Horror Resident Evil Reboot

THR's initial reports said it's supposed to take it back to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games, whatever that means.

My prediction: Jenna Ortega will play Rebecca Chambers, who will be the main protagonist.

He's probably playing Leon S. Kennedy.
Well, Cregger did say he really loves RE7, and this is what the protagonist looks like in the sequel:

And here’s couple other pictures of Austin Abrams:

Also, RE:7 was marketed as going back to the series’ roots, much like all the articles describe this film. And both RE7 and Barbarian share a lot of the same trappings.

Based on that, we very likely could be getting an adaptation of RE7. Honestly, thinking about the scale of the set pieces within the game, they’re all small enough, save for the very end, that it could feasibly be done on a reasonable budget.

I googled this and I’m not seeing that anywhere.

I was making a joking prediction about Ortega playing Rebecca Chambers. I should've made it more clear.

Ethan would make this very different from the other games.

I thought @TheVileOne was just joking.

Leon is one of the franchise's most popular characters so using him kind of makes sense. The problem is all the past iterations of Leon in the movies have been garbage, especially Welcome to Raccoon City where they make Leon an absolute joke and an utterly incompetent buffoon.

And you can’t really adapt RE4 without adapting RE2, because RE4 kind of requires you to have previous knowledge of Leon to be invested in his character. Also, the scale of the locations, set pieces and action is absurdly huge and would be way too big to film as a fresh restart or even just as a film period. You would need probably 8 to 10 episodes of a series to do everything justice.

That’s why I think going with RE7 would be a really smart choice from a filmmaking standpoint. Aside from Umbrella Corp being mentioned or seen in small glimpses in the background and a cameo from a past main character, it’s mostly standalone and doesn’t really require you to have prior knowledge of any of the previous games and their lore in order to enjoy it. It also wouldn’t carry any of the past film adaptations’ baggage. It’s basically just a guy going through a big, dark, claustrophobic house and various tunnels and pathways in order to find his wife and escape from a “crazy” family (are you later find out or also victims).

I mean, it’s practically a no-brainer.

Someone's a Claire fan. :o

IMHO, Cregger should be researching the Japanese prequel novel to the first game. it has this really cool, dark, grimy and grounded horror/noir detective storyline showing the initial investigation of the dead bodies found in the Arklay Mountains, and an old friend of Chris Redfield's sending him a mysterious message. Really good set up of the initial plot before the events of the first game. Has better narrative atmosphere and ambiance than all of the live-action movies, and it wasn't even written for an American audience.

I mean, I’m more of a casual fan of the franchise, but I guess you could say I’ve gained a big appreciation for the franchise through osmosis from just reading through fan wiki and watching super fans of the games do play-throughs over the past decade.

And, yes, I would say out of all of the characters I definitely fancy Claire the most. I definitely gravitate towards the whole “looks like the girl next-door but is secretly badass and can kick your ass” type. :ilv::hrt:

Leon is probably my favourite character in the franchise so him being the protagonist would be a great for people like me.

They should just do a straight adaptation of RE2. Give us Mr X and just have it based in the police station.

Problem is the previous movie gave us some of that.

Maybe its time for ScreenGems to remake the original movies, like how Capcom remade the original games.

All these movie reboots yet we still can't get a remake of Code Veronica.

DanielRPK posted on what he heard about the plot. Take it with some salt.

A new ‘Resident Evil’ movie is on the way, and it’s shaking things up with a story we haven’t seen before. According to rumors, the action kicks off with a courier who’s just trying to do his job—deliver a package to a remote hospital. But things go sideways fast when he stumbles into a full-blown outbreak. Soon, he’s battling mutated creatures left and right, fighting to make it out alive.

Hmmm…

THR reported that this will focus on the horror angle with elements of a "wilderness survival thriller."

It sounds like Cregger is going for a RE7 angle except an original scenario or something with some random schmoe stumbles onto Umbrella's experiments.

I don't think we are ever going to see the proper Chris, Claire, Jill, or Leon movie. And I can kind of understand that. They basically become superheroes and are nigh-untouchable over the course of the franchise. You can't really put them in much jeopardy or kill them. Like you are never going to be in suspense over what will happen to them.

Yeah, the problem with a near faithful adaptation of an established property is that it’s hard to manufacture any sort of tension or dread around any of the characters possibly dying because you know they’re eventually going to make it out by the end anyway.

As much as it sucks, a lot of the time it’s easier to just do an original story or something close to that set within the world of a particular franchise with new characters because you don’t know what’s going to happen to them.

It’s sort of like what they’re doing on Andor. Of course, we know Cassian is going to make it out by the end of the series, but then there’s all these other characters that were created specifically for the show whose ultimate fates are up in the air, and that’s where all of the uncertainty and suspense is derived from to get us invested.

The problem is that Resident Evil Netflix did that and it was an utter disaster. Did that whole thing with the Wesker daughters and Clone Weskers in one of the weirdest cases of miscasting ever. Don't get me wrong, Lance Reddick is a tremendous actor and he was doing some funny stuff there, but it was just...a god-awful show.

Paul WS Anderson seemed to mash up both and you know...while I think the Anderson RE movies are utter garbage, it was relatively successful for a while...so what do I know, lol.

I do think the problem though is if you do a Chris Redfield-centric movie, how do you cast Chris and like how do you actually make Chris Redfield a compelling lead character? Like you can't put Chris through the ringer like say Tess in Barbarian. How do you do the Leon S. Kennedy movie? Like if Leon isn't an utter badass, people will be ticked off. But if you start out with rookie inexperienced Leon, OK, that's a start, but you also know nothing bad can happen to Leon and he can't die. And again, the main heroes from the franchise basically became the Biohazard Avengers. Like there's a scene in Dead Island where it's all the heroes from the old games basically coming together like an Avengers team. It's fun and everything but I don't think that's what an aspiring artisan such as Zach Cregger wants to go for.

As opposed to Claire and Jill... Especially Jill. I'm shocked at how much she was thrown around and stabbed by Nemesis.
