and how almost anytime it felt like it was gaining some nice momentum you'd get some random exposition dump that completely ruins it.
To make matter's even worse is the lack of energy or personality injected into this by the cast. Outside of Don Lee, Brian Tyree Henry and Kumail Nanjiani I could care less about any of these characters.
Hell I got more of out Kit Harrington's five minutes of screen time than I did almost anyone else in this and I'm still trying to figure out what exactly was the point of the Deviants in this movie.
I don't even want to get started on how badly utilized Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek were in this who I was the most excited to see join the MCU, but seeing how badly they dropped the ball on both of their characters makes me even angrier to be honest because its such a waste of their talent IMO.
8/10; upper third of Marvel films, and a hell of a lot better than critics think.
I liked it a lot. Now, I do agree with the pacing problems… but it’s critical score is utter bullhonkey.
Or at least it is in a world where Iron Man 3 and The Last Jedi get glowing reviews… it’s definitely better both of those messes, than most Phase 2 films that were certified fresh, and it’s better than Captain Marvel and I’d argue equal to or better than Black Widow. I would agree that the rest of Phase 3 and Shang Chi are better, but not by an enormous amount.
It did the most important thing it needed to do; sell the characters first, the conflict second, amaze with spectacle third, and combine all three for an emotionally engrossing finale. There’s a major twist that gives it an edge in antagonist compared to Captain Marvel and Black Widow, while I’ll be blunt and say that most audience members are liable to grow strongly attached to at least one of the heavily featured major characters.
The pacing is it’s biggest problem, as is potentially its target audience - a fair assessment might say that it’s clearly aimed more at the “Elder Millenial” and Generation X groups rather than Zoomers (for whom it might be too long and sedate in the middle) and Boomers (if they have issues with superpower films trying to be more intellectual.)
A good description might be to say that it has the same ambitions as a Zack Snyder DCEU film… but much better and far more competent execution.
It’s not great… but it’s much better than critics are admitting,
I’ll also be honest and say that I can definitely see critics throwing shade at it for being marketed as an award-worthy film but not catering to them… but they need to stop being so full of themselves as well. Half their preferred films are forgettable tripe as well; it’s just forgettable tripe that reaffirms their jaded world view, while this film dares to still ultimately be escapist (Gasp! The horror!)
I didn't like this movie and it's gutting for me to say that as I was deep down rooting for Zhao.
There are elements I do like and I like the big twist but there are serious problems in this film.
First, I don't think Gemma was right for the role of Sersi. She looks the part but sadly I don't think her performance was there to earn another role in the MCU. I thought she was awesome as Minn-erva (who shouldn't have been killed off) so a bummer that another person didn't get a shot at Sersi.
They also really miscalculated on the use of Sprite. Didn't like her character or rather how she was used.
All in all, sad I didn't like this movie but at the same time, despite it having the lowest aggregate score of the MCU, I don't think it was the worst entry either. Frankly I think Iron Man 3, Age of Ultron are worse than this, among a couple others. At least this movie took a swing. Just didn't work out.
I think this actually would've worked better as a Disney+ show to really flesh out each character.
I gave it a 6
Just felt flat through the movie, it didn't build on tension for me the action scenes and exposition felt the same through out the movie. A lack of chemistry through most of the characters.
As a Marvel movie it is my least favorite, if it was a non MCU movie I think it is a fine one off hero movie.
Just got back. This is a very heavy movie, I am going to need some time to process.
Normally I do a pros and cons listed review, but for this I'm not sure how to categorize its elements under them, so I'm gonna just spell out how I feel.
- This movie is completely devoid of any Marvel "formula", it's a stretch to even call it a superhero movie, it's a Sci Fi action flick.
- This is Sersi's story, the group gets to shine, but she's the main character and she is awesome.
- The colour palate is great during the brighter scenes, but very difficult to see during the darker ones.
- The Deviants were meh.
- Considering the twist in the story, it was the right decision to make the Deviants meh.
- All of the Eternals are likeable in their own way, but Makkari was my favourite, Ajak was my least favourite.
- Makkari is the breakout character for me, she steals every scene she is in. Love her.
- The movie has very little humour - basically 1 character who delivers it.
- I'm torn on what they decided to do with Harrington's character towards the end, I liked how he was presented earlier in the movie.
- If we ever get a full fledged Superman VS Flash fight, it's got a lot to live up to.
- Didn't care for the post-credit scenes.
- I want to see more of Sersi in the broader MCU, she can be a cornerstone character for the MCU.
I'm not gonna rate the movie yet. I need to see it again. It is drastically different from your regular MCU movie.
I can tell you I did not dislike it at all, but to determine how much I liked it will take another viewing.
I gave it a 6

I HATED Thor The Dark World with The Passion of A Trillion Exploding Suns.
This would have to be the Worst Movie In The History of Cinema for me to dislike it as much as that film.

