Resistance was just in the news, because of the Manchester Cathedral level, the Church of England want it removed from shops. Of course, the article was vastly misleading, basing all footage in the Cathedral, making it look like you spent more than 5 minutes in there, and making it look MUCH more violent.

Of course, a few Mother's came on after that, one stupid enough to say "We're not just fighting a war in Iraq, we're fighting a war here, with our children's minds and violent video games."

I had a similar theory actually.

Sony could cure cancer tommorow and still be hit with 7 meaningless lawsuits, 5 'Sony am doomed' articles a week, and maybe 2 or 3 things like this still happening, they're just a hate magnet now. :yay:

Church of England Considering Legal Action against Sony and Resistance the Fall of Man

Religious leaders have apparently accused Sony of "desecrating" the cathedral. Again ITV jumps in to let us know that Resistance: Fall of Man is a PlayStation 3 game "in which hundreds are killed during a virtual shoot-out inside the building". Makes it sounds like a real-life WWII documentary, or something.

Back to the story and the Church says Sony didn't ask for permission to use the cathedral and has demanded an apology and the removal of the game from shop shelves - otherwise legal action will be considered. Now that's a big ask, especially as it's one of PS3's biggest sellers. Sony has not returned calls to officials from the Church, says ITV.

It doesn't end there though. Oh no. Sony has also been branded "irresponsible" for choosing Manchester, which ITV describes as "a city plagued by gun violence". Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Rev Nigel McCulloch, said: "It is well known that Manchester has a gun crime problem. For a global manufacturer to re-create one of our great Cathedrals with photo-realistic quality and then encourage people to have guns battles in the building is beyond belief and highly irresponsible."

ITV concluded by saying that during the game "players are asked to assume the role of an army sergeant and win a battle" and that screenshots show the interior of the Cathedral "with the player's gun ready to fight; soldiers can be seen elsewhere in the nave taking aim".

We don't know what's worse; accusing Sony of desecrating a cathedral, talking about Resistance like it's real-life or describing Manchester as a city plagued by gun violence. Sound off below.

Sony called EVIL on BBC

(spoiler tags hide a level name in Resistance)

There's just been an 'article' on the BBC news about Sony and Resistance. Crappy youtube footage of someone playing the Manchester Cathedral section and shooting the aliens.

Apparently it's sacreligious and the guy was pushing Sony for an answer. They were trying to relate it to Manchester's gun crime... Sorry, nothing on the BBC website so this is all you get. Anyone else see it?

Seriously, they couldn't catch a break on a surfboard these days.

At what point does this all become a big joke? Are we there yet? It's like How Sony is in the process of being sued for the silver they use in making their Blu Ray discs, that's right only Sony, when every company that produces Blu Ray and HD DVD discs do the same thing, or Sony being sued over its use of ACSS when every company pretty much uses the same thing. heck they even say in their filling for the lawsuit that 'after the suit with Sony is over they will consider further legal action against other companies' even though Sony isn't the biggest violator of what they are being singled out for!

It's hysterical...

Good, those Heathens deserve it.

I have no problem with legitimate lawsuits or anything but the recent round on them have seemed to be really absurd. One of those small companies filling as many patents as they can in hopes of nabbing money from a bigger company, situation.

Yeah, this is a pretty ridiculous complaint.

Perhaps they can get the Honorable Mr. Jack Thompson to represent them?

Good thing the Church of England isn't in charge anymore. :p

Maybe Jack Thompson would be more successful if the Church of America was backing him... Oh, that's right, we never had a national denomination. :woot:

Very few people in England care about the views of the church anymore.

I don't mean to be offensive, but... The only reason the Church of England was founded is because the king wanted to divorce and behead his wife, and the Catholic pope said no. That's not exactly a solid foundation to build the house of God on. :o

Its true. The church of england is the product of Fatboy Henry's childish, impatient and brutal bull ***** proposals. If I'm to be honest, its a farce and everyone who ever studied Tudors and Stewarts would know too.

What're you talking about? Divorce and beheadings is a great platform for a religion! I think I'm going to start one all about those two aspects of life some day.

I wasn't going to attack the church based on how it was founded. :O

I personally don't see the problem with it. It's the theme of the game. I mean, haven't we all played the Virginia Tech Massacre game where you play as Cho? I still can't beat level 2.

But Resistance is sucky, and should be banned for that reason. Not because it's an affinity to God.

A few days back, you read here about the Church of England targeting ‘Resistance: Fall of Man’ and wanted Sony to apologize and withdraw the game as the company used the interior of the Anglican cathedral for a virtual gun battle.

Now UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has responded to complaints put forth by the Church regarding Resistance: Fall of Man, telling parliament that companies must take responsibility for the impact their products have.

During the Prime Minister’s Questions, Tony Lloyd, MP for Manchester Central, started asking his question by observing, “When large organisations like Sony find their copyright has been breached, they’re very quick to use the law.”

He added, “Would the Prime Minister agree with me then that when Sony used images of Manchester Cathedral as part a game which extols gun violence, this was not only in bad taste but also very, very insulting to not simply the Church of England, but people across the land who think it’s inappropriate that big corporations behave in this way?”

Blair replied, “I agree with my honourable friend. I think it’s important that any of the companies engaged in promoting these types of goods have some sense of responsibility and also some sensitivity to the feelings of others. I think this is an immensely difficult area, the relationship between what happens with these games and its impact on young people,” the prime minister went on.

“I’ve no doubt this debate will go on for a significant period of time, but I do agree. I think it is important that people understand there is a wider social responsibility as well as an interior responsibility for profits.”

During the past weekend, the Church of England demanded an apology from Sony for the depiction of Manchester Cathedral in Resistance: Fall of Man.

Developer Insomniac has so far declined to comment about the issue. On the other hand, SCEE has confirmed plans to contact Church authorities in an attempt to resolve the matter.

Though there are probable rumours of a legal action taking place, what the Church is most interested in at present is an apology.

I think this whole thing is stupid really, it's not like Resistance is a title that is trying to promote gun use or one targeting the credibility of organized religion. They're fighting in the church because England has been invaded by fricking aliens from outerspace and they need to make their way through the city and oh look, solders had used the church as a holdout pint just like real life armies were known to do during urban warfare.

Besides it's not like their as anything but the enemy invaders left when you got there and you needed to retrieve some document or some such.

To them, those aliens/soldiers might as well be priests and congregants getting gunned down by twelve year olds with submachine guns. That is how absolutely detached from reality they are, that they cannot understand the difference between a Sci-Fi video game and real life. It's sad really, they're talking about how kids won't be able to tell the difference between reality/fantasy and they themselves can't seem to handle that.

As much as I hate to defend Sony and Resistance.

How exactly would a lawsuit work, anyway, since Resistance was made by Americans, and the Church of England is threatening legal action? If the church one by British laws, would the game still be available in the US, since it's probably legal by our laws? This whole thing is a big mess, but I think Sony and Insomniac will pull through in the end. The prosecution really doesn't have a leg to stand on here, because it's all going to come down to what's considered decent and what's not, which in this case is highly subjective.

''In its letter, Sony said it did not accept "that there is any connection between contemporary issues in 21st century Manchester and the work of science fiction in which a fictitious 1950s Britain is under attack by aliens."

"We believe a comprehensive viewing of the work will make its content and context clear," Sony said, adding that "Resistance: Fall of Man" has sold more than 2 million units around the world. ''

In other news Resistance is at +2 million sold around the world.

What does the the amount of units ROFM has moved have to do with anything? They're supposed to be combating injustice from the religious hierarchy, not waving their penises in the air.

*picks up phone and dials number*
