Rise of the Planet of the Apes

The ape looks like the typical CGI fluff. Totally unconvincing. The guys in suits with rubber masks in "Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes" at least looked like something physically within the word. I was kinda hoping it would be like Conquest as it's a very under-rated film. It does basically look like Transformers with Apes instead of big robot things.

and the award for best troll goes too...

Rargh! Who would have guessed the superintelligent monkey graphics wouldn't look like real life? Hate cgi and advancements in technology! More guys in rubber suits like that lizard dude in Star Trek! Bring back Claymation, it was so much more authentic in it's jerkiness!

Yeah! And did you see that District 9 film? All the aliens in that movie looked so fake! They should've just had a bunch of a people wear cheap alien costumes! That would've looked so much more convincing than the crap that we actually got! Screw progress and innovation! :argh:

It's the Devil!

Or, animatronics (or whatever it's called)?

Also, I'm not against CGI, only badly done CGI that looks so fake to the point of being pointless. e.g.

In comparison to 28 days later, which I believe is a much cheaper movie, what looks more convincing and whats more effective?

Same with this movie, looks like a Playstation video game.

The effects look about as good as the last King Kong film did. Not really innovation or moving forward. But there is still some time before the movie comes out. My problem is with the movie as a whole, and not really the effects though.

Liked how the apes move. Still hate how Caesar has human eyes.

Caesar hates how you have human eyes! :cmad:

About the ape revolution (you're right, it is fun to write :hehe:) and how the apes take over the world, this is what happens in the Script I've read:

Caesar plan is only to free the apes from the Ape Sanctuary ("The Ranch"), the GenSys Laboratories and the San Francisco Zoo and lead them to the Muir Woods on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, where they can live free. He's also not the only proeminent ape characters - There's are two gorillas, Rocket and Buck; an orangutan, Maurice; Caesar's chimpanzee mate Cordelia and Koba, an evil, sadistic chimpanzee.

Koba is another test subject of GeneSys Laboratories, and he has a flu while being experimented on. Due to the effects of the drug created by James Franco's character, Will Rodman, the flu mutates into a powerful biological weapon that infects several people in San Francisco. When they start leaving the city after the ape revolution, they accidentally spread the virus all over the world, and Humanity slowly falls as Caesar and his army watch from the Muir Woods.

that actually sounds great. love the idea of a [BLACKOUT]biological agent born of the apes[/BLACKOUT]

Agreed on Conquest. Friends! But this cgi looks very impressive to me. especially that final shot of cesaer. looks real.

CGI seems to be constantly making a step BACKWARDS. Why not just use real chimps and apes for some scenes? Seriously. And Avatar... If we're going for photo-realism, wouldn't it have saved time (and money) to use real actors and paint them blue? This has all become "CGI for the hell of it."

Jurassic Park made me believe that dinosaurs came back for real. No Special Effects have come close to that work since. JP is, to this day, the greatest SFX of all-time. I have a hard time thinking of anything better.

Makeup is severely limiting in terms of facial performance, and is an incredibly time consuming effort.

Makeup would have never looked as good as the CG in Avatar. A man in a suit will always be a man in the suit. The CG characters in Avatar are living, breathing creatures in the world they inhabit.

Makeup will never look as good as the facial performances and movement in Rise of the Apes. I guarantee you that. The last few seconds of the Rise of the Apes trailer single handedly prove it.

CG will only get better too.

Photorealism is here and will become cheaper and easier to do in the years to come. Theres no need to walk backwards when the way forward is constantly opening up:

Weta are the studio that made people stand up and notice amazing special effects, both practical and digital in the 21st century.

ILM aren't.

Saying they could is one thing, but ILM haven't done a single project in the past decade that has raised the profile of FX and have had people talking like Weta have.

You both are going to extremes.

Both ILM and WETA are incredible plus Avatar was a massive team effort anyway with a lot of VFX studios involved (including ILM).

Either way both houses have made their mark and will continue to do so.

@Sawyer, may I please have your permission to use this as my new sig?! Freakin' hilarious! (I'll give credit of course :cwink:)

Either you're being sarcastic or just blind to the fact that ILM continues to be one of the leading VFX houses today.
Saying that they haven't done a single project in the past decade that raised the profile of FX is just plain ignorant.
How about imo-cap.
The photorealistic CGI in POTC2. Or photoreal shots in the transformers movies.

Don't forget that ILM was responsible for the several battle sequences in Avatar.

Both WETA and ILM continue to be the best VFX studios out there today. Both saing that one is better the other is just wrong on so many levels. Both have had their success and both have had their failures .

In Avatar's case, the bulk of the credit should go to WETA though.

They were the lead VFX company on the film and were responsible for rendering all of the Na'vi and the jungle landscapes.

Everyone else was brought on late in the game, to handle the overflow work WETA couldn't get to.

Regardless saying ILM is somehow inferior is still pretty insulting.

Both have shown their excellence in more than one occasion.

Hi,

Quick question for the Planet of the Apes heraldist : in the original movie with C Heston, humanity was annihilated ( almost ) because of a nuclear war correct ?

I liked the trailer a lot. Pretty excited.

Really? I wasn't too impressed. The apes look great but other than that I don't think this is going to be great. Maybe good enough, but nothing great. If anything, the apes will get the most acclaim.

That last shot is pretty effective though. Eerie as hell.
