AWIL must be the best Werewolf movie ever made(I have not seen Neil Jordon's 'Company of Wolves' so don't know if he took the RRH story in that direction. I saw the first half hour of it at a friends house b4 i had to split, and it looked v good), but I always thought Mike Nichol's 'Wolf' was a decent enough werewolf movie, definitely good, maybe even great. I mean, I don't think there was anything wrong with the film, so it was just more of a case of whether you liked the story or not.
AWIL is the second best. The original The Wolf Man circa 1941 is the same story with a few other elements of Greek tragedy (albeit less black comedy).
As for recent quality werewolf films I can only think of Dog Soldiers and Brotherhood of the Wolf, the latter of which doesn't really count. The Underworld movies are fun, but far from being good or quality beyond some great make-up effects, casting and cinematography (at least in the first two). The Wolfman of last year was visually amazing....but had a horrid screenplay, lackluster direction and a lifeless pace. Too bad because it is visually gorgeous.
Looks like Red Riding Hood is another Twilight clone. Oh well, I didn't expect anything else. I wish they went with the original title (The Girl with the Red Riding Hood) so that we could read about how it stole its title in an unimaginative way as well. I will wait for HBO now, I guess.
