Reboot: Character Portrayal

Clark Kent shouldn't be cool nor should be a clumsy idiot.

He should be an average, "shy" guy -- a tool for Superman to fight crime that hides behind business suits and the law --- to expose them. The original purpose of "Clark Kent" was to work at a newspaper so he could get information where Superman is needed in time. But since his powers grew a lot, this fact has to be dropped and substituted with something else. See above.

I love your new avatar. I have that book in my collection.

So I was watching True Blood tonight, and it hit me. I'd really like to see a Clark Kent that is pportrayed in a similiar manner to the Sam Merlotte character, with the appropriate changes and more of a sense of humor.

I can kind of see it. I think I'd like him to be just a touch more reserved than Sam.

But, since you bring True Blood up, picture Eric as a good guy but with the same strong sense of purpose. How about that for Superman?

How many people really know what Clark Kent looks like? He lives in a world with a Lex Luthor, a Superman, various rampaging maniacs pretty much daily! How many people are going to to stop and look at Clark Kent, whether he's bumbling or not. I always liked how they put it in Batman/Superman when Supergirl got there and their looking at the Superman memorial statue, this majestic brilliant gold statue of this larger than life character with the most straight forward symbol of our nation and all the ideals that we hold near and hope to spread to world perched on his forearm and she looks at him and says "This is how they see you?", "no wonder they never figured it out".

Frankly there is no reason why Clark Kent needs to be anything but an average man. He should be clumsy, we all are. He should be goofy, we all are. He should be shy, most of us are. That doesn't mean he can't be sarcastic or funny or charming. It just means he should appear normal. Yeah he puts on the glasses as a distracting feature, he changes his body language, he weakens his voice. He does after all work in the bull pen at one of the top newspapers in the country, not only that but he's one of the star reporters of that paper. Those people are the professionals at sniffing out the news but even they seem him as if he were a god. He is omnipresent to them. They have no reason to suspect he is ever anyone but Superman. They trust him completely. The believe in him. To them, to everyone, Superman could never be Clark Kent.

I couldn't have said it better. But when you say change his body language tell me you do mean act all slumped over and such. I think one of the things Smallville has done the best is how Clark is shown. I mean like in the episode where people are telling Chloe the truth because she was infected with a Krytonite powered truth serum(spelling). Pete is telling her about him and Clark watching sometype of game and that Clark is gonna run all the way to Metropolus to get them hotdog at the stadium. And Clark gets nervous and kinda gives Pete this look and kinda rolls his eyes and is like lets go Pete. Thats how I see Clark acting. Insted of being all slumped over and such I would rather see him react with facial expressions and such. And have Superman be portrayed as having no expression when talking with a villian, but when it comes to the public have him show some emotions but not like Clark would.

In my honest opinion I do not think this version of Clark Kent should act like the Donner/Singer Clark Kent nor should he act like the Clark Kent we got in Man of Steel/Post Crisis Clark. I think he should act more like a mix between how he was written in Birthright and how Johns wrote him.

yea like some have said mixing aspects/character traits from all eras would probably be best. have clark be who he is, superman what he does, have that toughness supes had in golden age, etc......

There is no Metropolis Clark in Smallville yet.

What you see is practically Smallville's take of farm Clark. That doesn't work out as a disguise, at all.

And how exactly is that? Describe it please.

If I recall well, Johns supports Donner/Singer takes on the character and his universe.

I would actually change one thing in particular: Clark Kent with glasses( Metropolis Clark)would just appear in the last 10 mins of the movie.

SHOCKING, HUH? CONTINUE WITH ME ON THIS.

He would just be Superman all the time for most part of the film. A man in a colorful costume who wants to save the world and bring hope to people, And, also, find out his place in our planet and where he comes from. He won't even think about a secret identity at first. Why would he need one? He is powerful, sees everything, hears everything. Until some bad stuff happens through the course of the movie, particularly the end... wait and see! It is a much more realistic take, So, you'll follow the whole journey before it gets to the point we all love and care wich are the chemestry and fights between Lois & Clark. This time done with justice. No Smallville BS.

Because of that, my Superman would be characterized as a much more lovely, kind, less god like person in personality. No saviour as shown in SR BS!! He would be just a man with an ideal. In fact, he would work with Lois, who would be his PR person, to find out the truth about his origins, Brainiac and "dethrone" Luthor. In th end, when Lois thinks she got the news and story, BAM! Here comes Clark, out of nowheresville with an exclusive. The rivalry and the fun begins!

Superman Starts.

Bring on the sequel!

I'm a hundred percent with you on this. I used to love those George Reeves moments where he'd give us the little wink to the camera. I know that isn't what you're referring to but, by the same token, there were times when George's 'Clark' would be saavy and aggressive but those around him wouldn't make the connection. I want any modern Clark to be the same way.

Again - it's not that Clark needs to create a 'mask' to disguise his two personnas but that the average person thinks that Superman is Superman all day and wouldn't have a need for a secret identity. Therefore, they wouldn't be looking at Clark - or anyone for that matter - as a possible 'other' identity for the man in the red cape.

Love that George Reeves Clark too!

A Superman movie with 10 minutes of Clark Kent.

The rivalry and the fun begins!... in the last 10 mins of the movie.

Not really. The fun began when the opening credits rolled. This is the story of the journey. Actually the 1st hour of the movie deals with Clark Kent and how he becomes Superman. THe other hour we deal with Superman, his impact on the world and at the same time we deal with Luthor, Brainiac and all that stuff. I don't want to tell more about it 'cause i'd be ruining things. Just wait to read it.

You guys should wait to read the script before posting stuff like that. It is actually going to be the most faithfull movie script ever written. The 1st hour of the movie deals with Clark Kent and how he becomes Superman. THe other hour we deal with Superman, his impact on the world and at the same time we deal with Luthor, Brainiac and all that stuff regarding Krypton. I don't want to tell more about it 'cause i'd be ruining things. Just wait to read it.

well i would gladly read a script u write with this idea, i was just stating my opinion that i dont think most would take this idea well.

Clark Kent needs to be a real person. Superman isn't Batman. His civilian identity isn't a mere facade that he maintains for convenience.

Let Clark be a nice, mild mannered, and polite guy. One thing that I liked about Superman Returns was that Clark's nerdy mannersims threw off any suspicions of him being Superman. Just don't go over the top with the clumsy and nerdy portrayal. Let him be the "average" guy who isn't particularly cool. However, allow him to show some personal strength as well, competing with Lois or working to expose Lex within the system.

Well I think they need to just make Clark look more like a dork. The glasses and frames need to be bigger and the way he dresses needs to be very non color coordinated and we need to see Clark wearing clothes that show that he certainly doesn't have any sort of sense of fashion. He needs to act more dopey also.