I have rewatched Thor 2 a few times and trust me it was my bottom movie until this. I hate a lot of things about Thor 2 but it has great music and Loki was pretty good. The villains in both these movies are equally bad but the Dark Elves take the worst villain still.

Just by reading initial Twitter reactions, it certainly seems Eternals is hitting more of a chord with fans than it did for the critics but there does seem to be a lot more divisiveness than in the last few years.
I liked Scottish Superman, and Kingo and Sprite added a lot of spirit to the film. However, a lot of the rest of the cast felt like dead weight until the third act.
As some others have said, in a series that could have fleshed them out.
The pacing was okay, although it certainly felt long.
Also, this movie had some great themes (e.g. relationships between mortals and immortals) that it didn't do enough with, but was also rather bleak
we only exist as "food for the gods" and humanity isn't actually responsible for a bunch of our own technological advances, that kind of pissed me off
I did like that it used elements from Gaiman's Eternals, particularly that they don't even
understand their true nature, as sophisticated robots
I'm the only human alive who seemed to enjoy Thor TDW. Not a great film, but decent fun. I would easily put TDW above Eternals for rewatch value EDIT: I still went back for a second helping though !
On the plus side, it wasn't forgettable, like the Ant Man films. On the minus side, it wasnt particularly captivating and didn't really make me give a **** about most of the characters - especially the Deviants, as generic cgi monsters
although they aren't the real villains
For a film that in its marketing made a huge deal about its diverse cast - surprisingly didn't make a big deal about it in the film itself.
The diverse cast felt organic (which shouldn't be strange, despite what Disney would have us believe diverse film casting has been happening for decades before this film) and while there was a bunch of race and gender swapping, it didn't affect the storytelling, it was just as bland as it would have been had they kept the original forms of the characters.
Although
having a deaf super android seems a bit ridiculous. I mean clearly she wasn't designed with that flaw, so that to me looks like box ticking. I may have missed if there was an explanation for her deafness ( injury or battle damage, although for immortal nearly indestructible androids that doesn't seem to make sense).
Anyway a word I've seen used to describe this film is "insipid". I think that's unfair, it's a bit bland but not utterly tasteless and not massively disappointing ( like Iron man 2).
Is it Marvel's worst film? No, not really. But itsa long way from its best.
EDIT ; After a rewatch I'm going up to a 6/10.
I enjoyed it more the second time, although the first act was a chore, but the third act actually had some pathos. Really liked Ikaris even more as Scottish Superman !
For the most part, I liked Eternals. It's really hard to compare this to everything else that came before it in the MCU but I'd still consider it middle-of-the-road. I don't think it deserves its rotten rating. IMO it's a more solid film than The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and The Dark World.
My only major criticisms involved certain choices with characters, such as
Kingo not being involved in the final battle, Makkari being underused compared to the others, and Angelina Jolie just being completely wasted as Thena.
There's a lot going on in it, and if I'm being honest this might have been better received if it were a miniseries on Disney+. That way there would have been more time to fully develop the characters and not just cram so much exposition into half the movie.
I think this will probably be the most divisive MCU film moving forward. Who knows, maybe it'll be better received over time but as it is, if this is Marvel's first critical failure, it really could have gone a lot worse.
I hate-watched the ABC show. I had pretty much read all the Inhumans comics that had been published up until that point and I couldn't believe what my eyeballs were seeing. I did get some enjoyment out of how bad it was though.
Meh. I like the Inhumans and all, but I honestly think they are fairly niche. I don't think Inhumans as a film would have been any more or less successful than Eternals
GoT was big at the time. If they had released Inhumans in 2018 as originally planned and played up the royal family in space aspect then I think it could have clicked with people.
I honestly don't. Again, I like the Inhumans. I would watch an Inhumans film in a heartbeat. But as a concept, I think they are fairly niche. Not saying the movie would have flopped. I think it would have done lower end of a pre-pandemic MCU film. Closer to something like A&W.

Well, I personally think the Inhumans is way more interesting and cooler as a concept than Eternals. I can more easily see how Marvel can make good movie out of Inhumans than Eternals. It’s actually kind of funny, a lot of the reviews I’ve skimmed over have said that Eternals would’ve worked better as a tv show than a feature film and to me, I really think Inhumans should’ve been the one to get a feature length film, and the Eternals should’ve gotten the television show.
