Justice League Re-cast Hal Jordan for JL movie? Yay or Nay? - Part 1

Karl Urban or Jensen Ackles would both be great. I definitely wouldn't mind Bradley Cooper in the role, but he may be too big at this point... unless the role is ridiculously well written.

And I agree about Hugh Jackman, I was just thinking that the other day. Hal needs to be a young Harrison Ford type, and Hugh Jackman immediately came to mind. Hugh would've been PERFECT

America is the prime market for huge budgeted superhero movies. The Dark Knight made 534 million in North America alone, and 469.7 everywhere else. It doesn't really matter how exposed GL is where you are, what ultimately matters box office wise is how familiar America is with him. And if the next GL appearance is solid, the past won't even matter anymore. All they will know is the Snyder GL, seeing as nothing before will have made much of an impact on most of the world. He still hasn't entered the public consciousness like WW, Supes, or Bats. No doubt.

"It used to be the case that the US box office was the be all and end all for commercial success. But, for recent superhero movies, the US typically accounts for no more than $4 out of every $10 made."

- Linda Yueh

Besides which, that isn't the matter in debate. The original pronouncement that we are busy refuting was that an unfamiliarity with GL is evidence of a lack of intellectual curiosity. No geographic boundary was put on that silly notion.

I don't know where you are exactly, but I know Wal-Mart operates in the UK, all over North America, Africa, and parts of Asia. Target is smaller, but they operate outside the US as well.

You will not find a Wal-Mart within these shores. Wal-Mart's presence is limited to running Asda as a subsidiary. Asda was a British chain for many years, and the takeover has done nothing to really change it. Wal-Mart probably realise that attempting to sell a lot of culturally American-centric merchandise in their UK outlets would not be very succesful, so they don't. American comics have no presence in them, apart from via Marvel movies stuff.

I imagine the same it true of other domiciles, too. The idea is to sell people what they want to buy. That is probably why the JLA has some kind of retail presence in American supermarkets.

While I'm not familiar with European bookstores, are you telling me they are free of comics sections?

No, but they are rather meagre, and tend to be frequented only by people with a strong interest already. You can tell, because these people usually have sub-culture appropriate T-shirts. I have never seen a GL graphic novel in a UK bookstore, nor a French bookstore, nor a Spanish bookstore. Maybe GL is massive in Luxembourg? Who knows.

Moreover, did you get no promotion of JL:Flashpoint and JL:War? I saw countless displays for those and numerous TV spots.

I didn't see any, no.

And did the GL movie fail to premiere in Europe even with an English actor hailed by critics as giving the best performance?

Not much. It didn't do very well here, and those that were aware of it are unlikely to remember it now, or know the titular character's name. Those who went to see it will no doubt just have the impression that GL sucks.

So given that GL has permeated mass media like this, it only stands to reason that a person would have to be purposefully isolated to have never heard of DC heroes beyond just Supes and Bats.

Perhaps if you live in the US and enjoy comics, otherwise I disagree for the reasons above.

Same page bro, same page. Hugh J would have been absolutely perfect,
he encapsulates all the important aspects of Hal's character, and would have been a lot more sympathetic than Reynolds.....oh well.

Let's hope whoever they cast is good. Or if not Hal, then they pull off
a good casting coup for Kyle, Guy or John Stewart.

cheers.

