Millennium’s ‘Red Sonja’ Movie Put On Back Burner Amid Bryan Singer Controversy

Millennium Films’ Red Sonja film with Bryan Singer is being put on the back burner. After the movie was on the slate last year at the American Film Market, the prolific U.S. mini-studio has told us, “the project is not on the slate at the moment and is not for sale at the EFM in Berlin.”

Embattled Bohemian Rhapsody director Singer has not been formally removed from Red Sonja, but Millennium’s statement seems to at least acknowledge the filmmaker may not be the right fit for the movie at this juncture.

I bet Singer still gets the 10 million. Millennium seems stupid enough to Pay-or-Play deal this film.

Oh, he is definitely still getting paid.

Instead of shelving the movie, why don't they simply hire another director. A woman, preferably.

So when you disagree with someone, it's easy just to call them an SJW and dismiss them all together (even if this is something really personal and proximate to that person, who works in the industry, who is a victim).

Got it.

This is the most mystifying part to me. Whether they give 100% credence to the accusations or not, why is the studio so attached to Singer given all the controversy over having his name attached?

It's stuff like this that makes me suspect he's got some dirt on producers and such, maybe guests at his creepy parties.

That'd be the smart PR damage control thing to do.

Of course, the really smart, publicity-savvy thing to do would have probably been to not hire Bryan Singer in the first place, and certainly not keep him attached while the stuff was cropping back up around Bohemian Rhapsody...

I have acknowledged that I did not know about his past, and that your point is taken. At the same time, I do not agree with him on this particular matter. Not sure what else you want at this point, but feel free to continue being offended on his behalf.

Well he was a “step up” from Robert Rodriguez.

Maybe if Batle Angel does well, they’ll go back to him.

Desperado and the first Sin City are great, but Rodriguez's later stuff wasn't up to the same level. Once Upon A Time in Mexico was bloated and self-indulgent (and basically The Johnny Depp Show), and IIRC Sin City: A Dame to Kill For flopped hard. Battle Angel doesn't look interesting to me at all.

A reported 200 million dollar budget, and an opening weekend projection of less than 25 million...it isn't looking good.

It only dawned on them now?

Not surprising. It has "expensive flop" written all over it.

It’s those freaky eyes. When they decided to make her look like a cartoon character, they doomed it. Though I don’t think it would have been a hit anyway. Looks as blah as Ghost in the Shell.

The lead in Alita looks to emote more than Scarlet, though...

This is the same fate that Wonder Woman would've met if it had been in the hands of Bryan Singer.

But conversely, imagine the potential that Red Sonja could enjoy if in the hands of someone like Patty Jenkins or another female director. Suddenly the whole outlook changes even with a female director attached.

I was wondering how far we were gonna get into 2019 before this news dropped. Said it to myself while reading the most recent allegations.

Did anyone else ever think the J was pronounced in Sonja? I did when I was a kid.

Singer definitely has one of them ''pay or play'' clause in his contract. His agent would be so dumb not to have one. It will cost them a big chunk of cash to get rid of him.

Yeah, that would do it. Kind of wish that they would realize this before that step, though.
