Horror Resident Evil Reboot

I will credit Romero that he basically tried to adapt the first game and included a lot of the original game's monsters in it, but it was a bit of a clunky script. Like when I realized what they'd done with Chris and Jill, I was like...WTF is this ****?

Now, was the script better than what we ultimately ended up with and all the Mary Sue Alice BS? Fake Wesker, Fake Umbrella, cause the apocalypse, nonsensical idiocy? Yes. But on the other hand, I can see why it didn't pan out either. It probably would've been too expensive to make as well.

Having Chris and Jill be lovers, Chris is a civilian rancher, and has no idea Jill is a secret agent is f'n stupid, though. No disrespect Romero. It was stupid.
Yeah, that part of it sounds just a bit too dumb to be redeemable lol. It seems RE media has a lot of strengths but also glaring weaknesses. The best method would be someone who was familiar with the lot to pick the best parts that work well and leave out the parts that suck.

These are casting choices and happy that they're going back to Raccoon City. Really enjoyed The Strangers: Prey at Night so I'm optimistic about the director choice. If nothing else, at least it'll look great.

I will say, looking at the cast, I have doubts about it being ultra serious. The cheese will likely be in the movie.

But you know what, I’m perfectly okay with cheese. I mean this is a franchise about special commandos taking down ravenous zombies and mutants, give me over the top.

I hate when they adapt these video games or comics into movies and strip away all the fun.

That description of the Romero script makes me glad the movie had original characters instead, honestly. What's the use of having Chris and Jill if they're simply not Chris and Jill?

Well, what about the versions of Chris and Jill in the Paul Anderson films? ;)

But yes, the characters in Romero's script pretty much had nothing in common with their game counterparts.

Hey, if you stop watching before Afterlife, Jill was reasonably accurate (and the best thing about Apocalypse, not that that's saying a lot).

I probably lean more toward seriousness than a lot of players. As long as it has the feel of the games, I'd take too serious over too campy...which was itself something of a problem at least back in the Super Mario Bros./Double Dragon days. But I'm okay with it having some levity, and Kaya is a serious actress, and I care more about Claire than anyone so as long as she maintains some grounding then I'm not too concerned about some goofiness surrounding her.

I think what made the 1990s Resident Evil games was the impressive, sometimes oppressive tone. For their time, the games were very immersive. The play style was very unique. You're alone and you're stuck in these horror movie situations, but you are able to get weapons and fight your way out.

It was sort of like a game putting you into the shoes of a final survivor of a horror movie, combined with the tropes of an action hero. Plus, they were among the early 3D games that really nailed that style.

Also, with the games' tank controls, they were something that had a bit of a learning curve. You had to sort of get used to the way the game controlled. You also needed good resource management. Plus the game also had some branching pathways and alternate cutscenes depending on how you played.

The games were so innovative and unique for their times that people overlooked the cheesy bad dialogue.

No Resident Evil movie has ever captured that feeling of horror or solitude you have in the games. It's just never happened.

I don't think the first RE movie captured the feel of the horror, but I do think it looked/felt like the world of the games. It was more serious than the games, but it wasn't some ultra-sober, grounded, what if Umbrella existed in the real world sort of movie...which is why I was able to enjoy that movie at least in terms of being a Resident Evil movie, even if it was an alternate take with original characters. And I guess what I would say is that you can have far out elements, you can have unlikely outfits and humor for that matter, but if Claire is trying to find Chris or rescue Sherry Birkin the movie shouldn't be acting like it doesn't matter because "lol Resident Evil". There's a balancing act there.

I see what you mean. But even if it takes the feel of the games there has to be a tad bit of over the top-ness to it. I mean RE3 has you walking around like this:

And you’re fighting zombies and stuff.

But if there’s a fine balance between seriousness, the fun/feel of the games, then I’d be fine with it.

And I loved that awful Double Dragon movie btw lol.

The first RE was very good for it’s time imo. It tried to be its own thing but then it went off the rails with stupid nonsense. Glad there is a reboot.

That’s a pretty good cast and I am glad they are trying to stick to the story this time

Not a fan of merging the first and second game storylines, if that's indeed the case. Both storylines are too good for that. If anything it'd make more sense to merge the second and third games' storylines, given they take place at virtually the same time. I still wouldn't care for it, but it'd make way more sense.

Very true, and ideally that’s what I would like them to go for. But I won’t complain if it’s a solid action-fest with great zombie monsters and as long as they do a good job with the characters.

I don't trust the talent or creative team involved to pull that off, especially the director of 47 Meters Down.

I'm getting a fierce kick out of Neal McDonough being in this when his career the few years has been basically playing Wesker type shady individuals.....yet he's not actually Wesker here.

Damn. This really came out of nowhere and they begun filming . Like there was literally no announcement that this was coming at all. The only thing they announced was that Netflix show and the cgi film. This movie came out of nowhere . I mean they said it was coming soon but damn I had no idea they’d be shooting now

Yeah, those mansion shots look strikingly like something from the games.

There's really no evidence they are sticking to the story and will do a better job this go around yet. Not to mention it's the producers and production company of the previous movies, and the director of 47 METERS DOWN. Not the most inspiring names.

I did say trying. But the characters alone are more like the original, and they have said they are adapting the first game. Never saw any of the directors previous movies. But James Cameron's first movie was Piranha 2 so

Didn't they say they were combining the storylines of the first and second games?

The direction said he wanted to go back to the first two games. I don't know that anything was said about combining the storylines, which is a subtle distinction but possibly an important one.