I'm all for Hal. I've watched the JL and JLU shows, John Stewart is a one-trick pony. They need Idris Elba if they go that route. I'd much rather Chris Pine or even a returning RR as Hal Jordan.
Many would disagree about John. I'm not sure how many tricks Hal has, but they(like Hal) will probably never mean anything because he can't trick the GA into caring about him. Kirk to Hal would be seen as a MASSIVE step down for Pine & Reynolds doesn't even want the role anymore.
I never heard anyone ask why Green Lantern was white, he's been white far longer than he's been black. No one I know would ever ask why the character is white, that's for sure.
Thanks for sharing your personal experience. It's easy to find this stuff online tho. I've even heard reports on this forum from people from around the world saying the same.
John Stewart isn't interesting at all to me, Hal is the far more interesting character IMO. It's all subjective though. Obviously you prefer John Stewart, I find the character to be next to worthless to be honest. You say that John Stewart has made the character more popular than ever, I disagree but the reality is, if the character of Hal Jordan wasn't able to make the character popular in the first place, there never would have been a John Stewart.
I'm not sure about that. IIRC sales weren't too spectacular before John was created. I think that's why John was created. They wanted to shake things up and Hal was easily replaceable. That's why they were able to make John work so well on JL/JLU. They used him instead of a guy that wasn't important enough to be missed by most people.
I am only speaking for myself, but a Justice League movie without Hal Jordan as Green Lantern doesn't make sense to me but I also know I'm not alone in that thinking. I think if it was possible to have a poll, consisting of every Green Lantern fan all at once to ask who is the definitive Green Lantern character that Hal Jordan would win in a landslide.
It's nice for you to think that. I've seen Hal get his ass handed to him by John more often than not in the polls I've seen. John normally wins big and the one time I've seen him lose, it was by a small margin. Considering how much WB/DC's tried to shove Hal down our throats & how little they've promoted John, it's quite telling. If the WB/DC's GL plan was working, things would be the exact opposite, and Hal would mean something to people outside of the comics fanbase.
I assume you're right about the monetary issue for Howard, I never tried to find out why he was recast, I was just thrilled that he was because I think Terrence Howard is an extremely overrated and awful actor. I'll never understand why people think otherwise.
I'm not gonna debate your opinion on this, but it would be better in the future to do a lil' research before making statements like you did.
It's possible that some actors would shy away from the role because of how poor the Green Lantern movie was but I think that there will definitely be actors interested in the role because of it being a Justice League role. The Justice League movie will come with alot of hype and fanfare before it hits the theaters, obviously the product on screen itself will be the major determining factor in the end but it will have alot of hype going in. You may be right but I doubt it, I think those actors wouldn't have a problem attaching themselves to a Justice League movie. Now, if it was only for another solo project, I would agree, then it may be troublesome getting a bigger name.
The 2 main roles have already been cast. I seriously doubt any A-list names are in a hurry to play a B-list character that already failed so astronomically, Justice League or not.
Honestly, in terms of a solo project, it's always going to be hard to sell the Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, John Stewart or otherwise. It's just not that great of a character and it comes with alot of cheesiness. The ring, the lantern, the ridiculous oath, the weird aliens, the powers, they're all just kind of corny to be honest. Green Lantern is best suited to just be a part of the Justice League when it comes to the big screen, on it's own the character just isn't really all that marketable outside of comic book fans. I don't think it will ever take off as a solo franchise.
I actually agree w/some of this. I've been saying it for a while. The concept IMO is a hard sell. I think to pull it off, you need the least cheesy character they have. One who's interesting and cool enough to keep the audience focused long enough to get used to the concept. One need only to look at the silly mask and gloves to know that's NOT Hal. Hal has a loooooong history of meaning nothing to non-comic book fans despite being promoted often. John only needed one shot to get a non-comic book buzz going. It's messed up because now that they've already put the worst foot forward by using Hal & Hal got the response from the GA that I always knew he would, even a good GL movie w/a cool GL might fail.
While few may have a preference, I honestly don't think the general audience will care which Lantern shows up. Whatever decision won't stop people from watching a movie with Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman in it. Toss in Cyborg with maybe Aquaman and the Flash or whoever and even if it's the worst movie ever made, people are gonna go out and see it.
I agree that the film will make money regardless, but I think they'll make more money w/a team absent of the guy w/one of the most expensive live action debut film flops ever. He won't add to the box office(will probably do the exact opposite) & I honestly think John could.
I'm laughing at how much people overestimate John Stewarts impact on the general audience. Lol get a grip
IIRC you didn't realize John had any fans until you saw him kicking ass in those polls. As for overestimating impact on the GA, this is much more hilarious [YT]qRrCIvw8DRQ[/YT] :awesome:
Maybe GL is a really huge deal in the US?
Nope. It's clear that WB/DC wants Hal to be, but it ain't working out too well for 'em

Filth, foul, and profanity...that is one terrifying scenario. I can't imagine bookstores where comics from around the world aren't at my fingertips. If I want Dylan Dog, Diabolik, Blacksad, etc, they are readily available. The last time I was in B&N, they had two whole shelves of various Manga titles. The very idea of only having access to comics from my own country makes me want to hide under my bed covers.

Please recast Hal Jordan. I didn't want Ryan Reynolds but had high hopes for him...and then gave that meh performance.

Still waiting for that GL movie that captures the awesomeness that is the Corps.

We are well served by specialist stores like Forbidden Planet and any number of independents, instead. You can get anything from those. But they tend to be frequented only by people with an existing interest; the full scale Xenemorphs in the windows must shoo people away, or something.

