My idea for Mysterio as a big bad was him being about 23, greasy hair, spots and pimples, geeky and general unattractive. Bullied in school to the point he almost committed suicide. But then he discovered he had a real knack for special and practical effects, puppets and animatronics, illusions etc. he fell in love with it, he saw it as his ticket out of the hell hole he called a life. And I say knack, I mean really gifted.
But on the set of one of one of the first movies he's working for he makes a mistake and accidentally horribly disfigured the lead actress. She tries to sue him and the studio, which leads to many legal feuds and Quentin actually having a mental breakdown until he gets an idea on how to avoid jail and pay the legal fees etc. By using some of his skills with animatronics, projections and illusions to rob banks and other locations. He dons the cape and fishbowl and starts robbing places.
It could lead to a number of really cool scenes like Mysterio riding a Triceratops down the streets of NYC, dragons flying about trying to attack civilians and cops. Roman soldiers and aliens causing destruction etc.
At some point, Mysterio will see he can get more from his skills and showmanship and decide he wants more than just money. He wants respect, power, to belittle all those who bullied and beat him. Eventually he straight out kills one of the guys who bullied him.
It'll also provide a chance for Spidey to fight a different kind of villain, one who can be knocked out, but almost impossible to get to due to his illusions, a bit like Loki. Spidey will have to rely on his Spider-Sense and reflexes more than anything, and not just what he sees and his strength.
Mysterio would almost be the anti-Peter. A genius kid who had almost the same experiance growing up except his desperation and situation took him down a different path and further down the rabbit hole. Once it's all over, Peter sympathises with him but understands, he's killed and stolen almost millions of dollars. So he gives him to the police and suggests serious therapy.

If they go with mysterio, I hope he looks similar to his Shattered Dimensions design:

Edit: apologies for the small pic. This one's better

I think Marvel should introduce Spider-Man in Civil War, with a Winter Soldier style solo flick following depicting the aftermath of his unmasking. The movie shouldn't focus on the villain, that's what Sony did wrong with SM3 and ASM 2, but let the plot and the events that follow drive the story.

Being said the movie should be littered with villains and I mean littered. Look at Winter Soldier, you have #1. Batroc the Leaper, #2. The Winter Soldier, #3 Crossbones, #4 Alexander Pierce, #5 Arnim Zola. Now no one really brings up the Winter Soldier as being a film with multiple villains because there aren't 5 origin stories, even the Winter Soldier is established as having been active for years, and only has his origin told in flashbacks. Give Spidey the same treatment.

How about a movie where Peter fends off hit men sent from the crime lords (Kingpin being the primary antagonist), get's help from Daredevil, deals with the strains on his personal relationships, learns to regrets his decision to reveal himself to the public, and when he believes he's overcome the battle, Aunt May is shot by one of Spider-Man's lesser rogues (shocker, boomerang, etc). Then in infinity war, Peter is tempted to use gauntlet to undo his mistakes and ultimately the events of the film, reset his timeline (and most likely recast many other characters) and we're back to Kraven's last Hunt, the Black Suit Saga, etc.

A fishbowl would look ridiculous.

Though, I wouldn't mind a variation, like the SD one.

I couldn't them going with a full-on fishbowl, but I think the SD is sick! Also, I could see them possibly doing a helmet that's a bit Daft Punky:

Also, Al Pacino recently met with marvel. Could he voice mysterio? Ugg, I think I'm getting my hopes up too high

Other: Scorpion. It'd be a great way to use Jameson for something other than comic relief.

One of my ideas actually centered around John Jameson becoming Man-Wolf and he ends up getting killed somehow. JJJ then hires Scorpion because he thinks Spider-Man killed his son. Or JJJ's son doesn't even have to become Man-Wolf or something like this to go about.

I know Man-Wolf isn't an A-List villain, but this idea always struck me when I hear about Scorpion.

Don't count on Marvel using Mysterio, Shocker, or anyone besides Spidey's big three as the primary antagonist. Marvel can only produce so many films per year, they will want to use characters like Norman Osborn who can cross into their other films.

...how are they alike at all? Lizard is kind of like the Hulk, while Scorpion is some guy trapped in a suit with an unstable mentality.
Both are green and have a tail that can be used as a weapon.

Norman Osborn can be in the film without him being the Green Goblin yet. He works as a supporting character too.

I think if the deal goes through, that marvel will hold off on previously used villains, but not for as long as some people think. After one film, if marvel nails it, the GA will be hyped to see new takes on the previous villains.

I think a Mysterio/Chameleon combination would be good.

Mysterio would be the main threat, and Chameleon would work to ruin Spidey's reputation by impersonating him and committing crimes, thus getting the The Daily Bugle (and the police) against Spider-Man.

I definitely wanna see him impersonate spiderman. That's a classic storyline. Imagine him taking a life as spidey, that would be heavy.

I do want to see Doc Ock make a comeback at some point.

Seconded.

Thirded. He's my favorite Spidey villain. I just wouldn't use him in the first film. I would strongly consider him for the second. Possibly as the Master Planner.

It's probably safe to assume that, barring a Sinister Six showdown later on down the road, The Lizard and Electro are off-limits - especially the latter.

It also might be best for them to stay away from Goblins for a while (although I was always partial to Hobgolin and would love to see him). Five Spider-Man films, three of which feature Green Goblin in a substantial capacity. I know he's Spidey's arch-villain, but fans might need to resign themselves to Dafoe's interpretation for a while - awful costume or not. It's going to get to a point where they can't keep pulling from that well, for the sake of freshness if nothing else.

It's been a decade since we've seen Doc Ock, and he's arguably one of Spidey's most popular and most recognizable villains. He's due for a comeback.

That leaves us with:

Doctor Octopus
Vulture
Mysterio
Scorpion
Shocker
Kraven
Chameleon
Kingpin (Working with any of the above. Frankly, if they really want a "center of all evil" within the Spider-Man mythos, Kingpin makes a hell of a lot more sense than Oscorp).

Plenty of choices. I'd keep the symbiotes off the table for a while, but the option is also there if they opt for a Symbiotes Saga. Still, I'd greatly prefer they focus on his classic rogues first.

That would be a fun way to use him.

I read that they're considering Mysterio for the first film, possibly with Shocker. That sounds perfect to me, Shocker as the minor villain that Spidey takes down relatively quickly, with Mysterio as the primary adversary.

how on earth could Chameleon carry an entire movie? when it comes to the major stuff, he'll always be a piece of a bigger puzzle, as awesome he may be

Mysterio would be awesome though. I can't wait for mainstream movie goers to see Mysterio in a trailer and be like "so the next Spidey villain is some random sorcerer? really scraping the bottom of the barrel..."

Why not? I can trust Marvel to work around that. Even though he doesn't get that much time in TASM #1, they can show Chameleon disguising himself as Spidey and doing all kinds of damage. They could have him as the primary villain and have Kraven as someone who is introduced later. It could work great because of their relation in the comics.

I completely agree with you about Mysterio. There's just so much that can be done with him. I'll be pumped as hell the day I go into a theater to see him onscreen

I think it would be wise to go with someone like one of the Mysterios, Kraven, or Kingpin. None of those would take long to establish, like Venom or Carnage would, and we wouldn't have to see a 6th movie with a villain created by a brush with a scientific accident.
