the story for the 3rd film, which mentions a couple of years back had Riddick go into the Underverse to find Kyra and bring her back. Not sure if that will be the story now.

Apparently Vin Diesel said they expected to start production in March for a fall 2010 release. If they believe they can do that, than the effect may be even more toned down than Pitch Black. Oh well, still very interested in seeing this. He also said they were going to be shooting in Egypt and New Zealand.

I saw part of Pitch Black on AMC the other night. I had to break out the DVD of the movie and also bought Chronicles of Riddick on Blu-ray. After seeing those two movies back to back I say bring on a third.

I read on another website that they will begin shooting Riddick sequel when Vin is done shooting Fast Five(yup another Fast and the Furious movie).

Can't Fast Five wait? We only just had another F&F film last year.

Those were my thoughts as well.:o

It is good to hear though that Universal has finally given full backing to the movie which was always crucial. Now it's going to be interesting to see which of the first two films cast returns.

I loved the first two Riddick films although it was quite odd they were so different from one another. I'm glad to see more coming!

Bizarre they are making another one after the last one bombed. I don't see how they are going to get as much of a budget this time around.

I think working with a less of a budget will keep them in check a little. What made Pitch Black so amazing is the characters. It was such a tight movie and not a lot of flash. Riddick had way to much going on and lost the characters.

You're absolutely right about that. One of the sequel's problems was that they seemed to favor special effects over keeping the atmosphere of the first. I hope that they bring back the dark atmosphere of Pitch Black. Vin is better when he's mysterious. Riddick should be a guy that speaks with his knives unless he has something to say.

Isn't he king of the necromongers now at the end of part 2. You guys think they'll start from that?

i will not complain that the budget was bigger in the sequel. because i liked the story for what it was and the visual were amazing.

i dont understand why someone wouldnt want to make a more expensive movie when the studio wants to give you the money.

Well for one thing the original was more or less a cult low budget sci-fi flick.

Thing is, David Twohy is NO James Cameron.

i think the character works better in stories that are less grand. You throw him into a universe where there are Necromongers, Windpeople, and things and what made him special is gone.

True. When Chronicles of Riddick really started getting good was when Riddick ended up in prison. The final act, when he goes back to fight the Necros was decent too, but the second act was what really reminded me of why I loved Pitch Black,

The games are great because they kept the gritty atmosphere of the universe. There are parts of the Dark Athena that are somewhat similar to Chronicles. I mean specifically the drones and whatnot. Difference is it still felt like the same universe. Chronicles while a decent film doesn't feel that way until you get to the prison. And even then because it's PG-13 it feels like Diet Pitch Black. I think that is something they can fix in this one.

I enjoy watching Chronicles of Riddick. Obviously it's quite different to Pitch Black but I like both films. I tend to view it all like Vin says, comparable to LOTR in structure.. That Pitch Black is the prequel, the introduction to the character and universe. Chronicles is the start of the trilogy and main story that takes place in the universe. Ok, so they are 2 different feeling films but I think that's solely attributed to the rating issue rather than where they took the story.. I can totally see the Riddick of Pitch Black running about in Chronicles.

Undoubtedly, Riddick was perhaps let down a bit by the PG13 rating but I still enjoy it. I think the biggest problem it has is not so much that it's more effects/visual heavy than PB but it's more to do with the villains.. In light of what you expect from Chronicles based on PB, I don't think they quite stand up to that and again, that's perhaps to do with the rating..

Ideally, I'd like to see them continue the Riddick trilogy they planned with the same visual style but with a tone closer to PB.. perhaps a happy middle ground. It might require a step up in the rating though..

Whatever they do with it.. more Riddick is good news.

I hope they do but not sure if they would have the budget for it, we'll see I guess.

Pitch Black is first and Chronicles of Riddick is the second.

A bit off topic; I would like to see Vin make is beloved Hannibal movie, get it off his chest. And I would like it not to suck like Oliver Stone's Alexander. Heh.

I'm thinking that is why he is doing FF and Riddick, to remind people he is a draw. He has to show the studios that backing that movie isn't a risk cause he can fill seats.

Doc Ock already answered your question, but I also want to throw in the mention of the 35 minute animated video The Chronicles o Riddick: Dark Fury. It's a really nice movie that fits in well with the rest of the series. You can find all movies in a "trilogy" pack for about $10 American. Pitch Black itself is worth that much IMO, so it's a really good deal.