I just hope that Geoff Johns leaving the Lanternverse doesn't effect John Stewart's chances of getting a spot on some live DC production at some point. Sales have fallen dramatically since GJ left, with John, Kyle, and Guy's titles flirting with dangerously low numbers.

I was thinking about this off and on for awhile.
You mention green lantern corps sales were getting lower.

The other green lantern book too and the red lanterns.

The first green lantern book with hal is sales is still high enough for DC,OF COURSE THESE OTHERS I MENTIONED TOO.

Some say the number is 20,000 for DC, then the comic gets cancelled but i think that number for DC is about 11,000 to 10,000.

That's what happen to static shock and some others and now for batwing and birds of prey.

Of course i don't think green lantern corps sales would get that low,but who knows.
Anyway here is the difference how Marvel do things and DC.
There is alot to read below but it's worth it.
So folks take your time,or read some of it if wish and come back later or read over time.

I know I'm way behind the curve, but I just watched Batman: Under the Red Hood last night for the first time and due to his voice-over work in that movie I like Jensen Ackles for Green Lantern even more. The way he did his voice for that movie would be great for Green Lantern in my opinion, he was alittle less gruff than he is in Supernatural and I think it would work great for Hal Jordan. Bradley Cooper and Ackles are my top 2 for Hal now. Though it will probably be someone no one's thought of as usual.

Can all of Mace's lengthy spam be deleted?

DC Comics' Cancellation Culture

I think we need to talk more about this and someone needs to start a new thread.

Don't worry too much about it, it's not as if you are derailing a thread pertinent to a current project. The links brought up some good points. DC wants to turn a quick buck while characters are hot (see Larfleeze), but the company hasn't done so well in establishing healthy, long-term titles.

As for the thread title, IF (big *IF*) the rumors are true, GL will have a new actor when he comes back for JL/ GL&Flash.

Marvel has some major problems too,of course not as much as DC but i have some problems with them too.
Anyway it seems for both dc and marvel if comic book sales go down below 16,000,most likely that book is getting Canceled or maybe relaunched.

Some comics they seem to want to really work so they hold out abit like batwing and static shock i think, but for DC NEW52 AND MARVEL NOW the norm seems to be around 16,000 /15,000 sales or below 17,000/16,000 then cancel or maybe relaunched time.

He-man sales for dc is much lower then superboy, birds of prey etc.. on the sales chart i was reading over the days recently but that comic is not apart of THE new 52 .

So i guess books that are not apart of the new52 and marvel now are exceptions.

They are a few comic books THAT do not get canceled OR
CANCELED RIGHT AWAY depending on the book i guess,so they like i said there could be exceptions to the rule.

Sales for most comics were lower on average in april anyway it seems.
The new spiderman comic to some extent may have something to do with that.

Hey on a related note. Even though the Earth 2 creator has walked away,
Earth 2 is still in good hands. I met Tom Taylor 2 weeks ago when he was
down here for a convention. That guy's done some great things with the
title - especially his version of evil-Superman.

On that note, the INjustice:Gods among us is probably still going strong.
It's a good book, things just get crazier and crazier.

It's sad if DC has that tendency towards cancellation, but I like what they're doing with the various Superman books - especially Superman/Wonder Woman

I'm a bit behind on Batman though. Last thing recent that I read was the Court of Owls/ City of Owls, which was awesome.

How did Forever Evil sell ?

Check out the comic sales websites.

I just read something about comics sales in this link from someone.

Sergyanime14

It think it might be slightly worth noting that Comic book readers as a whole may be growing and we don't even know since Digital comic sales aren't tracked in the sales records. I know it still be a massive minority but it may be growing.

I don't know if this is true or not but i will have to look more into.

Wouldn't mind seeing Jensen Ackles as Green Lantern. Karl Urban would make a great Hawkman.

I wouldnt mind Ryan back, I think the guy should get a better chance to shine, in a better movie basically. I preffer to see him as Deadpool again, but seeing him next to Henry and Ben would be a perfect fit. And a familiar name for the audience too, so..... why not?

if not him, Bradley, Ryan Gosling or someone in this vein would be pretty fine. I just want a familiar name for Green lantern, instead of someone from a random show or movie.

Ryan Reynolds would be a valuable asset to the JL movie. I still think he could be a great Hal if given the chance, but his connection to the 2011 film will prevent him from coming back

Bradley Cooper is pretty much perfect if they want a big name, but I wonder if his involvement withMarvel would prevent him from being cast .
