I'm kind of hoping we get some sort of twisted, internal monologue between the two in addition to Hulk being more talkative when he's out and about.

Here's a few scans of a dialogue between Banner and the Hulk that I sort of have in mind.

Probably won't get it in AoU though, but maybe AoU can plant the seeds for internal discussion if Bruce is going to get mind screwed by either Wanda or the scepter.

In A1 we saw Banner very much in control of the Hulk at the end, but he still wasn't talkative, so I don't know where it goes from there, apparently AoU has the 'Hulk Hulking out' so that would mean he becomes even more mindless.

I think Hulk should have said more than puny god in A1 so we could see a difference between Banner in control and Banner not in control.

I've said it before, but if the audiences can accept a talking raccoon, then there's no reason that Hulk shouldn't talk now and that they should find it silly. He can't only have as many lines and only be as talkative as Groot. What makes a raccoon more believable to audiences?

I think in the books and new cartoon he only talks when he needs to, which is fine. Like not be constantly carrying on conversations but just a quick one liner or two in response to someone or something. Like Momoa's character from Stargate Atlantis.

I feel like the GA would be genuinely surprised/disturbed if hulk pulled off full sentences. Which would be great. But like most said, he doesn't have to speak in every scene but i think a few lines would be good. And whatever he says needs to be direct and important, he could have a line for comedic relief and a line that carries gravity to balance things out. But i think he should have a couple lines just to show the audience he is capable of holding a conversation and the fact that he doesn't speak much would hold more weight.

The general audience accepted Hulk speak from the Apes in the second Planet of the Apes movie also.

In the Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes animated show, Hulk was perfectly able to speak in complete sentences, and hold conversations with people. He still didn't talk a ton, and he chose his words carefully, but he was no mute brute either.

I sometimes feel that we'll have every other animal and inanimate object talking on the silver screen before Hulk, but when it comes to the green goliath somehow they'll think audiences won't buy it and it will seem unrealistic. It's all Kenneth Johnson's fault.

Well he has talked onscreen before. But his vocabulary seems to be limited to like five words total across all of his live-actin incarnations. Heck in Avengers, he said exactly TWO words "puny god."

Partially because Rocket just...talks. I don't think it's about the believability as much as it's about the silliness as you pointed out. Yes, the sight of a talking animal can be silly, but the stuff actually coming out his mouth isn't. I never was a big fan of the "Hulk this" or "Hulk that" first person child stuff, although I completely respect the reasoning behind it. I think if he just talks normally, outside of his catchphrases of course, it could work.

Said it before, I'll say it again, what the Hulk really needs is another manifestation. A more intelligent Gray Hulk, or even Professor incarnation, kills a few birds with one stone while not retreading the same territory.

Groot was basically a slightly more pacifist Hulk, sans him only being able to say his catchphrase.

I think his persona needs to come out where he's the gruff one of the team, like he sulks and just chills in silence and kinda seethes because he's antsy about not having anything to smash when he's not in Banner mode.

Defenders Hulk was similar in several ways to Avengers: EMH Hulk, except that in the Defenders he still spoke in the third person with "Hulk smash" and "Hulk rescue Bird Nose and Sword Girl" etc. However, he was much more of a team player than in some other incarnations. Hulk would stay the Hulk as long as possible and would even sit around the table eating beans with the rest of the gang. He even knew how to shop for groceries, although he bought a month's worth of beans, because "beans are good."

What of possible interest could a savage, or repressed child like rage have to say anyway that contributes to the story? The best it can do is add humor, as we saw in Avengers. He's not a dimensional character. He's a weapon of mass destruction that just needs to be aimed.

Joss Whedon pretty much put the kibosh on more Hulk talking in that new set interview that went online today. According to Whedon, he CAN speak, but he's a guy of few words and will only really say a few words at key dramatic moments.

Hmm, so I suppose this means Fiege isn't confident in the chances of a Hulk movie any time soon. If they can't slip him into Phase 3, hopefully they have a script and have cleared whatever snafu exists with Universal by the time Phase 4 starts.

WHOA WHOA WHOA. Hulk speaks about Bruce's childhood? Or am I looking too far into this?

My levels of intrigue have sky-rocketed. Can't wait to see what terrible but lovely events are in store for the green Goliath.

I hope to see more of the Hulk interacting with the team. Not JUST fighting.
One of my favorite parts of the first Avengers movie is when Cap tells Hulk to "smash". I love how Cap referred to him as Hulk and not Banner. I think Hulk enjoyed that too. He probably felt respected, and like he was part of the team.

Hulk and Banner were one but the Savage Hulk persona started to manifest when kid Banner tried to fight his abusive father.

From the Hot Toys figure, it looks like The Hulk will wear special makeshift Avengers pants in the film. Maybe the fibres in the fabric expand with him a she grows so they dont rip? I can just imagine a scene of Stark giving Banner the pants.
