I think it´s official to say, Microsoft, unless they make something realllllly drastic, they are in for a gigantic fall, and they will lose second place in 2010.
I was just looking at the numbers, and .....
Not only the PS3 outsold the 360 on Black Friday, the two most pre-ordered games in the US at this point are: God of War and MAG

All of this just to say that, they can very well release a new console 3 years after the next Xbox, the playstation will always win.
Unless the real reason is the blur-ray drive, which, in this case, Microsoft needs to release one.....fast.
I don't think it's just the blu-ray drive. No doubt about it, blu-ray is a big factor, but you still have to take into account that this is the PlayStation brand we're talking about which is still huge and with the PS3 now at an affordable price, you have former PS2 owners who were waiting to buy one, and they now have an effective advertising campaign all thanks to Mr. Kevin Butler.

Although personally, if the PS3 ends up in second place, I think it'll happen in late 2010, internationally. But that's sorta expected, I'm curious to see if it'll take second place in North America which is essentially the 360 stronghold.

I was just thinking of when MS claimed victory and how they said they guaranteed Sony would never catch up this gen 2 or so E3's ago (same one they said they were outselling the Wii at). Then had this mental image of right as the PS3 was within 100k units of the 360 and about to pass it MS suddenly saying, "Ok, this generations is over as of this second!", and announced the Xbox 720.

I´ve read it before that Microsoft has all planned out, and their mission next year will be to wow and amaze.
They will not want to go down without a fight.
On the other hand, the PS3 is selling great and fast.
Both have amazing games for 2010, both have motion controllers for 2010....and Microsoft will want to get into the "power" fight, meaning, to show the 360 can make games in the likes of Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2.
Rumors state that, not only will the 360 games coming out in 2010 will be optimized for HDD (in the likes of PC games); Natal will make the 360 better than it is now, better even than the PS3 and high end PC, for it will have a GPU, CPU, RAM and whatnot.

Like i said before, 2010 will be the most kick ass year this gen. It will be messy, bloody, an all-out war between Sony and Microsoft, and we all will be on the front seat :D

The only thing Microsoft could do to ever get me to buy a XBox is to have free online play.

For it to have been 315k for the 360 in the US, and 450k for the PS3, that's a substantial difference.

I disagree.

From Microsoft's POV, for Sony to only sell 135k more is a good sign. After all, they've been out for longer, so the market is likely more saturated for them (not to mention the whole recession thing). Add in the RROD stuff, extra costs, etc and you can see why Sony should really be outselling it by a larger factor.

This is why you can't micromanage numbers, you have to look at trends for longer periods. A lot of people have been waiting for the price drop, and we're seeing that. Sony is poised well with upcoming games to help carry them through. The thing is -- is it too little too late? They need to maintain the momentum all year long AND have Microsoft dropping to catch up.

Natal could go either way. More than likely, it'll be bundled with a rebranding of the 360 to make it standard, avoiding the EyeToy issue. Current 360 owners have no issue with buying expensive peripherals, so that's not an issue either. So it boils down to software support, something MS has been good about this generation. Launching with the same number of titles that both systems launched with, isn't too shabby, considering how new it is.

And with MS being developer friendly (XNA is great!) they shouldn't have trouble getting people on board to make games for it.

Yeah I agree. With the PS3 price drop and redesign I'm sure Microsoft was well prepared to be outsold.

I certainly hope they can. I would really love to see Sony give Microsoft a lot more of a fight than they have been. And the PS3 has some top tier games coming out early next year so I think we'll continue to see them inching into Microsoft's territory. Plus who knows what they could have up their sleeve for later in the year? Although I wouldn't be surprised one bit to see Microsoft unveil a redesigned 360 at CES or E3 to try and combat Sony's recent success.
