Reintroducing Superman: An Open Discussion

The themes of SR were just not Superman enough. It just wasn't a Superman story.

Only if WB didnt learn from their previous mistakes (a possiblity, i admit).

Really, 3 years just to make a decision about what to do. How is this rush anything?
Another poster said he hopes the film is out by 2011 to which I said, with no director, actors, composer, etc even hired yet, that would be rushing it.
Then I added in another post, i'd rather they not rush it, no matter how bad I want the film.

no, it has to be IN PRODUCTION BY 2011. It does not mean that it has to be released in 2011.

I didn't say I hoped it would be out in 2011, I said it wouldn't be impossible if WB really wanted it out that bad and were fast tracking it that quickly, then they could have it out in 2011 if they really wanted to.

What I think most people wanted and never found when they went to Superman Returns was a character who inspired us to the ultimate. Inspired us to believe in Truth, Justice and Hope. To believe that a man could fly. Not because they saw one do it for the fiftieth time on a big screen in the dark but because they watched their life, in some small measure, projected back to them. The zeitgeist can be touched and controlled. There was a man there in Red and Blue. He fought for the right thing, never wavering. Not because he's a savior but because he's not. Because he's a man trying to make due with what he's got. It may be more than what I have but he did something with his life and so will I.

Now I'm not naive, I don't believe people say these things to themselves but I do believe that subconsciously they crave them, they seek them out. It's the reason why we tell tales. I didn't walk out of Road to Perdition deconstructing things and I can't say I've even consciously caught myself reacting to it but the movie still spoke to me. The Dark Knight spoke to me, Spiderman spoke to me, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk they all spoke to me. I didn't sit there for two hours or more and not enjoy the flickering pictures and the underlying craft and messaging. I walked out a better person for having seen those movies and if not that than a more content person, a more aware person.

With all that in mind can anyone really say that it was Superman's power or his costume or his alien origins that turned people off about Superman Return's? Or was it really that it's themes weren't effective, evocative or pertinent to today?

I think you are dead on target.

It would be so great one of these days, hopefully very soon to wake up and see some official 100% confirmed, signed and sealed news on official direction, writers, and director.

Naw, if WB is really fast tracking a Superman film it'll be out in 2011 or 2012.

Well yeah, that's the deadline, but it doesn't mean that WB are trying to have it out in 2012 or can't have it out in 2011. They can do whatever they want. Just look how quickly Justice League was put together before it was cancelled.

Well yeah, of course they could have it out by 2011 if they wanted, but I still say with no director, actors, etc even hired yet (that we know of), you would have one more rush job if they hurried it for release by 2011.

I would also like to see Kryptons destruction be caused by Braniac in someway shape or form and before the destruction he "bottles up" Kandor. Perhaps after hs does this, it causes the destruction.

It would make Supermans battle with Braniac far more personal and conflicting.

Yeah it has to be personal. Superman has to hate Brainiac so much that it pushes him over the edge.

This is what could have been used in a SR sequel Brainiac could have killed his son.

it's just a weird comparison until you actually state why you think so, Fresh Prince.

Well just like in Citizen Kane you had a guy who pretty much wanted to be the man. Superman wanted to be the man again in Metropolis. Him wanting to be that guy who everyone wants to save them. Cause he had left earth for 7 years so.

In Citizen Kane you know the guy wanted power to be the man stuff like that. Same as Superman. He wanted to be the man. Not in a bad way a good way. Thats why it was not a Superman film cause Superman does not care about being the man. He cares about helping people

I think it's a horrible idea and let's not even mention the bastard.

the animated series did a great job in having Brainiac undercut Jor Els data about Krypton being destroyed.....Krypton being destroyed should be a natural disaster

just a punk who manages to get his woman taken away from him in multiple movies he's in...X-Men, The Notebook, Superman

Lois was married to that guy right? Oh well. Still dumb having a boy friend since she rarely dates and when she do its Clark/Superman.

For the purposes of the film, he pretty much was the husband. They had a kid, and lived together. They where effectively a family.
But no, they wheren't married.

So what if you do, each to their own.

Lois was married to that guy right?

No. In fact it is well explained that Lois' main problem is that he wants to get married and she doesn't.

Yeah. But now you mention, maybe the fact Superman left Earth for 6 years has something to do with it.

Lets just let Superman Returns and Donnerverse die. But lets be thankful we did not get a Furieverse Superman film again or Lesterverse movie again.
