Rub & Tug

T'Challa was "Black Captain America" before Christopher Priest got a hold of him.
So Black Panther, as we know him popularly, was crafted by Priest?

Wait, he didn't even get that right?

Much of what what "popped" on the big screen, including the Dora Milaje, was created by Mr. Priest. His work is considered by most to be the definitive BP run. Not crediting him is like talking X-Men without mentioning Claremont.

And that has baring on what exactly? Who directed the two films that saw massive acclaim and were both culture events?

You think the success of those films had anything to do with the color or the gender of the people that directed them? Would I be wrong to assume that the overwhelming majority of movie-goers that paid to see Wonder Woman had no idea who Patty Jenkins was prior to seeing it or that the movie even had a female director?

I'm just saying if a white man is good enough to CREATE these characters, then I don't see anything wrong with having a white man behind the camera either and neither should you. Who even cares? Whoever can make the best movie should make the movie. You are the one putting people into boxes and slapping arbitrary labels.

man, this has really turned into a thing all over the internet since yesterday.

From an outsider looking in there really does seem like there’s this weird obsession with labels coming out of the US. Maybe it’s just a cultural thing but I just don’t get it.

It's the curse of having so many different cultures and religions and races. Double edged sword for those that don't like that kinda thing.

I couldn't read all the comments on the topic but re: Ms Johansson asking trans activists and allies to redirect the criticism toward Leto and Tambor: Leto and Tambor have been criticized for years, and I still remember the "I'm a Danish girl why am I being portrayed by an English man" meme.

It isn't sexism that makes people silence over cismen portraying transwomen but criticize her. Those cismen were all criticized back in the time, it's just that nowadays trans activism is more prominent and people are more aware of the issue, so the voice is amplified.

There are plenty of rich, affluent women in Hollywood. Nothing is stopping them from venturing into business for themselves, producing their own movies and hiring whoever they please.

Sometimes there just aren't enough faces to palm.

Scarlett Johansson Exits Trans Film ‘Rub and Tug’

Scarlett Johansson has exited the drama film “Rub and Tug” a little more than a week after her casting sparked backlash amid trans groups and activists, a source with knowledge of the situation confirms to Variety.

“In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project,” Johansson told Out Magazine, which first reported the news, in a statement. “Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive. I have great admiration and love for the trans community and am grateful that the conversation regarding inclusivity in Hollywood continues. According to GLAAD, LGBTQ+ characters dropped 40% in 2017 from the previous year, with no representation of trans characters in any major studio release.”

“While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante’s story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film,” the statement continues. “I believe that all artists should be considered equally and fairly. My production company, These Pictures, actively pursues projects that both entertain and push boundaries. We look forward to working with every community to bring these most poignant and important stories to audiences worldwide.”

She's actually holding out to get a phone call for the Rachel Dolezal biopic.

Not surprised and probably pretty smart of her.

In other words, there was a lot of downside to her staying on and not a lot of upside. Interviews would have been about her casting and not the movie itself.

That and she has the Black Widow movie coming up and probably couldn't do both

I was leery more just because she looks absolutely nothing like Gill.

That didn't take long.

The SJWs win again.

I'm sure they're celebrating on Instagram and Tumblr.

I'm leery of further emboldening them too, but at the same time I don't think Johansson was right for this role.

Do the trans actors that had a problem with this count in the SJW group? Because the ones I read seemed pretty thoughtful in the criticism, even while being attacked online.

Legitimately, I want to know who was the first to tell her how bad the statement her team decided to release was. She could have totally done this project. It would have had backlash that probably stopped it from even being considered for awards, but her biggest issue was the statement. It came off rather selfish and completely insensitive. It was really easy to attack.

Her statement probably did more harm than the actual casting. She probably should have just not said anything.

Also it probably doesn't help that we had a similar controversy with her barely a year ago with Ghost in a Shell.

Anyone else feel like the title for this could easily work as an alternative title to Boogie Nights?

This thing was an obvious attempt at an Oscar, but was really starting to wonder if Sarah Huckabee Sanders was moonlighting doing PR for Scarjo.:cmad:
