Reintroducing Superman: An Open Discussion

I know some disagree with this but I think it was a mistake to underplay what superman was about in SR.
For example, the line ''truth, justice, and all that stuff'' made me cringe.
I was like WTF?? It smelled of PC gone crazy.
I hope the new director has enough ballz to not shy away from that.

This is very true. Spider-Man played up all of these elements and did quite well. (the post 9/11 release and being set in NY didn't hurt either) I think with the economy the way it is, tensions overseas, etc, people might actually want a little bit of hope right now.

yup. the arguement against it is that superman belongs to the world. I say to that so what. He was raised here with the values of middle america. Why would he not be a patriot.
Its not saying america is better than your country. Not be any means. Its saying that he is proud to be an American. just like he would be pround to be a brit, canadian, or russian if he happened to be raised there instead.
MOST people are proud of the country that they're from.

I'd rather make Superman a more international figure and revert back to the old "he stands for truth and justice" line.

He would be an international figure, but he would also be proud of his homeland. Nothing wrong with that at all.
There is no way he wouldnt be proud of his country being raised up in middle america by a family like the kents. That as apple pie as it gets.
I'm sure ( if it were real life) that Jonathan would have hammered that point home.

yea i am sure there is some good way they can do the whole american deal while still making him international too.

Sure he could be patriotic. I have no problem with that. I just don't understand why he has to fight for "the American way". What does that even mean?

For such a dark character, Batman seems to shine an awful lot. :oldrazz:

Batman is a badass, of course people will ike him over Supes right now. Thats why i think, if they they want to make him popular again, they need to give Superman some sort of edge. Somebody said that Supermans personality should be compariable to pre Two Face Harvey Dents...I think this could work.

He should be like in the early stories where he was rough and aggressive. Playing with his strength a little bit.

Many people throughout the world still see Superman as an American icon. The reason he works as an international symbol of hope as well is because he embodies the classic American Dream. He is an immigrant who used his natural abilities to become Earth's greatest hero. He reminds all of us that we too can achieve that in our own lives. No we can't change the course of mighty rivers, or bend steel in our bare hands, but we can be the best we can be. He takes this American idea and uses it to help all the people of the world, and remind them that they can do that too. That the "American Dream" does not need to be uniquely American. Anyone can achieve that if they choose. Even in the face of tyranny and oppression, average people can band together and make their land a better place, with no superpowers at all. This is the "American Way." It is not the policies of the Bush Administration, or the Obama Administration, or the Luthor Administration. The American way is more than that; more than any one person, government or even country.

I have no problem with the American way part of the line but I won't cry if they decide not to use it.

As somebody said Spider-Man landing on flag poles didn't seem to hurt the movies overseas...the last movie made over 500mil.

Ya it can easily be played upon or shown in some fashion and work well.

Exactly! American Way is a great thing IN THEORY. American Way embody everything most of countries look for.

In reality, however, American Way is much different.

how would this work.

yea like i and others have said next time around the character shouldnt just be based on one take of the character like singer going for donner's take. They who ever comes on board that is should look at all the best elements brought to the character from 30s-00s and find the balance and make supes well rounded within all those eras of traits.

Why do you always keep saying 'yea' 'yea' 'yea' 'yea' in every beginning of sentence on your post?

Seriously.

True, but I would argue that the American Habit (the reality) is not truly the American Way (the ideal). Just because we're Americans (those of us here who are), doesn't mean we live by our own standards/codes. As sad as that may be.
