I thought Cyborg was easily the "pointless" member of the league. Sure he helped in bringing Superman back, but it seemed like his role was just to stand there and attack. Cyborg's has a good backstory, but they didn't with it as much as they could have either. Didn't help that he seemed to be played so bland either.
Using a Z-lister at this point really wouldn't be much worse. They need to focus less on what villains they use, and more on treating their heroes better anyway.
I mean it seems like he had a fairly substantial role outside of reviving Superman.
- Finding where Stepenwolf's base of opperations was
- the one who actually separated the Motherboxes with the help of Superman, thwarting Steppenwolf's overall plan
- upgrading the Flying Fox to actually get to Russia before Steppenwolf completes his plan
To follow that up, the fact that he's allowed to interact with the rest of the League as peers from the jump is great. He doesn't come off as an afterthought and he's allowed to have an actual relationship with them. In the books, Batman hacks his constantly and Barry gave him a pity talk once. He's barely spoken to anyone else except here and there. Here, he and Wonder Woman bond over the fact that they are both still coping with their respective losses, he and Aquaman have a bit of tension seeing as Aquaman doesn't trust his tech, he and Barry are the "accidents" of the team and the youngest, and he and Superman bonded over the fact that they both "died" and how they don't want to die again. Ironically, Batman doesn't get much with him, but he still fact checks Batman's plans and comes up with his own strategies. It's his plan that they follow at the end. All in all, this is the treatment that he should have gotten during his first introduction to the League and it actually feels like he belongs here.
I would definitely like to see more of Ray Fishers Cyborg. I loved how, like technology, he was constantly evolving. We saw a Cyborg who had just started out and could barely control his new body, but he could potentially become more powerful than Superman since there really isnt an end to how advanced he can get. Liked how they showed at the end that he was learning how to change his appearance. Which Im sure could lead to him being able to change back into.
I honestly think Grid could be interesting if done right (playing against his fears that the Mother Box is corrupting him and making him a potential threat), but he could be used against Amazo/Professor Anthony Ivo, Brother Blood, maybe a more mystical villain if not technological.
In fact, Cyborg now has the potential to play with and expand on the Fourth World mythos. He's basically a human mother box! He can control boom tubes with his mind, not to mention the fact it is constantly upgrading his body. Hundreds of them at a time, all around the world, but maybe introduced the flaw that was shown in the comics. Cyborg needs a supporting cast, and they provide one. Vic could be helping entire civilizations evacuate dying planets, making first contact with digital life-forms, and stopping the Evil Factory from turning entire cities into armies of undead Parademon monsters.
